It's approx 5 miles

If not, what are main reasons you can't/don't?

No. I just can’t fit it in, as much as I’d like to!

Before lockdown, with school run, racing between meetings etc. I’d clock it up without thinking. Now I have to set out to go for a long walk or a jog, which is tricky as we’re flat out WFH, home schooling, and helping shielding relatives with their medication (I have to drive there). Now it’s around 8,000. It’s so depressing and I’m having to seriously watch what I eat even though I try and do a 30 min HIIT.

Nope. I do about 5-7k on average. I have arthritis in my back so I can't walk for miles on end without paying for it afterwards!

I do walk the dog daily but only for a couple of miles.

Most days I'm slightly over, at about 1200-14000. However, I have mild CFS/ME, so if I walk 10,000 steps all at once on a proper walk, I'm not fit for much more after that. I'd expect to be on the sofa for at least a few hours.

I take ds2 for a walk, most days. I walk to the supermarket.

But I have HMS so don't walk as far as normal when something hurts too much, I don't walk far when it's hot because the heat makes me dizzy and nauseous and I barely walk anywhere when it's frosty because it really hurts my hips and back if I slip and my balance is dreadful.

@GuppytheCat

5 miles at 10000 steps? Good grief, how long are your legs?

5 miles / 8 km is about 14000 steps for me.

Not since lock down! When at work properly I average between 12000 and 15000 depending on whether I'm on lunch duty (teacher) or not. Since lockdown started I'm lucky if I get about 3500 without really trying. ON the days I've been into work with keyworkers children then I getup to about 7000 as there is no duty, no walking to different rooms and less walking around the classroom.

I'm going to make a conscious effort to increase this but I think I'm still suffering from some post-viral lurgy. I'm feeling exhausted most of the time at the moment.

No. If I concentrate on it then I can do 9000 steps in a day. Most days it's more like 2000. Mostly I don't have time to exercise much after I've done homeschooling and the housework, cooking, putting dc to bed etc.

Yes. Pre-lockdown it's 3km to work each way. I usually hit 20k steps.

During lockdown I'm WFH and getting our for a couple of walks and a run every day. Usually 13k.
Did 23k yesterday walking each child separately.

In normal times yes, but not during lockdown. I've been making a conscious effort to hit the "magic" 10,000 last couple weeks in lockdown and it's really quite difficult. Went for a fast paced walk the other day and it took me around 90mins to walk 7,500 steps

Pre lock down yes on a work day just walking to/from car park to work, walking around office and a lunch time walk. Weekend would be long walk somewhere plus bits of shopping pottering etc.

Since lockdown I have been wfh and it's been manic so only when I make a big effort otherwise I'm hideously sedentary. I was running most days so did manage it but over did it and hurt my hip. Now we try and go for an hour or so maybe 3/4 times a week and/or I do a hiit or some other kind of exercise session. This last week when it's been raining I've done f all.

6 days a week I do well over 10000.
Days I am at home the School/nursery run is 18000 alone.
Work day I’m on my feet all day so average about 12000.
Sunday’s I am normally on under 2000!

I really struggled while on furlough and put on a fair bit of weight. Hoping it goes now I’m back running around.

Pre-lockdown: between 12k and 16k steps a day. Used to do the school run twice a day (4 miles total), plus run/exercise and work.

Now...well, there's no school run as such. Just Thursday and Friday mornings with DS coming home on his own now (he's Y6). Shortly he'll be going in on his own too.

I'm WFH, so basically at the dining table full time. Averaging around 6k steps a day now. I try to get some exercise but lack the motivation - at least with the school run I had little choice.

My, personally set, target is 5,000. I occasionally do 10,000 but would be setting myself up to fail if I had that as a target. As it is I don't always achieve 5,000 but I do about half the time and it does work as an incentive.

I am also 65 and I read somewhere that although 10,000 was great, for my age it was diminishing returns after 4,000.

I think the important thing is to push yourself a little more than you want to but set yourself an achievable target.

Most days, yes. I did before lockdown as well. I walk a lot, and run 3-4 times a week, so that helps.

Yes, at least 10k steps, some days closer to 15k.
I have an energetic dog.
10k is 4.25 miles for me.

My step count really varies day to day - anything between 5000 and 26000. When we were allowed to go clubbing and to gigs I could easily do 20000 just dancing! At the moment I do well over 10000 on the days I go running but there isn't much time to fit exercise in around work (desk job)

I think my Fitbit must get very confused trying to set my daily step goal Grin

I walk 5000 to 6000 on a normal day. Due to lockdowb that went down to 1000 to 2000 so I have started going a 30 min walk with the children then an 60min walk myself every day and get 12000- 14000 most days.
Also break from my family motivates me. Love them dearly but it is a lot of time together.

When I'm at work, yes..

Report
Alwayslearningthings · 21/06/2020 19:49

Before lockdown yes, during it no. When I go back to work I’ll average 12,000 4 days a week, including before and after work, as I walk around all day and am constantly up and down the stairs.
We do walking on the weekends as a family, but as the children are quite small I probably only get about 9000 roughly each day.

Usually, yes, when I'm at work. I'm a teacher and tend to do a lot of wandering around anyway. I've got my class back from tomorrow and have put a half hour walk on the timetable after lunch every day. Some of my kids haven't moved much at all during the past few months.
I'm planning on spending every afternoon bar one outside with them in the weeks leading up to the holidays. We are turning a part of our school field into a river. Should clock up a few steps this way. Grin

I did pre lockdown save on my 1 day a week working from home. Now I'm working from home all the time so have only made 10k about once a month 🤷‍♀️ don't even have the school run now so lockdown has been terrible for my fitness and health.

I walk down the garden and talk to (look after) the plants. Then I go back in the house and read. On a good day I will sit at the garden table and read out there.
There are no rules, who the heck invented these 10k steps anyway.
Command and control. I observe neither. so there.
Free spirit and all that. lol.
