To ask how often you replace your rug

Just that really. Do you think it's reasonable to replace a living room rug after a year or would you keep it for a few years? Does the colour make a difference? How long have you had your current rug?

I got mine 4 years ago and haven't replaced it. Should I have?!

ChipstickCharlie · 25/06/2020 15:27

We have this one in our kitchen diner and it acts almost as a doormat even though it's huge! It's too big to go anywhere else and we didn't realise this when we moved home. It's cream but it's also 'popcorn' textured so always looks clean. I properly clean it twice a year with rug doctor. It was about £380 two years ago so I didn't consider chucking it when we stood in the house wondering where on earth it could go!

I inherited a Kashmir rug from MIL that goes back to at least the 1960’s. After lockdown I will get its fringes professionally restored and the whole rug cleaned, but it’s otherwise good for another 60 years, and is a nice memento of her lovely old house on the moors.
My hearth rug was hand woven to order by Berber women - I chose the pattern while on holiday in North Africa, and it was shipped home to me when finished. It’s beautiful, and now over 20 years old and in perfect condition. I wouldn’t dream of throwing it out! Surely we have evolved beyond the throwaway society - nobody can still claim ignorance of the environmental damage it does.

knittingaddict · 25/06/2020 17:04

I would treat a rug like a fitted carpet and keep it for years. Why wouldn't I? Hoover regularly, clean if necessary, replace when if got too old or I'd grown to hate it.

People replace their rugs after less than a year? Not in my world they don't.

knittingaddict · 25/06/2020 17:08

Amazed to see how many people keep them for so many years. Thought by that time they'd be worn out. I will try to clean it with a rug doctor or similar to see if that makes it come up better before I decide whether to replace it.

Honestly op, what do you do with your rugs to wear them out in a matter of months?

On second thoughts, don't answer that.

NotMeNoNo · 25/06/2020 17:16

This is probably a bit like Commander Vimes boots. In that if you have money for an antique/top quality rug it could last a lifetime, but if you have money for a BM stores rug it might be falling to pieces after a year or so.

Alaimo · 25/06/2020 17:24

I have an Ikea rug (so, pretty cheap). Bought it 2.5 years ago and looks like new. I did deliberately choose a darker colour so you wouldn't notice any dirt/discolouring...

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 25/06/2020 17:26

I don't own a rug, but with all home furniture, carpets, curtains etc I buy the best that we can afford in timeless styles and keep them for years. It's very expensive buying cheap and replacing often.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/06/2020 19:23

Just about all the furniture, rugs etc in our house are cheap, usually ikea, supermarkets etc. It's all lasted and is decent quality. The rug I think cost about £60, so hardly aspirational prices. Some of the 15-20 YO ikea furniture I half wish it would fall apart, then I could justify replacing it.

I've just had to throw one out because it was being eaten by moths. It was only 8 yrs old & I was thinking it was still fairly new.

BarbedBloom · 25/06/2020 19:39

My rug is about 4 years old and looks brand new still but I don't have kids and my cats just lie on it. I use my carpet shampoo and cleaner on it every 2 or 3 months.

Scruffyoak · 25/06/2020 19:41

till they break lol.

Currently mine is 10yrs old. No plans yet. I'm in shock at 6mths

MrsR87 · 25/06/2020 19:54

Wow! I would never even think of throwing a rug away after 1 year. We recently invested in one for the living room that was £600. It's woollen and the instructions say not to use a household carpet cleaner on in but a few months ago we got harissa paste on it, so we had no choice but to clean it properly. I was so worried it would shrink or smell but it's all good! I intend to keep it for many more years and clean as and when necessary!

TrickyD · 25/06/2020 19:55

In front of our piano and on the landing we have two rugs, Both were made by my mum before I was born. I am 76.
It has never occurred to me to replace them. They are a bit worn but full of character. (like me)

speakout · 25/06/2020 19:56

Only one rung in the house, in my DS room. When it gets grubby I wash it in the washing maching and line dry it outside.

roundandsideways · 25/06/2020 20:01

I have two rugs and a runner I've had for 10 years. The runner is just a bit threadbare, which I'm disappointed with. One dcat has wrecked and the other youngest ds has wrecked. Those are the ones I'll be replacing

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 25/06/2020 20:06

Current living room rug is almost 25 years old and has been repaired once.

The rug in the spare room is nearly as old as I am.

@DixieFlatline means "on the side/cash in hand/aside from my usual work" type thing
Known as on a foreigner

MatildaTheCat · 25/06/2020 20:11

The dining room rug was chucked out last week. We have been doing Pilates in there and the rug turned out to be remarkably stinky. On turning it over it was clear the cat had been using it as a garden substitute for a while. She’s 20 so I forgave her. Even though she has a cat flap and a litter tray.

The replacement was quite cheap on the basis that she might find this one similarly attractive. On the other hand my hall rug is at least 20 years old. Shaggy rugs age and clean les well than short tufted ones.

jimmyhill · 25/06/2020 20:13

Ugh who are the dirty bastards only replacing their rugs every six months? We have a new one every two weeks and wash it once in between

CherryPavlova · 25/06/2020 20:14

I can’t imagine changing our rugs unless they were damaged in a flood or fire. They’ve survived a couple of hundred years, why would we change them?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/06/2020 20:14

DH runs the carpet cleaner over it every couple of months...

rodentfeet · 25/06/2020 20:17

learnt that when you got kids, rugs are a bad idea.. when kids are ill the rug gets covered in sick etc... had to throw it away.. havent bothered to get another, maybe when kids are older...

MinnieMountain · 25/06/2020 20:20

We bought ours for our first house- roughly 13 years old. It's a deep red one from John Lewis that we hoover once a week.

I'm very jealous of all the antique rugs PP own.
