To ask how often you replace your rug

Just that really. Do you think it's reasonable to replace a living room rug after a year or would you keep it for a few years? Does the colour make a difference? How long have you had your current rug?

I buy washable ones from the rugseller on eBay I think or they might have a website.

We have some round ones and a runner in our house as we have Ddog and young kids. They have rubber backing so stay in place, are well priced and just need a 40C cycle to get them clean and fresh again. We once went for a "naice" trendy rug from way fair and it was heavy and got discoloured and stank after a few months even when I used my MILs vax machine on it so we've decided to stick with practical ones until DCs are older at least.

SwedishK · 25/06/2020 12:50

Most of them I have had for year although when my dogs were puppies I had to replace the downstairs ones as they either got chewed on or peed on. Otherwise I don't replace for years, if at all. Don't see why I would.

notso · 25/06/2020 13:37

One of mine is an antique Persian rug. It's ancient and has a few patches where it's a bit more faded or the fire has spat at it but that adds to its charm. I love it.

Dishwashersaurous · 25/06/2020 13:40

The idea of replacing a rug after six months is literally making my brain explode.

Rugs are ten years plus and absolutely fine

Reedwarbler · 25/06/2020 13:49

I've got Persian ones that were in the family home when I was little - I even have a Persian one my grandmother owned. They are as tough as old boots and extremely hard wearing. I think the only rugs I have ever chucked out were those cheap woven rag rugs Ikea used to sell in various colours, and which didn't last long.
Apart from chucking out something that still has life in it, it's the expense. I wouldn't want to have to budget for a new large rug every year, it's such a waste of money. Use that cash to buy a decent carpet shampooer instead.

Hillarious · 25/06/2020 13:50

Twenty seven years. From India, via John Lewis, wool. Choose the style well and buy quality.

Purpleartichoke · 25/06/2020 13:52

The only rug that gets replaced regularly is the entrance mat where we wipe our feet. Even that lasts a couple of years.

mineofuselessinformation · 25/06/2020 13:53

I have a cow skin and love it.
It already has a bit of a bald patch, but it's part of its character.

gamerchick · 25/06/2020 13:56

I love rugs, usually I change them once a year but I find other uses for them.

Nobody is allowed to stand on them in shoes though and gets rolled up if there's company over. I'm a bit of a faffer with them so they last.

DKanin · 25/06/2020 13:57

I keep rugs for years/indefinitely and get them cleaned. I'd only throw one out if it had been absolutely wrecked by children or animals or someone had thrown red wine all over it and it couldn't be saved

Ginfordinner · 25/06/2020 13:59

The hand made rug that my mum made for me when I left home 42 years ago is still going strong.

I can't get over the fact that people see them as disposable items Sad

nancy75 · 25/06/2020 14:02

I’ve got a flokati rug that my mum & dad bought the year they had me - I’m 45! It washes & still looks as good as new.

VenusOfWillendorf · 25/06/2020 14:04

Years and years. I bring them outside and bash them a couple of times a year to freshen them up. But I'm not hard on rugs.
I don't use rugs in the bathroom - I've a foot towel that goes into the washing machine with the rest of the towels.

Ninkanink · 25/06/2020 14:04

Our current living room rugs are about 4 years old and I envisage us keeping them for at least another 5 years, if not indefinitely.

My children are grown up and we don’t have pets, so that probably has something to do with the longevity of our soft furnishings.

Summerfortheages · 25/06/2020 14:08

I Freecycle mine after a couple of years , it does get steam cleaned., so I can get a new one. Someone is always happy to take them.

Wotrewelookinat · 25/06/2020 14:14

I’m shocked you’d replace a rug so quickly unless it’s beyond hope. We’ve been married 17 years and have only replaced our living room rug once. We hoover it most days and use our vax carpet cleaner on it regularly. The first rug didn’t get chucked but was put to use in the garage.

Poppyismyfavourite · 25/06/2020 14:27

Hmm I'm looking at our wool rug that came from DHs grans house... Bet it's at least 20...

employeewoes · 25/06/2020 14:28

Wash it in the bath.

Our rug (light grey) is 5 years old and looks almost as good as new. We have 2 kids and 2 cats and it is in the living room.

It gets washed in the bath twice yearly with vanish. Hoovered every week with our shark.

dottiedodah · 25/06/2020 14:29

Why not get a quote from carpet cleaner? After that maybe shake outside once a week or so?(maybe this is why so many people used to beat their rugs/ mats! Mop any spills straight away and adjust expectations of spotless home accordingly!

WanderingMilly · 25/06/2020 14:32

I've had a cream rug for years, but that's because I keep it beautifully. I live on my own, no kids or pets and I don't wear shoes in the house. Rugs are cleaned regularly.

I would replace if it was stained, discoloured, uncleanable......

PanamaPattie · 25/06/2020 14:42

My rug in front of the fire is over 30 years old. I give a hoover and shake occasionally. My sofa and chairs were inherited are at least 50 years old. It works. Why change?

FinallyHere · 25/06/2020 14:42

When I first bought my own place, my mother very kindly offered me 'any thing I wanted ' from their house. One of the treasures I liberated was a creme Flokati rug.

That was 1990, I donated it to the local Battersea dogs home last summer when we replaced the flooring and it no longer looked right.

Nearly thirty years with no idea how long my parents had had it. My house is decorated in my neutral, natural colours and everything works together. I love it and spend no time changing it. We are all different, it's good to do what you want. Enjoy.

DixieFlatline · 25/06/2020 14:49

Fortunately I know a man who does 'foreigners' so £100 for 7 rooms & 2 rugs is money well spent in my book.

...what?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 25/06/2020 15:10

Mine are all antique Turkish, Persian and Afghan, I imagine I'll keep them forever. They were around long before I owned them and will be around long after I'm gone!

Coughsyrupsucks · 25/06/2020 15:17

Normally every three years probably on average. The last lot was a year but we had a new puppy who trashed them. I’m a big fan of ones from Wayfair and Next as they are so cheap.
