To ask how often you replace your rug

Just that really. Do you think it's reasonable to replace a living room rug after a year or would you keep it for a few years? Does the colour make a difference? How long have you had your current rug?

I have had my white fake sheepskin rug that cost about a tenner down in front of my fireplace for 5 years! No idea what some of you are doing.Grin

akkakk · 25/06/2020 11:01

My hallway rug is 1909 - quite nice in a 1910 house!
So, 111 years so far, and still going strong :)

Flyingagainstreason · 25/06/2020 11:05

I think people are being a bit harsh! She did actually say she would sell it. But it hasn’t lived up to her expectations! Which is fair enough. I’ve bought things and then not been happy about them. Given them to charity or sold it.

Op- I think HG do a specific cleaner for heavy use areas. You could give that a go.

PrayingandHoping · 25/06/2020 11:08

How are u cleaning it?

Mine is 6 years old, light colours and I have 2 large dogs. I have a VAX platinum carpet cleaner and it comes up lovely

I wouldn't consider replacing a rug until it was worn out (Like u would with carpet). It's got years of life left in it

edgeware · 25/06/2020 11:09

Think of the shops that sell antique, sought after Persian rugs. Good quality rugs are meant to last...

PeachMoon · 25/06/2020 11:09

That's blown my mind that you would consider replacing an 8 month old rug because it doesn't look brand new. Just get a professional carpet cleaner round?! It's really not very expensive!

lazylinguist · 25/06/2020 11:10

If rugs only lasted a year or two, I would do without rugs. What a waste of money and resources!

Mine after a year the shaggy rug was getting tatty looking and didn't fit anywhere else
Thanks to the wonderful shop sales a half price replacement
The rug dear JonhammIsmyjam was given to family it looks so much fresh and those bloody snappy rugs hold so much mess and crumbs I think it was a health hazard... I am joking

TheresABearInThere · 25/06/2020 11:24

I can’t imagine why you’d replace rugs each year, I just thought they were things you kept until they became very unfashionable or wore out, mine were cheap to mid range in price and they are fine even though they’d be coming up to 10 years old. It just seems a waste of resources and money to replace rugs, like buying a new microwave or lamp etc Each year, why would you?

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 25/06/2020 11:28

A good 20 years. But they start looking tatty after about 10-15. It depends if they have tassels along the time edge and things

Chaaaaaching · 25/06/2020 11:43

We’ve had ours about 6/7 years and it’s still fine. We’ve had dogs/cats/kids defile it many times but you just clean it and carry on. There really is no need to replace them every year, I am gobsmacked that anyone would replace them so frequently. Humans really are a blight on this planet.

Suzanne12 · 25/06/2020 11:45

Amazed to see how many people keep them for so many years. Thought by that time they'd be worn out. I will try to clean it with a rug doctor or similar to see if that makes it come up better before I decide whether to replace it.

SpillTheTeaa · 25/06/2020 11:49

Depends if you're changing the colour and if it is manky.
I got rid of my rug because the ends started to look gross

NotMeNoNo · 25/06/2020 11:50

The only problem with a Rug Doctor is the alarming amount of dirt it sucks out of carpets you thought were clean! Hope it goes well.

JoleneExotic · 25/06/2020 11:51

Vanish carpet foam ... I do mine every 3 months or so. Or spot clean marks. I have a toddler and two dogs, we also eat in the living room and the rug is beige and cream. I want years from it.

Rebelwithallthecause · 25/06/2020 11:52

Mine is currently 5 years old
Its still in tip top condition so wouldn’t replace it

ballsdeep · 25/06/2020 11:53

I could easily replace every 6 months. We have a long haired one (why did I do that?) And it's a bigger to hoover with the Lego pieces hidden in there and a toddler!!! And I find it goes flat really quickly where we walk. I think it's worse now we've all been here for ages

Bargebill19 · 25/06/2020 11:54

Wash it? Pass it on to someone who needs it?
Mine are 20+ years old. I wash them outside as needed. It’s a very satisfying job using a hose.

snappycamper · 25/06/2020 12:05

Years and years. I haven't ever thought of a rug as any more a disposable item than a fitted carpet.

This

Halfwreckedbykids · 25/06/2020 12:11

One of our rugs is almost 50 years old. However it's a huge Persian rug and like new. It's pale and just beautiful. It cost 2000 sterling back in the day...disclaimer dad bought it. It's been through dogs and 3 kids but needs special cleaning. Itsolder than I am.
Spent 600 on a suggest year and still perfect. To be honest when you get s good One it does last.

PrayingandHoping · 25/06/2020 12:11

If you haven't been using a proper carpet cleaner then it's not had a proper go over

Those spray on foam ones aren't nearly compatible to a proper carpet cleaner machine like a rug doctor or a vax

MistyIsland · 25/06/2020 12:21

My rug in my living room is about 8 years old cost £££ it’s a pale cream and gold colour, so far surviving 2 kids, 2 dogs and 3 cats. Gets professionally cleaned every 12-18 months I do it the rest of the time maybe once every 3 months.

Can’t say I’ve ever thrown one away, have given some away but that’s about it. I have rugs which blend with most colours so when I change the paint I don’t have to do the rugs.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 25/06/2020 12:26

My living room rug is 8-10 years old. I can't remember exactly. It's only a cheap IKEA one but other than 1 stain looks as good as new. I need to hire a rug dr at some point and give all my carpets and rugs a going over.
My previous living room rug which is about 12 years old is in DS1s room. It looks as good as new after a go in the washing machine.

shittingthreeeyedraven · 25/06/2020 12:28

Mine are antique Persian ones which I’ve inherited so goodness only knows how old! 2 cats and a toddler and thy are fine! This is horrendous to hear of people chucking them out after less than a year. Although they are probably the same people who redecorate every other year and buy everything new to ‘match’ and throw out all cushions, lamps etc
