Hut tub dilemma

Cuntycovid · 26/06/2020 23:57

As did half the country we decided to get a hot tub during lockdown , its causing no end of problems with the neighours though

We have lived in the same new build home for a while , friends with the neighbours no problems whatsoever and generally get on well. Dont socialise together but always pleasant exchanges so no problems , we turn a blind eye to some antisocial behaviour on their part. mainly smoking weed in their garden that blows into ours because on the whole they are good people , no loud parties or noise from theirs ect

They seem however to have taken exception to our hot tub as they dont like what they call a loud humming sound that they can hear , we are at a loss what to do about this as we canny move the hottub anywhere else in the garden , we have a large decking for garden furniture /bbq and a home made bar that take up the other spaces in the garden , my husband has spent a considerable time putting electric cables in the garden so repositioning this would be out of the question, we are mindful not to put the jets on after 11pm (checked with local council and this is the time that noise wouldnt be acceptable after) we also spent a fair whack on a set up so we would not consider not using this
Any suggestions other than moving house ?
AiBU for wanting to enjoy my garden ?
Neighbour came.round fairly angry knocking on door

@nogreenfinger

I'm talking about the posts you wrote *@hearts*
What about them? You asked why I defended that poster - I’ve explained that.

Nothing I wrote is calling OP a chav or even implying it.

draughtycatflap · 27/06/2020 09:31

It is just normal level garden noise surely. I have a fountain, one neighbour has wind chimes and another a hot tub and screeching teenagers. If people want silence they need to live somewhere more isolated.

Tell the neighbours you are thinking of replacing the hot tub with a garden TV with surround sound. They might suddenly stop complaining.

nogreenfinger · 27/06/2020 09:32

"The poster she referred to said her car was chavvy, not OP. If you buy a car and I say it’s ugly, am I calling you ugly? No, I’m not.

What does this imply @heartsonacake ?

Change the narrative all you want.

dontdisturbmenow · 27/06/2020 09:32

It's not under their window it's at the bottom of the garden positioned well away from the house
If the decking and bar mean it can only be in the one place it currently is, it must be quite a small garden, so how can it be well away from the house?

Verity35 · 27/06/2020 09:34

I really don’t like threads like this where majority of people are quite nasty. OP all I would say is look at the facts - take a look on any website such as I’ve just looked on Argos and it says on the hot tub section “we’re sorry were running low on these” and almost all of them are coming up as “limited stock” - what does this tell you? Well that A LOT of people have bought them so NO you are not BU. Enjoy your hot tub and the fact that you’re posting here shows you have consideration for others. But I would add definitely switch off at night.

It doesn’t imply anything, and nobody’s changing any narrative.

I think you need to take some time out, collect your thoughts, and return to Mumsnet when you have a coherent argument.

Hopingtobeamum · 27/06/2020 09:35

I'm not a massive hot tub fan and I'd be pissed off with the noise, but you can't move into a house where you have others in close proximity to you and complain about noise which doesn't appear to be excessive.

If I were the OP I'd passively aggressively ask the neighbours not to smoke weed before complaining about my hot tub.

nogreenfinger · 27/06/2020 09:35

@heartsonacake ok

dontdisturbmenow · 27/06/2020 09:36

There's silence and respectful level of noise. Hot tubs encourages excessive and unnecessary level of noise.

That's why I think they shouldn't be allowed at all in small houses/gardens built up areas. If these people want to enjoy them, they can move in an area where there are no close neighbours.

ODFOx · 27/06/2020 09:37

I sympathise with the neighbour tbh. The inflatable tubs with external pumps are very much louder than the proper ones. Are you planning on upgrading in due course op? Spend a bit more and the quality and sound pollution will be much better.

TARSCOUT · 27/06/2020 09:38

@singlepringle
@chrislilleyswig
Thankfully someone else noticed. 10 pages in I thought I was misreading it was all getting so serious 🤣🤣🤣

pjmask · 27/06/2020 09:40

I don't have a problem with that noise at all, my neighbours have a hot tub. The noise is very low level and I think you'd have to be listening out for it! I'd tell your neighbour that you've checked with the council and the noise is within acceptable limits. They are being precious

Ellisandra · 27/06/2020 09:41

I suspect YABU because you talk about the jets being OK until 23:00! Shock Even if you “only” in there 4x a week, and not in it late when you have an early start - you think it’s reasonable to have the jets on up until 23:00 Confused

I have a hot tub. Bloody love it. I rarely ever put the jets on because they’re so loud! It is totally unacceptable to have the jets going right up to 23:00. Really really rude.

Spidey66 · 27/06/2020 09:42

I've never understood the appeal of hot tubs. Sharing a bath with others is not my idea of fun. Can people explain exactly whats so great about them?

RhiWrites · 27/06/2020 09:45

My neighbours have one. It does make a low hum. The noise of people giggling is probably louder. I can hear them a lot especially in the summer.

But that’s life as someone who lives in a terrace of houses. There’s noise. I think the neighbours have to accept it as just one of those things.

UntamedWisteria · 27/06/2020 09:46

Do I understand that you have the hot tub on all the time, even when you are not using it?

Your electricity bills must be huge, and think about the impact on the carbon emissions.

Just switch it on when you want to use it and off when you've finished. Be considerate for your neighbours and the planet.

dingit · 27/06/2020 09:48

I hate our neighbours one too. Fortunately it's now broken Grin

ncailleach · 27/06/2020 09:52

We have a hot tub! It runs regular filter cycles that can be quite noisy but are important for the water quality (stagnant water is not a good idea!). What is your lid like? A decent well insulated lid can make a big difference on running costs as well as dampening down the noise when not in use.

nogreenfinger · 27/06/2020 09:52

@spidey66 I wouldn't buy one personally but have enjoyed a few. My fave is the ones at the Scarlet Hotel in Cornwall overlooking the sea.

Booksandwine80 · 27/06/2020 09:52

Oh my. A blow up hot tub AND an Evoque??!! I would be jealous too if I lived next door to you. Grin

BraveGoldie · 27/06/2020 09:54

The note from the council is simply saying they have the capacity only to deal with noise after 11pm. They are not recommending or saying it is ok to be inconsiderately noisy before that. So basically they are telling you you will get away with being inconsiderate before that time - not that it is ok.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 09:55

So many responses iv not read them all tried to reply to as many as I can
The reason for the post was that we do care about the neighbours hearing noise we wanted some suggestions on how to possibly rectify this of which o have received some and thankful for the posters who took the time to offer genuine help
As a previous poster has just stayed hot tubs are sold out all over the county do we are not the only people engaging in buying one

OP posts:
mynameisntlouise · 27/06/2020 09:56

I've never heard a hot tub so maybe I'm underestimating how bad it is, but i reckon I'd rather a constant buzz than the smell/smoke of weed coming into my garden.

I'd literally just say "well I tolerate you smoking weed so you'll have to tolerate the noise"

Pinkyponker · 27/06/2020 09:57

I don't think you are being unreasonable. Our neighbours have an inflatable hot tub and we don't really hear it. Only when they put the jets on but even then it really isn't a problem.

Ellisandra · 27/06/2020 09:57

@Spidey66 I have a floating hammock thing of mine. I like to lie on that reading a book in the evening. The warm water underneath relaxes me, as does the feeling from floating. I love the contrast on my skin with the cooler air. I also love the fresh air - I always feel better for it. I float and read on evenings when I’d be wearing a coat to sit outside and read, which I don’t like - so it really increases my fresh air. It’s like a set period that carved out time when I’m not just in the house (and being interrupted by everyone!) so there’s that aspect too.
