Hut tub dilemma

Cuntycovid · 26/06/2020 23:57

As did half the country we decided to get a hot tub during lockdown , its causing no end of problems with the neighours though

We have lived in the same new build home for a while , friends with the neighbours no problems whatsoever and generally get on well. Dont socialise together but always pleasant exchanges so no problems , we turn a blind eye to some antisocial behaviour on their part. mainly smoking weed in their garden that blows into ours because on the whole they are good people , no loud parties or noise from theirs ect

They seem however to have taken exception to our hot tub as they dont like what they call a loud humming sound that they can hear , we are at a loss what to do about this as we canny move the hottub anywhere else in the garden , we have a large decking for garden furniture /bbq and a home made bar that take up the other spaces in the garden , my husband has spent a considerable time putting electric cables in the garden so repositioning this would be out of the question, we are mindful not to put the jets on after 11pm (checked with local council and this is the time that noise wouldnt be acceptable after) we also spent a fair whack on a set up so we would not consider not using this
Any suggestions other than moving house ?
AiBU for wanting to enjoy my garden ?
Neighbour came.round fairly angry knocking on door

The best thing to do if you want not 5o fall out is to discuss it with them up front and agree on a compromise.

draughtycatflap · 27/06/2020 10:00

Just read the full thread. Wow! Well done for standing up to the snobby cunty wankers jumping on you @Cuntycovid.

chrislilleyswig · 27/06/2020 10:02

@Booksandwine80

Oh my. A blow up hot tub AND an Evoque??!! I would be jealous too if I lived next door to you. Grin
You missed the bar
bigknickersbigknockers · 27/06/2020 10:03

My next door but two neighbours have a hot tub, I think its the "lazy spa" kind because it is noisy. We are far enough away not to be affected by the constant hum but when they are using it it seems to make more noise. This is tolerable for me. The noise problem comes more from the people using it, loud voices laughter and screeching. It sounds more like a pool party to be honest. I feel for their neighbours who are a retired couple. Its only a matter of time before he blows his stack. If you are like these people I pity your neighbours.

Spidey66 · 27/06/2020 10:04

I've just looked up a layz vegas spa on Amazon, and realised I have actually used something just like it. Ive seen pictures of me taken in 1970 playing with the neighbours kids in the paddling pool in our back garden. My mum probably got it with her Green Shield Stamps. (For those much younger than me Green Shield Stamps were like an early version of Nectar points. You were given stamps when you shopped depending on how much you spent. You then put collected them in a book and were able to exchange them for goods when you had enough.)

SoupDragon · 27/06/2020 10:05

the snobby cunty wankers

😂😂 Like the OP (or rather her DH) who thinks the neighbours are jealous of their "better" house, Range Rover, hot tub and outdoor bar?

TrickyD · 27/06/2020 10:06

Is this the first thread where a comment on spelling and grammar would be acceptable?

After all, someone has mentioned ‘hubby’.

Spidey66 · 27/06/2020 10:06
@Spidey66 I have a floating hammock thing of mine. I like to lie on that reading a book in the evening. The warm water underneath relaxes me, as does the feeling from floating. I love the contrast on my skin with the cooler air. I also love the fresh air - I always feel better for it. I float and read on evenings when I’d be wearing a coat to sit outside and read, which I don’t like - so it really increases my fresh air. It’s like a set period that carved out time when I’m not just in the house (and being interrupted by everyone!) so there’s that aspect too.
See that sounds relaxing and appealing!

PenelopePitstop49 · 27/06/2020 10:07

DH has always wanted one, but we rented a holiday cottage in March this year (thankfully before lockdown) and the noise from it overnight drove me mad. It was on a deck outside the bedroom, and I've got really sensitive hearing so I just couldn't sleep.

Our neighbours 3 doors down have got a pond with a filter they leave running 24/7 and I can hear that at night too.

Can you look for a better quality lid or something that completely encloses it?

pjmask · 27/06/2020 10:08

Op there are certain things on Mumsnet where you don't get a response representative of what you'd get from a real life community of people

Hot tubs - you'll get a lot of very sneery, snobby comments from people who claim to be "genuinely curious" about why anyone would enjoy a hot tub, despite the fact it's a popular growing market, and most people on here seem to have a neighbour with one!

Trampolines - apparently the most unreasonable thing you can do is buy a trampoline as it's so incredibly anti social, despite the fact the majority of households with children and gardens seen to have had one at some point

Asking for money for a wedding gift - will have the majority of Mumsnetters clutching their pearls despite the fact it's more common now than wedding lists and people in the real world don't seem to have an issue with it

Ledkr · 27/06/2020 10:10

Mine makes a very quiet hum but I checked with neighbours and they can't hear it.
You can set a timer so maybe you can have it off over night to come back on in morning. Shouldn't lose too much heat that way.
I don't out my bubbles on in the evening as I think it's too noisy.

LadyofTheManners · 27/06/2020 10:10

If you can't hear it then point out the smell of their weed is worse and if they would like to pursue their complaint then you would have to consider your position as well.
That will shut them up.

We have a hot tub too and if it similar to ours they are silent unless the jets are on.

LittleMissRedHat · 27/06/2020 10:11

Just out of curiosity, where is your 1 year old whilst you and DH are outside at the far end of your garden in the hot tub until 11pm?

Roussette · 27/06/2020 10:12

I'm not sure that MN isn't representative of the general public. I think it is for once
You only have to say 'hot tub' to people and they either groan, raise their eyebrows or say 'god no, how awful'.

Alittleshortforaspacepooper · 27/06/2020 10:12

Just out of curiosity, where is your 1 year old whilst you and DH are outside at the far end of your garden in the hot tub until 11pm?

Really? Hmm

Spidey66 · 27/06/2020 10:13

@Ellisandra
Just reread your post, I read it too quickly and thought you were talking of a hammock on its own, which do es sound nice. Not so sure about a hammock above a hot tub.

BertieDrapper · 27/06/2020 10:16

We have the same tub OP. It barely Hums at all!
Yes the jets are louder but we rarely have them on to be honest. Certainly not been in it past 8pm.

Our DD mainly uses it as a giant paddling pool.

nogreenfinger · 27/06/2020 10:19

🙄🤣

overnightangel · 27/06/2020 10:21

“its jealousy as our house is much nicer than theirs”

You sound lovely

LovingLen · 27/06/2020 10:21

OP also donates to charity, though what does that has to do with having a blow up hot tub.

nogreenfinger · 27/06/2020 10:21

Asking for money for a wedding gift - will have the majority of Mumsnetters clutching their pearls despite the fact it's more common now than wedding lists and people in the real world don't seem to have an issue with it

Off topic but this is so weird because it's the norm for many cultures.

TrickyKid · 27/06/2020 10:24

You need to move it far enough from your neighbors so they can't hear it. It would drive me mad.

NeedToKnow101 · 27/06/2020 10:24

Well done for holding your own against the snobby responses on here OP.
Good that your DH is building a box to mitigate against the noise.

Twigletmama · 27/06/2020 10:26

I would absolutely bring up the fact that they are smoking weed. This is far more anti-social than the sound of a hot tub, in my opinion.

GalesThisMorning · 27/06/2020 10:26

@LittleMissRedHat - presumably asleep in bed? With maybe a portable baby monitor?

We have fires in the bottom of my garden when my little one is asleep. Its fine.
