Or am I just too picky?

Whenever DP has a roast dinner, he'll put his gravy on and then mash his roast potatoes and veg together into one big pile in the middle of the plate. He'll then douse it in more gravy and mash it some more.

Don't get me wrong, I love my gravy and have quite a bit but i think it just looks soooo wrong when he does this, even more so when we have Sunday lunch out.

Maybe you could put his gravy and veg in a blender for him. Save him the bother.

Crinkle77 · 21/06/2020 19:48

@YaWeeSkitter

I do this when I have mashable food. Ive just had Mince and Tatties which mash together nicely. But not when eating out . Not because of etiquette but because I like to concentrate on the textures that are on the fork.

Dont look if its annoying you.

@YaWeeSkitter I've had mince and spuds for tea too and love mashing it together. Mmmmm
DamnYankee · 21/06/2020 19:50

I think it's hilarious, but might cook that dinner a little less often...
Reminds me of that scene from "A Christmas Story," when the mother coaxes the picky younger brother (who has piled up his food like your DH) to eat my saying, "Show Mommy how the piggies eat!"
And he does. Face first. Snorts, grunts and all.

rc22 · 21/06/2020 19:51

I would find it acceptable with mash but it's plain wrong with roasties!!

DamnYankee · 21/06/2020 19:51

by saying, not my saying

GrouchyKiwi · 21/06/2020 19:51

Is he Dutch?

AryaStarkWolf · 21/06/2020 19:53

Me, its his dinner, let him enjoy it

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/06/2020 19:53

Sounds like a waste of a roast potato. The joy of them is the crispiness. My DH is opposite... Everything has to be seperate on his plate, and he eats each item one at a time (so all his carrots, all his beef etc). I find that annoying, but it harms no one. But mushing it all together... Urgh.

JuneWind · 21/06/2020 19:55

Slightly going against the grain, but I don’t really think this is too bad!

I’m normally a bit of a stickler for table manners, but my DH regularly mixes/mashes food together and always really enjoys it. And on the few occasions I’ve joined him, I’ve enjoyed it too! Especially with gravy!

lidoshuffle · 21/06/2020 19:55

Maybe I'm just an old fart, but some of the table manners AIBUs that come up are awful. I find it such a turn off when adults can't use cutlery correctly/shovel food in/ eat like babies etc.

It's just a basic life-skill.

Pickles89 · 21/06/2020 19:59

Other people messing with food is always gross. It doesn't matter how gross I am with my food, that's fine, but other people, no, I can't tolerate that!

user47000000000 · 21/06/2020 19:59

Wow. How controlling some people are.

Zaphodsotherhead · 21/06/2020 20:00

I've just posted on another thread about how XH used to mash all his food up into one lump of sloppy baby-food and then shovel it in. And I used to work so hard to make dinners of varying colours and textures - you know, all that 'you eat with your eyes' rubbish...and then he'd do that.

Divorced him. Not entirely for that, but it's very unattractive.

Sally872 · 21/06/2020 20:01

Yabu. I like to see people enjoy their meal, not bothered what the do with it.

Singinghollybob · 21/06/2020 20:03

It wouldn't be how I'd eat it but it wouldn't really bother me. I think its dramatic for people to be declaring they wouldnt stay with someone who did that or proclaim its disgusting or disrespectful. He's still eating and enjoying his food.
As long as he didn't make slurry noises or eat with his mouth open, it's live and let live in my book.
Bubble and Squeak is pretty much the same surely? And that's acceptable

theendoftheworldasweknowit · 21/06/2020 20:05

If most people were honest, they would admit to eating certain foods differently in private than in company.

Your DP is eating like a child - fine at home amongst close relatives, but not really the done thing when out in public.

YouCanBeMyWingmanAnyday · 21/06/2020 20:05

He can do what he likes with his food IMO YABU

Katinski · 21/06/2020 20:06

@QueenArseClangers

Has he not got teeth?
GrinGrinGrin
Justsocross · 21/06/2020 20:07

My husband does this too . He makes most meals look like baby food !!! It gives me rage as it makes me feel physically sick Grin so yadnbu

YouCanBeMyWingmanAnyday · 21/06/2020 20:08

My DP is blind and how he eats his food is different but absolutely NOTHING to do with me. If you really love someone then these silly insignificant annoyances should not be deal breakers and really after a while should not even register

SadSisters · 21/06/2020 20:09

Very poor table manners! I would find it off putting too.

UnfinishedSymphon · 21/06/2020 20:09

Not sure it's controlling to not like something but hey, I'm not surprised someone has said that.

To answer a few questions, I did not marry him hence the DP reference, no he doesn't shovel it in, yes he does have teeth, no he doesn't use 2 spoons.

I just find it odd, especially as he loves crispy roasties but demolishes them with gravy straight away

Oldraver · 21/06/2020 20:10

Yes this another thing that OH does, I just try and not look.

It's the mashing of fried egg and tinned tomatoes that really gets me. I have to leave the table

Moveslikejagger1 · 21/06/2020 20:10

I do this with a lot of food. I love it. If I’m ill my DH offers to make me my favourite food and mash it for me. That’s true love. He asks if I ‘want mine a mess’. It doesn’t look great but tastes delicious.

I don’t understand separate eaters. Oh I’m really enjoying these 20 peas. Then I’ll enjoy dry potato then I’ll enjoy meat. I find it odd. I enjoy the taste of different foods together and while you can do that by taking a bit of each it’s easier to mash it all together.

I don’t do it if Im out for dinner however.

Guineverez · 21/06/2020 20:10

I wouldn't personally mash it all once, but I will sometimes mash a couple of spoons worth, eat that and repeat, it's really nice. It doesn't ruin the roasties, you get yummy crispy bits mixed with gravy and veg,.
