Hut tub dilemma

As did half the country we decided to get a hot tub during lockdown , its causing no end of problems with the neighours though

We have lived in the same new build home for a while , friends with the neighbours no problems whatsoever and generally get on well. Dont socialise together but always pleasant exchanges so no problems , we turn a blind eye to some antisocial behaviour on their part. mainly smoking weed in their garden that blows into ours because on the whole they are good people , no loud parties or noise from theirs ect

They seem however to have taken exception to our hot tub as they dont like what they call a loud humming sound that they can hear , we are at a loss what to do about this as we canny move the hottub anywhere else in the garden , we have a large decking for garden furniture /bbq and a home made bar that take up the other spaces in the garden , my husband has spent a considerable time putting electric cables in the garden so repositioning this would be out of the question, we are mindful not to put the jets on after 11pm (checked with local council and this is the time that noise wouldnt be acceptable after) we also spent a fair whack on a set up so we would not consider not using this
Any suggestions other than moving house ?
AiBU for wanting to enjoy my garden ?
Neighbour came.round fairly angry knocking on door

@galesthismorning I wasn't referring to you at all & understood the context you were using it in 😊

RuddyP · 27/06/2020 08:50

If you have no neighbor the other side then it was a hugely inconsiderate thing to do to position it next to their fence. I'd move it.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 08:51

@GalesThisMorning
Thanks for your response your cottage sounds lovely , I grew up in a little cottage was magical in the winter months
We have never seen it as what these posters are calling CHAVY either
We are hard working people and like to enjoy things that make our lives enjoyable at home, we have DD who is 1 and therefore we dont go out much we stay home as a family

Urrgh hot tubs! I hate them - they make me feel like I am in a large casserole!

Anyway there was an article in the paper a couple of weeks ago and the expert suggested getting some rubber mats to put under the tub to provide some sort of noise insulation type thing. Might be worth a go?

nogreenfinger · 27/06/2020 08:53

The problem is the selfishness of people putting instruments in their garden that were really only intended for selective households with large gardens, ie. the well offs.

This is just nonsense.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 08:54

@dontdisturbmenow
It's not under their window it's at the bottom of the garden positioned well away from the house

The poster she referred to said her car was chavvy, not OP.

What defines a car as "chavvy"?

LakieLady · 27/06/2020 08:55

If I was House hunting and saw a neighbour had a hot tub I wouldn’t buy the house. It’s top of my list for things which would put me off a place

Ditto!

I also chuckle when I see properties advertised on Right Move that mention a hot tub like it's an asset. I'd want a couple of grand knocked off the price if I wanted a house that happened to have a hot tub, because I'd have the hassle and expense of getting it removed.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 08:56

@corapiribright
Yeah we have the mats underneath
Hubby is gonna make an enclosure for the filter today to see if he limits some of the noise

girlsyearapart · 27/06/2020 08:56

We have one and the bubbles are really loud - you can’t have a spoken conversation with them on. We rarely use the bubbles due to the noise.
Unless you’re planning on getting in first thing in the morning there’s no need to have it on overnight op it’s a waste of money.
Ours only takes a long time to heat up if it’s been off for a few days and if youve been using it most days it won’t take long to heat if the cover is on tightly

GalesThisMorning · 27/06/2020 08:57

@nogreenfinger phew! Grin

heartsonacake · 27/06/2020 08:57

@nogreenfinger

The poster she referred to said her car was chavvy, not OP.

You need to aim that question at the actual poster who said it.
SinglePringle · 27/06/2020 08:58

Hot tubs in large gardens where they don’t disturb anyone - acceptable.

Hot tubs in small suburban gardens where they disturb anyone - unacceptable.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 08:58

@LakieLady
The top of your list for not buying a property is a hot tub , so you can honestly say any of the following wouldnr be worse , barking dogs , loud children , living next to a couple who argue co instantly, DV issues , trampolines , weed smokers and drinkers in their gardens until 2/3am in the morning?

thedancingbear · 27/06/2020 09:00

Having your hot tub on 'til 11pm when you're closely packed in with neighbours on an estate is massively dickish and selfish.

nogreenfinger · 27/06/2020 09:01

I wasn't aiming it at anyone in particular just asking the question but looking at your responses @heartsonacake I thought you had some understanding of what was "chavvy" or not.

AntiSocialDistancer · 27/06/2020 09:02

Back to your point. Youre being bad neighbours. And they're not jealous of your house - its a new estate and they live next door. It can't be that different!

Dont have the hot tub on 7 days a week just because it doesnt bother you. It bothers them. Can you put it on Friday to Sunday and tell them after the summer holidays that will be your plan? And you should aim to give them a couple of days of peace as soon as you can from the noise.

And there is no way I could have the jets on past 10pm routinely weekend or not.

SoupDragon · 27/06/2020 09:03

Yes I was called a CHAV by @Starksforthewin*
Read a bit further back , it's got alot of negative connotation and is hate speech in my opinion*

The first mention of "chav" was at 1:47 by Vanlady and you laughed at that. You weren't at all concerned about "hate speech" then.

OneForMeToo · 27/06/2020 09:03

Don’t tell them you have a big tv op or they might just piss their pants 😁. The class thing is very funny in the fact that a lot of the poster claiming to be so ewww hot tubs would be also looked down upon by a lot of others for their choices being working class or even middle class so let’s not be pretending to be above our own stations putting someone down to feel slightly better about ones own class.

Inflatable hot tubs do Hum but if they can’t hear it in their house I’d tell them to suck it up like you do their stink.

NOTANUM · 27/06/2020 09:04

How long is your garden? If it was over 70ft long, I think your neighbours are being ridiculous. However if it's less, it might well be audible from their house.
My neighbours sleep all year around with windows open. In summer they sleep their their patio door open. It means we need to be careful about noise at times, e.g. bringing the dog out for a wee etc

Silvercatowner · 27/06/2020 09:05

Ours only takes a long time to heat up if it’s been off for a few days and if youve been using it most days it won’t take long to heat if the cover is on tightly

So does the water sit around kind of lukewarm for days and days (sorry I don't know how hot tubs work)? And the only thing stopping it becoming germ soup is the chlorine? Envy (That's 'vomit' not 'envy'.

Silvercatowner · 27/06/2020 09:05

I guess dead germs and bugs are mildly preferable to live ones....

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 09:07

@AntiSocialDistancer
Iv already stated in previous post (which you can be forgiven for not reading there are many ) that we use this max 3/4 times a week
We cant be in there every night we have a young child and we dont let her in obviously she is too young

OP posts:
Alchemila · 27/06/2020 09:07

I would turn the bubbles off after 9.30 to account for people wanting an early night, but other than that if you can’t hear the hum I think they’re just being unreasonable. Everyone has to deal with a certain level of neighbour noise unless they live in the middle of nowhere, and it doesn’t sound like your level of noise is unreasonable.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 09:10

@OneForMeToo
We are very tolerant neighbours and basically let them do as they wish , we dont have a massive garden and the gardens are close so we never comment on their DD loud voice as its just children enjoying themselves , the weed issue isnt nice either but again they want to smoke it so we just tolerate it
