to think this person has had masses of white privilege

If a white male has grown up in a small house in a poor family (their words not mine) but went on buy their own home, get a good job with a large multinational and be sponsored through university and immigrate to the USA and get their green card then they can't claim not to have had any white privilege?
Yet they are saying that they have had no white privilege.

OP posts:
Wizadorawobble · 27/06/2020 23:03

I’ve had a police officer tell me off for calling an incident a racist once because I was white. You can’t be racist towards white people apparently.

Yup. We've even had to fight for racially aggravated murders to be counted as such! A gang can be kicking a Traveller 15 year old to death, stamping on his head whilst shouting "pikey, gypsy scum" and it's still not counted as a race hate crime!!!

PlanDeRaccordement · 27/06/2020 23:04

@IcedPurple

Then I suggest you re-read the thread and find my answer, I am not repeating myself

I have reread the thread and you did not respond to my post where I asked you to furnish stats supporting your assumption that BAME people were less likely be granted US visas when all other factors had been controlled her.

You did not respond to that question.

You did, however, say in a comment posted prior to mine that you did not find any such stats. And yet, you have again made the assumption that immigration is automatically easier for white people compared to BAME people in equivalent circumstances. Why are you doing this when, by your own admission, you have zero evidence to back this up? Are you just projecting your own assumptions and hoping none of us will call you out on it, even though several of us already have?

OP doesn’t have the statistics about green card issued to ethnic minorities because all the evidence supports that most green cards do not go to white people. See here: www.statista.com/statistics/200037/main-countries-of-last-residence-for-us-green-card-recipients/

Not a single white majority country in the top 25.... how about that OP?

She's gone rather quiet, hasn't she?

PlanDeRaccordement · 27/06/2020 23:33

Yes, she has....

OhTheRoses · 27/06/2020 23:57

I'm now fascinated wizadorawobble at the food hygiene and restrictions there are. Have spent twenty minutes googling to no avail. How similar to orthodox Jewish habits are they? No mixing of meat and milk? Two fridges/two sinks? No pork or shellfish?

Wizadorawobble · 28/06/2020 00:13

Yes, we don't mix certain things like meat and milk. We use different knives for things and won't wash up vegetable and meat knives in the same bowl. We use different bowls for everything really - hands and face, tea towels we won't mix with clothes or body towels etc. Toilet habits- to us it's very dirty to shit where you eat/ sleep/ live, that's why you might find a lot of us mobile GRT prefer to use public toilets.

OhTheRoses · 28/06/2020 00:27

In relation to defecation presumably that's because plumbed caravans weren't too common in the past. Non travellers until recent(ish) times had a lavatory outside so I guess they didn't defecate in their homes either.

Interesting.

Wizadorawobble · 28/06/2020 00:36

Nearly every single trailer/ caravan nowadays has a toilet, we still don't use it. We usually have a smaller trailer we use specifically for toilet purposes.
We also don't have sex whilst on our period or soon after childbirth.

Khadernawazkhan · 28/06/2020 00:42

As an Asian woman, I had Asian privilege growing up in India. Where the hell is this all leading us? Identity politics is going to destroy us. Stop!!

Sugarplumfairy65 · 28/06/2020 00:44

Does the USA routinely welcome black immigrants ?

Yes, if they meet the criteria

HopeClearwater · 28/06/2020 00:58

@Wizadorawobble No, I do not think any of the schools I’ve worked in with Traveller children have been aware of the considerations around food. It’s not been mentioned to us by parents either - if we were aware we would certainly offer adjustments at my current school to respect this.

OhTheRoses · 28/06/2020 01:11

wizadorawobble many other women don't have sex during their periods or for about 6 weeks after birth either.

Wizadorawobble · 28/06/2020 01:14

Not sure what point you're trying to make there @OhTheRoses

Wizadorawobble · 28/06/2020 01:18

Perhaps it's something you might like to look into @HopeClearwater? You have to take account of how we've been treated historically- lots who value education don't want to rock the boat with bringing up what might seem like silly issues to outsiders.

Wizadorawobble · 28/06/2020 01:41

There is at least one Roma and one other GRT on this thread. I don't want to speak for us all so please contribute if you feel able.

eaglejulesk · 28/06/2020 01:52

Can't we just stop? Why is there a need to add a persons skin colour into everything? I hope one day I'll be referred to as a woman rather than constantly "a black woman". Can't we learn something from the past, educate ourselves instead of slagging each other off because of skin colour?

This - well said @WaterOffADucksCrack

Adoodoobydoo · 28/06/2020 01:59

Sick of this divisive bs.

IamPickleRick · 28/06/2020 02:04

I think a lot of the time people confuse white privilege with socioeconomic privilege.

There are all sorts of privilege, male privilege, hetero privilege and so on.

You can have a terrible upbringing (which I did) and still have white privilege. The thing with white privilege is that it is easy to see who has it and who doesn’t. Socioeconomic privilege is not so easy to see and people who have not had those opportunities can become upset when invalidated by people who only see the end result and not the struggle that got them there. Equally people who did have them will become defensive and suggest it was their parents hard work that gave them their advantage.

Either way the point is the same. It is not the fault of the person with the privilege. It is the luck of birth. But we all balance our scales differently and some will have privilege in other ways. Let’s just honesty look at and celebrate where we and others have been lucky, and understand and empathise where we and others haven’t.

Oliversmumsarmy · 28/06/2020 02:09

Does the USA routinely welcome black immigrants

As opposed to White British then the answer is yes.

I cannot even apply for a Green Card without jumping through a lot of hoops and spending 7 figures.

My Black British born friend can get one with out any issue.

Alittleshortforaspacepooper · 28/06/2020 02:13

It's important that we keep arguing about this. The people must be divided in every way possible.

Divide and conquer.

If all whites have white privilege then why do white working class boys achieve less academically than BAME?

MakingMNGreatAgain · 28/06/2020 08:33

@Toseland

If, as a white person I go to live in, say Jamaica, do I then loose my white privilege and live amongst those with black privilege?
I can’t talk for Jamaica because I haven’t lived there but I’ve lived in an Asian country and my white privilege was very much lost! Got pretty used to being screamed at in the street (usually from older people), being denied housing, some job opportunities (there is a specific company that you often need to go through for foreigner opportunities, not always though), seeing white and black kids alike being racially abused (I worked in schools). On the other hand, you would have people fascinated with you, touching you, putting their hands through your hair, getting you to shake hands with locals, all without being asked if it was okay.

I don’t live there any more, it’s been a while, so it may have changed but I doubt by much.

I think when we talk about white privilege, it is from a British/Irish/US/Aus/NZ/etc perspective.

SoupDragon · 28/06/2020 08:37

@caringcarer

If all whites have white privilege then why do white working class boys achieve less academically than BAME?
Because there are also other factors at play.

Those underachieving white working class boys will, on the whole, then go on to get work Etc easier than their Black equivalents. They will never suffer because of the colour of their skin.

Soontobe60 · 28/06/2020 08:38

@totalpeas22

You do know that most people really don’t care about this nonsense?
I'm guessing you're white?
