Deer leg in garden

SquishyBones · 28/06/2020 12:11

I get my dogs deer legs to chew on (complete with hooves and hair). As it’s been hot my dog has been off her food and I gave her a deer leg on Friday to chew on. She carried it around the garden then tried to bury it in DH veg pots so I told her off. She then carried it to the back of the garden and pushed it through a small hole in the fence landing in next doors garden. They were sitting out in the garden at the time and the woman screamed and ran inside and her husband just said “what the fuck is that?!” I went over to the fence and apologised and explained it was the dog. He asked me where I got it from and if I make a habit of killing and chopping up animals!! I explained they are bought from the pet shop. He apologised but added “it’s disgusting though, the wife is in a right state”. I asked him if we could have it back and he refused to touch it so I had to go around to their house and get it myself (they don’t live next door, they live down the street but their garden backs onto ours.

I retrieved it and told DH that dog was to have no more until she got her appetite back.

Well she’s only gone and done the same thing with a big fucking black fury cows ear that DH gave her. They’re going to go ballistic when they see it.

AIBU to insist that DH goes for it this time?

This made me chuckle!
Can you not just reach though the hole and retrieve it? It can't have gone that far into their garden, a front page length at most, surely! If your husband is coming back with material to block the hole it won't matter if you have to make it a bit bigger first.

VetOnCall · 28/06/2020 12:53

You definitely need to fix the hole in the fence but natural chews are far better for dogs than processed Dentastix type crap, those things are total garbage. I raw feed and my dogs get rabbit/hare ears, deer legs, duck/turkey necks, dried ostrich tendons, rabbit carcasses etc. as food/chews. They don't try to give them to the neighbours though 😄

donquixotedelamancha · 28/06/2020 12:53

We have rabbit ears in the freezer so just hoping she hasn’t been poking these through too.

I love the idea of bunny ears, I'm going to order some of those straight away (almost makes me wish I had a dog).

I don't understand all this shrieking about it. Even if you are a veggie and hate raw meat it's silly to be annoyed that it's fed to dogs.

Cherrysoup · 28/06/2020 12:54

Jesus Christ op can’t you give the pooch a dentastik like the rest of us shock

Because they’re disgusting and full of shit.

Where are you getting raw cow ears, OP?

Some of you would die if you lived next door to me, mine get whole bunnies, jacket on, pig trotters, plucked pigeons. One of them was a demon for bringing me pigeons in the park.

Sjan82 · 28/06/2020 12:55

Op, I am in a state just looking at that pic! Please block that hole ASAP! It’s your choice, but I suggest you try some “normal” stuff for your dog to chew on. Imagine you have someone over for tea and they see this! It’s a great deterrent though. Have it hanging on your front door when you go on a holiday 🤣🤣

comingintomyown · 28/06/2020 12:57

Me, I’m squeamish reading about these snack body parts !!

LesLavandes · 28/06/2020 12:58

Ah yuk. That would freak me out.

hiredandsqueak · 28/06/2020 12:58

I'm squeamish and would have cried that said I don't mind the dog having a bone from the butchers so long as it's not identifiable as part of an animal. I'd definitely send your dh for the ear.

AlexaShutUp · 28/06/2020 12:59

Wow, it's really antisocial to let your dog carry that kind of thing into other people's gardens. Feed your dog whatever you think is best, but ffs keep it under control.

I'd be really upset if something like that turned up in my garden, especially if it happened more than once. You might not be squeamish about bits of dead animal but have some consideration for others, please.

Cramitmaam · 28/06/2020 13:00

Dogs eat dead bits of animal. Such is life. I'm surprised that other dog owners are so shocked. If you own a dog you need to be comfortable with the fact that they eat meat.

Still, it would be pretty shocking to be sitting in the garden having a quiet cup of tea, and then all of a sudden see a big deer leg poking through the fence lol.

Bluetrews25 · 28/06/2020 13:01

Our (sadly late) dog once brought back a maggotty deer's head from the farm next door. Had a great gnaw on it, then brought it back again, IYSWIM.

SquishyBones · 28/06/2020 13:01

There is a great pet supplies shop near us that sells all this stuff so we’re very lucky. It’s cheap too! The deer legs are only about £3 each, rabbit ears are 4 for £1. Cows and pigs hairy ears are around £1.50.

They also had something like a big chew stick wrapped in raw fish but I saw it was rawhide so didn’t bother. I buy dried fish for training though ... big bucket of Sprats from pets at home, about £15 I think

This has given me such a laugh. They probably thought you were murderers burying your victims hahah

Oh come on, it's not like OP was standing there throwing animal parts over the fence. Dogs dig and bury their treats - it's totally normal for them to bury something high-value and come back to it later.

Yes, the hole in the fence should be fixed but let's not pretend OP is an awful neighbour because of this.

Wolfiefan · 28/06/2020 13:02

Great chew for dogs. But your neighbours shouldn’t have to have it shoved into their garden. Sort the whole in the fence. (And let me know where you bought the legs from. My girls would LOVE that! Grin)

purplecorkheart · 28/06/2020 13:03

Have you popped a note into their letterbox letting them know what happened? Then they know and can choice not go into the garden.

Feckmesideways · 28/06/2020 13:05

OP. If that came through to our garden fence, my tortoise would shit herself, she’s usually out when it’s warm with me enjoying some weeds and sunbathing, but loves a casual stroll along the fence.

donquixotedelamancha · 28/06/2020 13:05

Attach another cow's ear so they know what to look for.

Viviennemary · 28/06/2020 13:05

That's totally disgusting. I'd want to move away if I was your neighbour. They must be traumatised.

meow1989 · 28/06/2020 13:06

I grew up with dogs and cats but I'd not be ok with finding this in the garden, especially since having ds who I would a. Have to explain what it is to(hypocritical maybe as we a re a meat eating family but ds is 2 and doesnt know about death yet) and b. Stop from having a good chew. It's also just not very pleasant

AlexaShutUp · 28/06/2020 13:06

Sorry, but I'd think she was a pretty awful neighbour if she lived nextdoor to me. I accept that the dog's behaviour is just what a dog does, but if you know that, then surely you should keep your fence in a good state of repair. Or at the very least block it up immediately when you realise that your dog has upset the neighbours by pushing something through it.

Mintjulia · 28/06/2020 13:06

The dog isn't to blame. He's just following instinct and hiding his "prize" for later.

Can't you just get him a bone from the butcher. I know logically it's the same but it's less likely to reduce your neighbour to a fit of the vapours. Grin

Wolfiefan · 28/06/2020 13:07

OP I would happily have you as a neighbour. But my dogs would eat all the stuff yours passed through the fence. Grin

Poppinjay · 28/06/2020 13:08

I wonder how many of the posters who think seeing bits of dead deer is disgusting and traumatising have bits of dead cows pigs and chickens in their fridges Confused
