To ask how often you replace your rug

Just that really. Do you think it's reasonable to replace a living room rug after a year or would you keep it for a few years? Does the colour make a difference? How long have you had your current rug?

I’m feeling guilty for wanting to replace my 10 year old rug. It’s too small for our house and our hoover just can’t pick up all of the crumbs out the deep shag pile.

MiniTheMinx · 25/06/2020 20:27

We have antique carpets or rugs if you prefer! nope I haven't thrown any away and no plans to do so. I think it's odd to keep replacing things, and environmentally and socially irresponsible.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/06/2020 20:30

You are bonkers.

Some of mine are over one hundred years old, some are new, but they all get cleaned and treated well and will last for decades.

ItsNotAGameOfSubbuteoMatthew · 25/06/2020 21:42

Ours is 11 years old. The DC play on it every day. It's brown so hides all the issues. Changing every year or more often 😱

Saracen · 26/06/2020 13:30

Only when it's totally wrecked. When it's moderately wrecked it gets demoted to a scruffier room. Eventually it makes its way to the garage, shed or cut into bits for the car boot.

But I never acquire a rug in the first place without thinking very hard about whether I want to live with it for many years. It takes me a really long time to choose a rug!

woodhill · 26/06/2020 13:35

Perhaps a darker colour with dogs and dc?

Wasteful to keep replacing things imo

Have kept door mats for years

Home42 · 26/06/2020 13:39

I borrow my mums carpet cleaner and wash the rugs roughly annually. I think maybe they get replaced every 10’years or so!

Yeahnahmum · 26/06/2020 14:09

..... Hmm...
Years I keep my rugs op
Years.... I even with kids. And dogs.

MikeUniformMike · 26/06/2020 14:58

Mine are machine washable. They get grubby very quickly despite a no shoes indoors policy. They don't particularly look grubby.

DollyDoneMore · 26/06/2020 15:08

A year?! WTF?!

I would hope to keep a rug for maybe a decade, at least.

PumpkinP · 26/06/2020 15:24

I don’t think people are talking about fluffy/ shaggy rugs are they?? As I have one but it looks really horrible now and is hard to clean with young kids bits of food and dirt just get stuck in it. Doesn’t fit in the washing machine either and when I’ve tried to clean it with those vanish carpet products it doesn’t look any better. Only had it about a year and will need a new one soon.

MikeUniformMike · 26/06/2020 15:39

You can wash fluffy rugs by hand in the bath, and dry them flat in the sun on a very hot day.
Don't use regular washing powder, unless you have to, but Stardrops in ok. Once you have washed it rinse it.
Try to squeeze out as much as you can of the water as it will be much, much heavier wet.

Whathappenedtothelego · 26/06/2020 15:45

I have 2 rugs. Both over 15 years old. One was second hand when I got it, no idea how old. Still look like new. They have moved around between various rooms but it has never occurred to me to get rid of them.

DC did have a playmat style rug from ikea when they were smaller, I did get rid of that (Freecycle) after about 6 or 7 years.

ShinyMe · 26/06/2020 16:19

Blimey. I bought a rug I loved when I moved in, summer 2000, and i'm still using it. It still looks pretty much as it did when I got it, despite me having cats and having dropped a bottle of exploding red wine over it once.

PumpkinP · 26/06/2020 16:24

Can't wash it in the bath tried that once with a duvet and it was a complete nightmare

MikeUniformMike · 26/06/2020 16:56

Offer them on Freecycle or Freegle or something. Someone will be able to use it. If it needs a clean, or if it's only suitable for use in a shed or something, put that on the listing.

MikeUniformMike · 26/06/2020 16:58

I'll wash most things, but things like duvets are difficult to wash. My washing machine takes a large load and it's a godsend.

motherheroic · 26/06/2020 17:02

Just get it professionally cleaned. No need to toss a rug every year. Jesus.

showgirl · 26/06/2020 18:18

My rug cost a fortune. It has lasted 8 years so far and still looks perfectly fine. I can't see why you would need to replace it that often? It's like a carpet. Do people replace carpets that quickly?

tonsattingforbjudes · 26/06/2020 18:25

Good grief! I've just worked out that mine is 23years old. Not special/antique or anything but it is wool (I think!)
Even I can't justify replacing it as it's perfectly fine, although I have considered it!

Msmcc1212 · 26/06/2020 18:45

DrinkFeckArseGirls

Yes. No wonder. I’m horrified by the throw away culture. Sad

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 26/06/2020 19:10

No rugs.

Nightmare trip hazards IMO. Donate to a charity & embrace your flooring.

BalloonSlayer · 26/06/2020 19:25

My Mum used to wash rugs (and curtains) by putting them in the bath. We would all get summoned to come up and marvel at how dirty the water was. We were all: Hmm

Years later I washed our hearthrug and was really disappointed that there was no one else in the house, because I really wanted to show someone how much dirt had come out. Sad

garbagegirl · 26/06/2020 19:29

I could not justify that but i don't judge you. For a long time I had to buy secondhand. Thanks to the 12mnth replacers I could have nice things!

BlueyBee · 26/06/2020 20:06

Years later I washed our hearthrug and was really disappointed that there was no one else in the house, because I really wanted to show someone how much dirt had come out.

This is why I only buy washable rugs. We have hard floors because I think carpets are pretty disgusting really, and I hoover and steam mop them regularly because I like things to be really clean. I don’t want an unwashed rug that has months (or even years) worth of dirt built up in it making things dirty again. Shoes are banned inside and the rugs are washed fortnightly.

Everyone tells me that this is weird though so know I’m probably in the minority. My husband tells me that he has never known anyone else to wash rugs!
