Or am I just too picky?

Whenever DP has a roast dinner, he'll put his gravy on and then mash his roast potatoes and veg together into one big pile in the middle of the plate. He'll then douse it in more gravy and mash it some more.

Don't get me wrong, I love my gravy and have quite a bit but i think it just looks soooo wrong when he does this, even more so when we have Sunday lunch out.

I used to work with a woman who did this with every meal. No matter what it was. I found it quite immature.

I love mashing my food up but I wouldn't eat like that in front of anyone else. I don't think it's very good manners.

Kids are totally different, they need to learn first. If they did that, I would tell them not to, if they are old enough, but definitely not take it away.

I do that to & then mop up all the left over mush with white bread.

Dh isn't quite as bad, but he likes cutting up all his dinner before starting to eat, then just eats with a fork. So every meal starts with a table shaking, plate scratching, knife and fork scrapping cutting up exercise. Drives me bonkers so I make an excuse to leave the table for the first couple of minutes of dinner.

Thankfully he doesn't do it when we are out.

My exH used to do this with an Indian takeaway. Rice, meat, veg, all mixed into one revolting mess on the plate. Then he’d scoff it like a pig. He’s dead now. 😱

Annoyedatyourbs, I agree, but Op says he does this when they have Sunday lunch out. So, it's not just at home.

My dad used to eat like that because he had really shit, barely there teeth even in his 40's. As a result, crispy food would hurt his gums, his teeth, get stuck etc. Very few people knew , even I didn't the full extent until years and year later.

I don't know what's with all the preciousness about food and eating lately.

Do you have food? Is it enough? Is it nice? Then 1.be grateful 2.keep your nose in your own plate.

If he eats it with a knife and fork and no elbows on the table, and only at home, then I would ignore. If he mushes it up, then wraps an arm around the plate and shovels in with a fork then I would be totally disgusted. Cannot abide bad table manners.

Yes that's really bad table manners. Is he American?

Report
bouncydog · 21/06/2020 21:29

Oh dear just seen it’s also when you’re out - I would tell him his manners are disgusting and he can go out on his own!

Sorry but that sounds disgusting

For my roasts (at home, not out) I cut everything up and cover with the mash/stuffing making a “pie”, I know it’s childish but I like it Blush

@UnfinishedSymphon

Hard not to look when we're sitting opposite each other

You need to make the table look prettier. What about a nice flower display between the two of you? This should do it.

That must look revolting when you sit opposite him. I don’t think I would cook him a roast dinner again if he insisted on doing this.

So many food control issues around here. What business is it of yours if your friend/ kids/ partner want to mash up their food, put seasoning or sauce on it. Eat you own food & be done with it. If my husband tried to tell me how to eat, I'd tell him to mind his own fucking business, but he wouldn't because he's not a twat.

That's very odd, I've not seen anyone do that. Why does he?? Agreed that I would also not allow my children to eat that way.

@LillianBlandGrin

I could not abide this kind of messy eating
I also can’t stand the clicking jaws and scoffing sounds

I honestly would rather eat on my own
Luckily I do!

To add my children aged 2, 4 and 6 eat with considerably more decorum

ChloeCC · 21/06/2020 22:04

It wouldn't bother me if your boyfriend did it but if mine did I'd be disgusted. Yuk.

Is he Dutch? It's an oldfashioned dutch way of eating.

It's the mashing of fried egg and tinned tomatoes that really gets me

^ Ugh. I'd leave the table, too.
My husband likes his ratios, so everything disappears one bite at time in perfect proportion. He will even occasionally turn his plate so as to concentrate on one section of his meal at a time.
It's odd, but he doesn't try it with pasta or soup, etc.
