It's approx 5 miles

If not, what are main reasons you can't/don't?

Nope. I'm lazy and can't be bothered.

Lockdownlooks · 21/06/2020 18:44

No. I have a disability so less. Maximum I can walk at one stretch would be 1 1/2 miles on the flat, less on an incline. I’m also doing less in lockdown as no commute. I’m better at the gym as a treadmill has an even surface

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/06/2020 18:45

On a normal work day, in actual work, I do about 18,000. Now I am WFH I manage 10,000 but it is an effort.

thisenglishlife · 21/06/2020 18:45

It's quite hard to do on a work day unless you're commuting via foot, walking the dogs or going for a walk that lasts around 100 minutes.

Nope. My work is static so no steps there. I cycle to work and hobbies. Other excercise I do is the gym and coaching a sports. That doesnt get my steps up and I really don't want to go to an additional walk.

GalesThisMorning · 21/06/2020 18:46

Hmmm. I do that or get close most days. I'm really surprised its 5 miles! It doesn't feel like much when its spread out over a day, going up and down stairs etc.

Popc0rn · 21/06/2020 18:46

I do between 20,000 and 25,000 steps atm at work. I'm off today and have done 704 steps so far according to my phone Blush. I've been on my exercise bike for 20 minutes though very slowly.

I read somewhere that 10,000 steps is a figure they pulled out of the air for advertising, and it's better for people's health to aim for at least 30 minutes of 'brisk' walking, as in getting slightly out of breath, a day instead.

SayakaMurata · 21/06/2020 18:47

Yes, always, I make sure that I do. In fact most days I do more, between 12,000 and 15,000.

On the days I work (2 a week) I arrive early and walk before work. On the other days I go for an hours walk in the morning.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 21/06/2020 18:47

Often I do. The school run and back twice is about 10,000 so then anything more would be a bonus.

And id do it if I was at work in the office.

evilharpy · 21/06/2020 18:52

Some days I don't. Generally because I've been working flat out, glued to a screen, and/or it's been pouring rain all day (or a combination of both).

On days I don't go out because of rain or whatever, even if my step count is low I'll have done something like a HIIT workout or spin class. I rarely end the day below 5,000 but if it's a low step count day I do make sure I get in some sort of activity.

Popc0rn · 21/06/2020 18:53

Michael Mosley: 'Forget walking 10,000 steps a day': www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-42864061

Jist is that it's actually healthier to aim for three brisk 10 minute walks a day (about 3000 steps) rather that hitting 10,000 steps each day.

CaptainMerica · 21/06/2020 18:53

No. I used to do that easily before DC, but it feels pretty impossible at the moment.

I'm currently starting work at 6am, then when i finish i am looking after DC while DH works. By the time he finishes it's time for me to go to bed. I wish the DC could come out for more of a walk, but my 3yo takes forever to walk anywhere, but is too old for a buggy.

In normal life I'm sitting in an office 8am to 5 most days, and driving 2 hours. I try to walk at lunchtime, but it doesn't add up to much.

I tend to manage a decent number at the weekend, when I get out for a run or a walk without the 3yo.

I used to walk 3 miles each way to work, and it was amazing.

CallmeAngelina · 21/06/2020 18:54

I generally do between 8 and 10K.

1066vegan · 21/06/2020 18:56

I do between 15 and 17,000 steps on an average workday, because I run to work and walk home. Usually at least 10,000 on a Saturday. Hardly anything most Sundays.

MagisCapulus · 21/06/2020 18:59

Average work day is apparently, according to my stepometer, 12k. Once school goes back it is an additional 4 miles twice a day.

Yes i realise I have mixed units!

whatswithtodaytoday · 21/06/2020 18:59

I used to most days, pre-child. Walk to the station and usually a walk at lunchtime, and always a long walk at the weekend.

Now during lockdown, lol no. I'm doing well if I get out for a walk on work days. I am planning to stay C25k though, mainly to get a bit of time to myself. I don't actually have time, but am going to do it anyway.

treenu · 21/06/2020 19:01

I tend to do 8000-12000 a day when at work. More on the days that I go for a run. Have really struggled being at home with the children as I've not managed the same amount.

Anyway this made me feel slightly better.

zingally · 21/06/2020 19:03

Not even close.
Even when I was at work, I wouldn't clock much more than 6k.

lozster · 21/06/2020 19:07

Fitbits seem to over-count steps Compared to phones. It’s very hard to get 10k steps if you are working and commute by car or are wfh - the time it takes is simply too much. If you want to count typing or knitting or styling your hair as steps then that’s fine as a point of comparison with your own daily average but not a valid comparison to the 10k target or other people
measuring in different ways.

Almostfifty · 21/06/2020 19:11

Since lockdown I'm averaging about 15k a day. I'm ensuring I move around a lot rather than sitting on my arse doing nowt.

BarbedBloom · 21/06/2020 19:17

I have rheumatoid arthritis and hypermobility, so if I walked five miles it would mean a few days in bed afterwards

Hollywhiskey · 21/06/2020 19:20

Yes, always. I even did 10k steps the day I had my youngest (very straightforward birth). I have a sedentary job so I make walking part of my commute by getting off the train a couple of stops early or walking into town after work. I always walk for my full lunch hour and run a couple of times a week. On lockdown I'm on maternity leave so I walk normally 20k steps a day while the kids sleep.

MrsMcCarthysfamousScones · 21/06/2020 19:20

I used to regularly run/walk way more.
Now with CFS, fibromyalgia & arthritis there is no way I can walk more than 2 miles & that is very infrequently.

OwlBeThere · 21/06/2020 19:22

No. Mostly because I have CFS/Fibromyalgia and MS.

GuppytheCat · 21/06/2020 19:22

5 miles at 10000 steps? Good grief, how long are your legs?

5 miles / 8 km is about 14000 steps for me.
