Would you go abroad by plane over the summer?

Assuming that the government will do yet another U-turn over travel quarantine on return to the UK, would you get a flight to say, Portugal for a holiday over the summer? I'm just curious how many would etc.

Yes - we have an apartment in Majorca and are going in August assuming the foreign office raise the ‘only essential overseas travel’ restriction. The large communal pool is permitted to be used but at 40% capacity, so our community president is managing that in terms of who will be there/has bookings etc. I’m expecting it to be reasonably quiet. Restaurants are open, have to wear masks in shops and on public transport. I want some sun and to check on things out there. We need a break from the Groundhog Day that is WFH/homeschooling.

No. But only becuase a holiday with social distancing restrictions still in place sounds depressing. I'd be quite happy getting on plane but if it's to go somewhere where I can't relax and visit museums and pop into cafes etc then I don't see the point.

Yes. We have a flight booked and will definitely use it if we can.

Yes - if we could get travel insurance that would cover Covid 19.

PIL live in Spain and we haven't see them in months.

Yes, definitely! Modern aircraft have filters on them so air quality isn't actually as big a problem as many think. Also socially distance holidays sound great - quiet pools, quiet restaurants plus relief from the complete and utter mind numbing boredom of lockdown / home schooling!

Supposed to be going with 2 friends to Seville in August. One doesn't want to go. The other wants to. I don't mind. We will try self catering apartments rather than a room only hotel.

Definitely not.

No, the idea of the airport and plane is just too unpleasant. And like other people have said, I go on holiday to be spontaneous - I don't want to have to plan everything, I like wandering past a restaurant and thinking 'ooh that looks nice', or popping into an art gallery or museum because we're in the area. If everything has to be pre-booked to me its not a holiday. And, being furloughed, i've spent quite enough time lately sitting on my arse reading - I want to go out and do things!

No plans to travel by plane till 2021.
Holidaying at home.
My teen may be going abroad later this summer on an exchange trip.

To add- the holiday we have planned is hiking and lots of outdoor stuff.
Not sure i'd bother if it was anything indoorsy or that required booking for slots and lots of queueing for things.

Probably not - just worried about the hassle, not worried about getting ill.

I would. Masks provided as you board, sanitiser freely available, Temperature checks at each end. no way you can socially distance on a plane, but I don’t think it’s a terrible risk at all.

If you are prepared to go, why?? I would love to know. Is it just because you are bored and fed up or do you honestly think it is safe. I would love nothing more than to fly far away but the things stopping me are:

  1. lack of complete cover for travel insurance. I do not have the money to cover intensive care cost of months and months if one of us got ill, and certainly would not want to be in the grim state hospitals of most european hospitals bar France.

  2. It isn't just the recycled air, but the touching of seats, seatbelts, so many other people being so close on the flight you only need one infected person and that is around 20 people at least just around them that would be ill in that close indoor proximity.

  3. Friend is a covid doctor and is not going away anywhere, the memories are too fresh from the last few months I guess with the patients suffering so much, even those that made it. They travel all the time usually.

  4. I won't relax worrying about the hotels, the restaurants, the other guests. Basically everything and everywhere we go will feel like another risk.

  5. There seems to be lots of big outbreaks. Portugal and Germany being the latest ones. I don't want to be stranded in a lockdown far from home.

  6. I can't think of anything worse than my children, dh or I being seriously/critically ill overseas. It is an horrendous experience even at home, without the thought of being there and not being able to understand a word of what is going on, and being cut off from everything and isolated. I am truly really scared of that happening, and what would happen to our dc etc if it went on for months.

So I just can not do it, but I would love for others to outline why they feel these points do not apply or are unworried by this.

Yep, we'll be going away in August, Portugal probs, just waiting until closer to the time to book it.

I think we need to keep the aviation industry going otherwise we run the risk of it having such serious financial difficulties that flights either become extortionately expensive or some smaller airports close.

Also don't think all of this stress is worth it just for a holiday tbh

Yep. Going to the Algarve in September. Staying with FIL who lives there so no worries about hotel issues. Restaurants there will be open. Can't wait.

Pigeon999 I am so surprised that you are saying it's not safe. Aren't you constantly advocating for schools to open with zero social distancing ASAP?

Report
GreenTulips · 21/06/2020 17:02

I’d also worry about the influx of people and the hospitals not coping

Plus no reliable track and trace system in place if someone was ill on the plane etc

Would I go tomorrow? Yes.
Will I book anything? No because I thought insurance taken now would not cover cancellation due to Covid 19.

Report
pigeon999 · 21/06/2020 17:05

Yes poo I am keen to get the schools open, because it is about risk, and there is very little risk to children (and to teachers) in school. However an enclosed, warm indoor aircraft is going to carry higher risk, ditto airports and coaches that transport passengers to and from terminals. I should think you can evaluate risk with your own life, and decide what is the right thing to do for your family, and that is what I have done. I am however interested in those that think it is safe to fly. Maybe I am missing something?

Yes can’t wait. Early July flights booked. I am confident in air filtration on board the only issue would be if you were sitting very close to someone who had the virus. Hopefully that’s not the case. We are going to spain which is our second home. Was once our first home so we don’t have hotels etc and have lots of friends there and regular haunts. Just hope the flight isn’t cancelled.
