To ask how often you replace your rug

Just that really. Do you think it's reasonable to replace a living room rug after a year or would you keep it for a few years? Does the colour make a difference? How long have you had your current rug?

OP posts:
PegasusReturns · 26/06/2020 20:10

The last rug I bought was around 3k. I expect it to outlast my -as yet non existent- grand children!

Coulddowithanap · 26/06/2020 20:12

I never knew people changed their rugs, what an awful waste.

unchienandalusia · 26/06/2020 22:30

This is another down the rabbit hole mn threads for me. Who the actual fuck thinks to replace a rug after a few months let alone a few years? Madness this way lies.

We have rugs that are hundreds of years old if that helps.

snowybean · 26/06/2020 22:40

Wow, I'm amazed that some people keep them for such a short period of time.

My parents' living room rug is about 25. The rug in my old house was about 8 years old (I moved out last year) and my current rug is 7 months. I plan to keep it for at least 10 years.

HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight · 26/06/2020 23:01

Lived in my flat for 7 years, same rugs, gave them to a charity shop when we moved as the rooms are much bigger here. Current rugs are 4 years old, no planned to replace and we have a scratchy cat and a toddler

HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight · 26/06/2020 23:08

I did get rid of the doormat after a year though, the cat vomited on it, I cleaned it, then the cat peed on it, I cleaned it, then the cat just started using it like a urinal (we had building work going on he was stressed). I got some special bio cleaner stuff, cleaned it again hung out on the line to dry, left it to get darked on because it wasn't quite dry. Came off the line overnight and a fox shat on it. There's only so much I'll do for a £10 doormat

Frostylawns · 26/06/2020 23:16

Wow! Why are people throwing things away so quickly? Our lounge rug is 21 years old which we chose together on our first holiday together. I have another one which I got on another holiday about 38 years ago.

We’re also still using the bed linen my Great Auntie gave me from the 1920’s!! Bet you can’t beat that!! Hand embroidered linen which is beautiful.

nevergoingoutagain · 26/06/2020 23:19

My in-laws just bought new rugs....after about 40 years! My mil felt she was being terribly extravagant!

I have 2 rugs, one is about 2 years old, one is one year old as I bought it when I moved house. Before that I have always bought and sold second hand. The 2 I have now are keepers as I was so happy to be able to afford new rugs!!

LockdownHairdo · 26/06/2020 23:23

I had my last rug 20+ years and only got rid because moths got into it. I expected it to last a lifetime.

Deadringer · 26/06/2020 23:40

Why would you want it to look new. What's wrong with the lived in, homely look.

Nat6999 · 26/06/2020 23:48

Mine is 7 years old, will be getting chucked when I either move house or decorate, whichever comes first.

safariboot · 26/06/2020 23:54

The one in our back room, actually a carpet offcut, has been there for years. It's kind of worn out, but I'm not volunteering to lift the really heavy desk to remove it!

I did replace the runners in the hall earlier this year, the old ones had the rubber backing just crumbling apart. They'd been down for several years.

yearinyearout · 27/06/2020 00:02

Talking of rugs, is there an effective way of cleaning a shaggy pile wool rug? I have a dog so it needs doing. Last one I tried washing it and it was a major disaster, stunk of wet dog.

midnightstar66 · 28/06/2020 09:21

I have a washable rug but it's far, far too big for my machine. It's got all sorts stuck in it from dc as it's a long pile but it was also puppy's favourite place to pee for the first couple of weeks. She'd hold on outside til she could get in and use it so I'm afraid with the absence of a laundrette, which likely wouldn't work anyway, landfill is where it's going. It's 7 years old though.

midnightstar66 · 28/06/2020 09:28

Also need to bare in mind that of course a beautifully made Persian rug worth hundreds of £ won't be getting thrown away or replaced after a year but on the other side, a £10 rug from from B&M or poundstretcher is not built to last.

NotMeNoNo · 28/06/2020 10:14

I don't think its occurred to some PPs that not everyone can afford a top quality rug. Marie Antoinette is stalking Talk these days. ( I know she never really said "let them eat cake" before the pedants get me).

Bicarb of soda and a good brush with a pet brush?

I never spend more than 100 quid on a rug. I get bored of them and use them for other things or donate. They don't need to be thrown away and there are plenty people who appreciate looked after pre owned stuff.

If I spent a fortune it might be different, but I don't. So meh.

carltongirl · 28/06/2020 10:54

20 years and going strong. Surely look after stuff and teach kids to for environmental, financial reasons?

lobsterkiller · 28/06/2020 11:04

Why would you replace a rug after such a short space of time? Mine is at least 25 years old and it was expensive, I clean it when it starts to look grubby.

This throwaway society is ridiculous.

PegasusReturns · 28/06/2020 11:14

@gamerchick even the cheapest of rugs don’t need replacing after 6mths.

I have an Ikea rug that must be in its tenth year and is going strong.

gamerchick · 28/06/2020 11:33

I don't replace them every 6 months.

I get bored with them. Some last a year, some 5.

I don't throw them away either. Sometimes I think people just like to read what they want Grin

TheNoodlesIncident · 28/06/2020 12:01

We have two rugs, both striped Laura Ashley ones with a thick dense pile. The living room one has loops and the cat snags her claws in them when she does her roll-around-on-the-plush-rug antics. It still looks OK despite this and I anticipate having both rugs forever, they are very robust feeling.

They are too bulky to go in the washing machine but fortunately we have a Bissell carpet cleaner that we bought from Amazon. We've used this to clean the sofa arms as well as the bit of carpet that smelled of cat wee (from when said cat was a kitten) and will use it to clean the rugs when they need it. At the moment just vacuuming with the Shark is keeping them looking good. DC's bedroom rug is bright blue and red stripes so doesn't show the dirt much, living room is shades of duck egg, cream and light beige but doesn't seem to get grubby, just crumbs sprinkled on it mostly?

I can recommend the Bissell carpet cleaner for those with rug issues (and sofa arms), it sucks the water back out so the cleaned area dries quite quickly and the detergent smells very nice and fresh. Like BalloonSlayer, we gloated over the filthy water coming out, so very satisfying! Grin

I am sure you've heard about that place. 😂

Were you just searching for old rug threads to join in with @roroflint ?

Calmandmeasured1 · 29/01/2021 09:43

They should last years and years. Only boredom with colour would cause me to change one. I suppose it depends on the quality. I'm not a person who has fads so don't get easily bored by my furnishings so don't go for cheap and cheerful ones.

Have you tried cleaning it with a Rug Doctor?
