It's approx 5 miles

If not, what are main reasons you can't/don't?

During lockdown i had to make a conscious effort but only done 9k-11k.

Now im back at work and walking there and back, on feet at work all day then spending the evening chasing and sorting toddler DS, im doing more like 19k which is more than pre lockdown due to walking to and from work.

Oh god, yes! Often over double that. I'm a sahm to a toddler and I do everything (apart from family days out) on foot & am also doing C25K.

I do 4 days a week about 14,000 steps and the rest about 3,000. Plus HIIT training.

So it is a contest now is it? I feel for for our disabled friends who will never be able to compete with the thousands of steps.

Get a life. I am so sure that ordinary life for many would exceed the obligatory number of steps in a day, but unless you have your trainers on and are doing a certain path forget it. Such control and messages might indeed put many off.

Almost always - unless I've been cycling instead of walking. Today I've done only 8,500, so this is making put my shoes on! (I did swim for 20 mins as well, so I've had enough exercise, but I don't like to finish a day on less than 10,000. Often do 15-20 though.

@saltycat to follow your logic, your post about talking to the plants in your garden was extremely tactless, considering how many people live in flats.

More like 20k plus steps on my counter every day. It takes a lot of time & I like being out a lot. Me & one of my teens take turns dragging each other out.

Somehow my fitbit counts some of my cycling as 'steps'. I don't know what formula the fitbit uses to do that.

Since lockdown yes but that is because we have made the effort to do a walk every day. Before lockdown I was sat at my desk all day and probably did 3-5,000. Don’t want to go back to that. I also do HIIT at least 5 days a week now 😊

No, I barely manage half because I am sat at a desk. My fitbit vibrates if I sit too long though and I get up for a stroll to the printer. Did 8000 today though.

Yes, at least that every day.

At the start of lockdown I started wearing my Fitbit and was stunned how little walking I did! To get 10,000 I need to go out for an hours walk.

didn't used to but I am now ,well at least four days ,due to walking to and from work ,sometimes I do more days if I can motivate the kids out for a walk

Hmm I wonder if my Garmin underestimates of other people lie tbh. Even on a fairly active day where I run 5 miles, and take the toddler out for a couple of walks, I do well to reach 13k. On work days (if I don’t run) I might manage 5k if I’m lucky and I still feel like I barely sit down.

Foot picture was a step calculator for a 5'4" woman

The steps recorded by a fitness device though will not just be counting the full stride length of focused walking which that was, lots of the steps will not be full strides - and of course step counters are hugely variable anyway.

And 10,000 is meaningless (and even as you realise the difference between a 5' woman and a 6' woman in stride length is significant, yet the energy cost is by weight and distance rather than stride with the efficiency not making huge odds.

For an individual, relative numbers as they change at different time and as a motivator are good, but don't compare, there's nothing really there to compare.

Before lockdown yes but now, not a chance. But I either run or cycle nearly every day so I do get exercise, just not necessarily that many steps.

Before lockdown my average was about 17,000 a day. While DH was on furlough it went up but since he started back at work it's dropped right off. Younger DC are a bit fed up of our local walks so reluctant to go and I don't have the motivation to go by myself in the evenings.

To get 10,000 I need to go out for an hours walk

I went for a walk with my husband today for 50 mins and did 6000 steps. And I think I take quite small steps so it must be really difficult for a tall person with long legs and a long stride.

Going out for a walk isn't very attractive either because there are too many people out, too many dogs off lead, too many people walking in fairly large groups and too much having to cross the road every few seconds. Please can everyone go back to work soon.

Before lockdown yes, easily. I would say the average weekday then was about 12k. Since lockdown, definitely not. I’m lucky to get 5k most days.

Before lockdown I averaged 10 - 12k a day.

Since lockdown - erm - maybe 3-4k a day which is shameful (and probably why I've put on half a stone).
