It's approx 5 miles

If not, what are main reasons you can't/don't?

Not every day since lockdown but yes I did every day before. I don't have a car and walk to work which is 40 minutes each way plus the school run. I usually do closer to 20k steps.

I probably average 8k steps per day at the moment but that doesn't really reflect my level of activity, as I'm doing yoga, cycling and weight training as well as walks and short runs. "Steady state cardio is pointless" - how absolutely absurd to say that! If everyone walked enough per day it would significantly change the nation's health in many many ways. It might be pointless to you @makingmiracles if you're some kind of athlete, but to most people it's the most accessible, useful and cheap way to be active there is.

Pre-lockdown I averaged 12-14k a day without trying but was shocked when I put my pedometer on and found I could easily end up on a tenth of that while working from home! It's a bit of a blunt instrument as it doesn't capture things like strength training or cycling, but it is useful as a rough barometer of how active I've been. It has spurred me to start couch25k which I'm enjoying!

Nowhere near. Not remotely. I average about 3K steps a day.

And as for why, meh, a load of reasons. Single parent, 3 kids under 5 so they can't walk far, desk job that's a commute by car and I work through my lunch break so I can leave early and don't pay a fortune on childcare. I have a healthy BMI towards the lower end, eat well, and I'm doing the best I can. It's just not a priority in my life right now

I find it's quite crap at detecting housework and cooking. I'd probably up my recorded step level on a weekend quite a lot if I wore the watch on my right rather than left wrist!

We went for a walk yesterday. It was 4.1 miles and for me about 9500 steps. I am 5'5 with an average step length.

It felt a LOT longer than 5 miles. People used to walk 5 miles to school, or to buy a loaf of bread. We are all do lazy nowadays.

Fitbits tell lots of lies about steps. If you wear a fitbit and think you get 10,000 steps pottering around atq home, you have been sadly deceived.

Yes, I remember wearing my Fitbit to the theatre and when I came out I had done 3000 more steps that when I went on with all the clapping.

If I’m at work I would normally do about 5-7000 unless I’ve ended up doing a lot of running around. My job is office based and we have a car park outside the office, so limited walking.

During lockdown I’ve been doing about 12-22000, I normally go out for a walk with ds in the morning which gives me about 6-7000 then general pottering around counts about 5000. If I go for a run that will add on another 10,000.

When I’m eventually allowed back to work I’d like to keep up with 10,000+a day.

Just before lockdown I was on crutches and Managing maybe 1-2k a day around the house or at work. I’m still waiting for a knee surgery datE but as that’s likely to be a couple Of years now I’ve been working on building my leg strength. I haven’t used crutches since early March. By early April I would walk to my local shop and that was like doing a marathon And only about 3k steps a day, but I started building it up by walking every single day. 7 weeks ago I started a StepBet and it’s been amazing. It keeps me accountable. I have to do 7k steps a day 4 x a week, 10k 2 x a week and have one rest day. I completed my first 6 week bet and made 10% on my investment. I’m now onto my second StepBet. I’ve bought a treadmill for when the weather stops me walking outside.
I’m still walking less than 10k most days but that’s still several hundred percent more than I was doing before lockdown and I’m bloody proud of how I’m doing.

I log about 3500 in and around the house on a normal day.
School run is about 4000, twice a day so when the kids are in school that adds 8000 a day to my total.
Supermarket trip usually adds 1500 or so.
I work from home even in normal times but I go out to see clients about 25 hours per week, working usually adds about 800 steps an hour to my total.
I walk for pleasure, evenings and weekends. My short routes add about 8,500 to my daily total.
My long routes are for days off and around 35,000-40,000 steps.
Since lockdown I run 5km 2-3 times per week. This adds 5500 or so.

I rarely go under 120,000 steps a week.

I walk about 10km most days thanks to lockdown, it’s around 25k-30k steps. It’s literally just me walking into my city centre and back.

The only thing is though, my figure looks weird. My legs/bum/hips are all extra slim and toned - making my torso look untoned/top heavy in comparison. I was already a slim pear shape, I feel like I’ve lost my curves!

Think it depends on what's measuring your steps. I've never forgotten the thread where posters were full sure they did 2,000 steps making breakfast and unloading the dishwasher.

Is that 10km there and 10km back? Because 10km would only be about 12k steps.

Most days I do try to get at least 10k steps, but don't always get it. Some days I get 3k and some I get 20+k .

Yes, some days it's a challenge. My target is 12000 per day. It's hard because I'm desk based. Weekends or when I'm at home doing house work it's usually about 16,000 no bothers. My house is large so going up and down the stairs is 100 steps. One side of the garden and back is 200 steps so I go over and back if it's the end of the evening and I didn't reach my target

My 5km run is about 5.5k steps. Yesterday’s short walk was 6.5km and came in at 8,600.
Last weekend’s longer walk was 25km and that was a little bit over 35,000 steps.
How are you getting 25-30,000 for 10km?

Rarely would I walk that far.

  1. I don't have the time.
  2. I am not fond of walking.

I work with horses and am on my feet all day every day and average anything between 16k and 26k. In fact today I’ve done over 30, I’m bloody knackered and I’m not moving until bed time.

Sadly I’m still fat as I like food too much 😂😂 do I deserve takeout now 😜

I was going to say yes of course and then checked my watch data and apparently I only did 8800 yesterday! The previous fortnight I’ve been over 15000 every day though. I run a minimum of 3 miles 6 times a week and have needy dogs to walk though so that makes it easier.

Report
Drivingdownthe101 · 22/06/2020 17:44

Just checked and have done 9700 so far today, that’s the school run (there and back) plus a walk with the toddler. Will take the dog for a walk later so will end up around 15000 I guess.
I’d say I average around 12000.
