Deer leg in garden

SquishyBones · 28/06/2020 12:11

I get my dogs deer legs to chew on (complete with hooves and hair). As it’s been hot my dog has been off her food and I gave her a deer leg on Friday to chew on. She carried it around the garden then tried to bury it in DH veg pots so I told her off. She then carried it to the back of the garden and pushed it through a small hole in the fence landing in next doors garden. They were sitting out in the garden at the time and the woman screamed and ran inside and her husband just said “what the fuck is that?!” I went over to the fence and apologised and explained it was the dog. He asked me where I got it from and if I make a habit of killing and chopping up animals!! I explained they are bought from the pet shop. He apologised but added “it’s disgusting though, the wife is in a right state”. I asked him if we could have it back and he refused to touch it so I had to go around to their house and get it myself (they don’t live next door, they live down the street but their garden backs onto ours.

I retrieved it and told DH that dog was to have no more until she got her appetite back.

Well she’s only gone and done the same thing with a big fucking black fury cows ear that DH gave her. They’re going to go ballistic when they see it.

AIBU to insist that DH goes for it this time?

Traumatised?! Give over 🤣 By a bit of a dead animal? Assuming all these traumatised squeamish people are strict vegans?

My dog has a habit of throwing his duck necks in the air and catching them, repeatedly. Thankfully he hasn't got any over either neighbours fence yet.

AlexaShutUp · 28/06/2020 13:10

I wonder how many of the posters who think seeing bits of dead deer is disgusting and traumatising have bits of dead cows pigs and chickens in their fridges

Not me. I haven't eaten meat in more than 30 years, and we never have it in the house. I'd rather not have it in my garden either.

peachesandclean · 28/06/2020 13:10

with respect you've got to understand that to you this may just be a dog chew, some people find it distressing to see. It may have been an over reaction from the neighbours but if they are easily affected by something like that then you can understand why they were shocked and displeased at finding that in their garden

purplecorkheart · 28/06/2020 13:10

Why was the fence not fixed the first time it happened? They know it caused their neighbour distress. Why post on mumsnet instead of actively trying to solve the problem.

vanillandhoney · 28/06/2020 13:11

@AlexaShutUp

Yes, the hole in the fence should be fixed but let's not pretend OP is an awful neighbour because of this.

Sorry, but I'd think she was a pretty awful neighbour if she lived nextdoor to me. I accept that the dog's behaviour is just what a dog does, but if you know that, then surely you should keep your fence in a good state of repair. Or at the very least block it up immediately when you realise that your dog has upset the neighbours by pushing something through it.

It may not be OP's fence.
Laaalaaaa · 28/06/2020 13:11

Vegan or not - I would not touch that if your dog put it into my garden.

DollyDaydream70 · 28/06/2020 13:12

I'm vegetarian but I have to say that I think lots of people are over reacting. I have two cats who are fed meat and fish. Granted I buy their meals from the supermarket therefore it doesn't come in the shape of the animal that the meat has come from, but it is animal all the same... people are put off by the fact that the deer leg is still in the shape of a deer leg, but if the leg had been minced into a tin of Whiskas most wouldn't have a problem!

WorraLiberty · 28/06/2020 13:14

I voted YABU but only because the dogs should've been brought in and the hole in the fence blocked up, as soon as it was discovered.

Viviennemary · 28/06/2020 13:16

Yes I do eat a little meat. But don't throw the bones next door.

speakout · 28/06/2020 13:16

I am with your neighbour OP.

No one want stuff like that pulled into their garden.,

It's your choice what you feed your dog but if you know there is a chance the stuff may end up elsewhere then do it indoors.
I have owned several dogs and they would buy pigs ears or big raw knuckle bones from the butcher. But I would only have them eat this stuff indoors.
Messy food like that picks up mud and contaminants if fed in the garden, not good for a dog's heath, and also a route for parasite transmission from wild animals- intestinal worm eggs etc are often found in grass and soil having been deposited by hedgehogs, foxes etc.

Safer for the dogs and better for neighbours to feed messy food like thiis indoors.

purplecorkheart · 28/06/2020 13:18

It may not be OP's fence.

You can still find away to block the hole on your side. The ops husband has gone to get stuff to block it up now. Why did he not do it the first time. Whether the neighbours are overreacting or not is not really relevant.

tillyandmilly · 28/06/2020 13:18

I am sorry but that is horrific and disgusting! - I could not touch that! - poor deer !

speakout · 28/06/2020 13:19

I wonder how many of the posters who think seeing bits of dead deer is disgusting and traumatising have bits of dead cows pigs and chickens in their fridges

But that is someon'es choice.

I eat meat but I don't throw leftover sausages or any other type of food into my neighbours garden.

ButDoUAvocado · 28/06/2020 13:21

@speakout Wow! Your dogs must have been really well trained. Mine aren’t yet doing their own food shopping but you’ve given me hope I could crack it! Grin

AlexaShutUp · 28/06/2020 13:22

If it wasn't the OP's fence, then they should have found another way of blocking the hole or supervising the dog. It's clear that the neighbours were upset the first time, so letting it happen again is really inconsiderate.

AppleJane · 28/06/2020 13:22

This could give a kid nightmares if they'd had little children.

Not fixing the hole the first time is unforgivable. We've got neighbours like that 'oh it won't happen again' then it happens again and again and again. It's all those little things that add up and drive you bonkers. It means they don't give a shit about anyone else.

Don't be that neighbour OP.

StoppinBy · 28/06/2020 13:22

Good on you OP, all those parts go to waste if they aren't used like these.

So many people who are happy to see an animal killed so they can eat the 'pretty' parts but then don't want to think about what happens to the rest of the animal.

This week we butchered two roosters, I gave the neck and skin scraps to our dogs, the legs went to my Mum, as our dogs run with our chickens I don't feed them the legs as I don't fancy them getting the taste for them an going round helping themselves to our living chickens legs lol

It is not great to kill an animal and then waste parts that can be used.

L4uz · 28/06/2020 13:23

@donquixotedelamancha

Have you popped a note into their letterbox letting them know what happened?

Attach another cow's ear so they know what to look for.

I laughed more than I should have at this Grin
StoppinBy · 28/06/2020 13:24

Sorry, I meant to say that the hole should have been filled or blocked the first time this happened so YABU to your neighbours for that reason.

avocadoze · 28/06/2020 13:25

Only on mumsnet.

OP you are being massively precious about your dog. I’d be fairly taken aback by an entire limb from a large animal being poked through my fence. Hilarious though

WorraLiberty · 28/06/2020 13:26

@Viviennemary

Yes I do eat a little meat. But don't throw the bones next door.
That's something you and the OP have in common then.
MyPersona · 28/06/2020 13:27

Gosh some OPs do seem to have a lot of controversial stuff going on in their lives for other people to get heated and frothy about.

sonjadog · 28/06/2020 13:29

My dog once came home with a deer's leg like that. She was most put out that I wouldn't let her bring it into the house.

Can you not get the dog to fetch back the cow´s ear? Or hoke it out of the garden in some way? I would try to remove it without them noticing, block the hole immediately, and then pretend like it never happened.

rogdmum · 28/06/2020 13:29

Sorry, but I just read that out to my family and we’re all having a good laugh. In normal times, l go on regular dog walks and once the dogs came across a deer leg/part body in the woods. See trying to get seven dogs off a dead deer part... Grin Grin Grin

rogdmum · 28/06/2020 13:29
  • group dog walks. I don’t own seven dogs!!!
