Hut tub dilemma

Cuntycovid · 26/06/2020 23:57

As did half the country we decided to get a hot tub during lockdown , its causing no end of problems with the neighours though

We have lived in the same new build home for a while , friends with the neighbours no problems whatsoever and generally get on well. Dont socialise together but always pleasant exchanges so no problems , we turn a blind eye to some antisocial behaviour on their part. mainly smoking weed in their garden that blows into ours because on the whole they are good people , no loud parties or noise from theirs ect

They seem however to have taken exception to our hot tub as they dont like what they call a loud humming sound that they can hear , we are at a loss what to do about this as we canny move the hottub anywhere else in the garden , we have a large decking for garden furniture /bbq and a home made bar that take up the other spaces in the garden , my husband has spent a considerable time putting electric cables in the garden so repositioning this would be out of the question, we are mindful not to put the jets on after 11pm (checked with local council and this is the time that noise wouldnt be acceptable after) we also spent a fair whack on a set up so we would not consider not using this
Any suggestions other than moving house ?
AiBU for wanting to enjoy my garden ?
Neighbour came.round fairly angry knocking on door

Have you tried saying to your neighbours that you’ll turn off the hot tub if they stop smoking the weed in their garden?

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 09:12

@Alchemila
We try to limit our noise as much as we can , we play music very low through a phone outside rather than sound system so there is no bass vibration, this is never after 9pm at night
We dont have pets that are making noise just DD who is finding her voice and if she becomes too vocal as she can I sit inside with her

@KingOfDogShite
Husband said if they mention the tub again he is going to tell them this, we gonna see what happens now

@nogreenfinger

I wasn't aiming it at anyone in particular just asking the question but looking at your responses *@heartsonacake* I thought you had some understanding of what was "chavvy" or not.
Oh really? Why would you think that?

I never mentioned anything of the sort, nor anything even remotely similar.

notalwaysalondoner · 27/06/2020 09:14

I’ve heard this can be caused by decking or fencing transmitting the noise. Is it touching a fence or decking? If so, moving it by even a few inches could make all the difference, or else moving it off the decking and onto solid ground. Could even cut a hole in the decking for it if you can’t move it. If your neighbours have previously been fine I don’t think they’d suddenly make a fuss about this with no reason, so you should try and find a solution.

chrislilleyswig · 27/06/2020 09:14
@LakieLady that's the thing we cant hear it but apparently they can ?
DH thinks its jealousy as our house is much nicer than theirs but obviously I dont want to cause upset
Ah jealousy. That old chestnut Grin

barking dogs , loud children , living next to a couple who argue co instantly, DV issues , trampolines , weed smokers, and drinkers in their gardens until 2/3am in the morning?

Ok, we have all of these on close proximity where we live apart from the partying in gardens late at night. Yes it’s far from ideal but I can honestly say I wouldn’t trade them in for the constant hum from a hot tub. The difference is that all the above only happen fairly infrequently. I hate, hate, HATE my neighbour smoking and all the smoke blowing straight through the house, the kids rooms, etc. But it only happens a few x per day (would be different if they were chain smoking all day). Dogs barking, if it were constantly it would be awful. But it’s for short periods with breaks in between. Hot tub, if it were humming once per day for a short time, fine, but constantly, absolutely antisocial. It would drive me insane. I think YABU.

LakieLady · 27/06/2020 09:15

Barking dogs don't bother me much, OP, perhaps because I'm a dog owner myself (although our dog is very quite now she's gone deaf). DV I'd report in a heartbeat, and repeated noise late into the night is something I'd report to the council.

But our next (and last) move will be rural, detached and ideally with no near neighbours. And no hot tub, so we don't have the hassle of getting rid of it!

AntiSocialDistancer · 27/06/2020 09:16

I thought you left it on all week? I was advising you keep it the whole thing turned off for a few days.

Indoctro · 27/06/2020 09:18

We have run a inflatable hot tub now for nearly two years. At 9/10pm or when we are finished with it , we turn it of completely at the mains

When we wake up around 8ish we turn it on. It only drops from 38 to 30 overnight. It's ready to use again by midday

Running it Luke this is way more economical bringing cost from £100 per month to £50

You do not need the pump on overnight it's a waste of electricity so turn it off so they don't hear it and save yourself money.

OneForMeToo · 27/06/2020 09:18

If you turn the filter off your going to need to empty it every time.

Leaving the water sat lukewarm untreated and not circulating is a recipe for catching something such as legionnaires.

The loud part is bubbles the hum is just the filter.

Roussette · 27/06/2020 09:19

I think we all have to admit it... if you saw your neighbours have a lorry pull up and men unloading a hot tub, 99% of people's heart would sink. I know mine would.

It's not the hum (I could put up with that), it's the possibility of horrible colour lights, music, drinks, people round, gurgling bubbles etc. Not knowing how much your neighbour will use it and whether it's going to be a total nightmare.

I just don't get them at all and wish someone could explain the attraction.
The weather in UK is often shit so do you use it in all weathers? It rains so much here, surely the windows of opportunity aren't that great
So... you go outside in your swimsuit and just sit in water? If the bubbles are too loud to put on too much, just what is the point?
I am genuinely curious.
Then when you get out you're dripping wet and you have to somehow get through your house without making a wet mess.
Don't get them at all !

OP I'm sure you can come to an understanding with your neighbour and try and put yourself in their shoes. The one bit I don't understand is how you can't hear the hum but they can??

LovingLen · 27/06/2020 09:21

Aren't the inflatable ones like a big plugged in paddling pool, DB has a built in one and I don't think they are so noisy

Roselilly36 · 27/06/2020 09:21

You must be new to MN otherwise you would know that owning a hot tub, particularly an inflatable one, means you are the neighbour from hell, referred to as a sex pond and owners are more than likely swingers, they are the ultimate in chav, you will be getting infections right left & centre, they are germ ridden, anti social etc.

Of course they haven’t got one.

Sensible people that own a hot tub, regularly check & treat they water, don’t site a hot tub so the pump will vibrate against neighbours fence, use the hot tub late at night.

And have the nerve to actually enjoy their hot tub, how very dare they, what next.

We have an inflatable hot tub best money we ever spent, really helps my pain too.

nogreenfinger · 27/06/2020 09:22

"I’ve RTFT. Where were you called a chav? The exact post?"

"No you weren’t. I’ve read her posts and she never called you a chav."

"The poster she referred to said her car was chavvy, not OP. If you buy a car and I say it’s ugly, am I calling you ugly? No, I’m not."

"You know we’re talking about a specific poster, right? Or did you miss that memo in your hurry to push yourself in and defend OP’s abusive posts?"

Because @hearts I don't understand why you would jump in to defend other posters for the context in which they used the word chav.

nogreenfinger · 27/06/2020 09:24

I don't see the difference between calling someone a chav & labelling an item they buy as chavvy....

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 27/06/2020 09:24

Are they a lot younger than you? Younger people can hear a wider range of noises...

Indoctro · 27/06/2020 09:25

One for me that's not true at all. The water is chemically treated with chlorine . Whether it's circulated or not it's still full of chorine. There is zero negative effect to turning of pump for 12 hours a days and you will only catch nasty germs if you don't keep chemical levels up correctly

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 27/06/2020 09:25

I would actually really like it if a neighbour put in a hot tub - constant white noise is very soothing to my tinnitus.

OP you thought "chav" was an acronym of Council House and Violent. It's not. It's thought to derive from Romany, so its original use as an insult was racism towards travellers. (See also: "pikey" which was a popular insult when I was growing up.)
www.worldwidewords.org/topicalwords/tw-cha2.htm

Some of my tastes would probably be described as "chavvy" but I just buy the things I like and spend zero seconds worrying about what other people would think of them.

ShadowMane · 27/06/2020 09:25

@Cuntycovid

They loose heat being switched off although might consider switching it off at night although they are in the house at night and are saying its wen they are in their garden they can hear it so dont really know what that would achieve ?
You should have bought a better one then. We had a beach comber one 15? Years ago, and we could leave it completely off, and it would stay warm, even with snow on top of the lid
heartsonacake · 27/06/2020 09:26

Because hearts I don't understand why you would jump in to defend other posters for the context in which they used the word chav.

@nogreenfinger Because OP was lying and saying that specific poster had called her a chav when she hadn’t, not to mention earlier on in the thread when OP found the word funny and not at all hate speech, which she just threw out there once the thread wasn’t going her way.

Nottherealslimshady · 27/06/2020 09:28

Having neighbours means you'll have extra noise in your life which you have to accept, just like you have to accept their smells, you haven't done anything wrong but people dont always like to live and let live. Leave it if they threaten to report you tell them that's fine and you'll report them for illegal drug usage, or you can both just leave eachother alone.

nogreenfinger · 27/06/2020 09:28

I'm talking about the posts you wrote @hearts

Indoctro as an experienced hot tub keeper maybe but layzspa anit the best filter wise and a just learning person first starting out with the chemicals with a child probably not the best idea I’d say.
