Would you go abroad by plane over the summer?

Assuming that the government will do yet another U-turn over travel quarantine on return to the UK, would you get a flight to say, Portugal for a holiday over the summer? I'm just curious how many would etc.

We're due to go to Spain on July 11th. It hasn't been cancelled. So if FCO guidance allows, I think we'll be going. It's a villa with a pool so hopefully will be OK. Thr holiday company said easyjet would have cancelled the flights by now if they were going to cancel them. If they don't cancel the flights then i assume we can't claim on the insurance.

I’m so torn on this.

We have an all inclusive 10 days at a ‘luxury’ family resort booked for September in Portugal. I’m bloody desperate for a holiday but even if things have improved by then I just don’t think I’ll be able to relax and enjoy it. The flight, the airport, the transfer and then the densely packed resort - all the kids activities and restaurants etc wouldn’t be much fun if social distancing (assuming they’re even open) and congregating with a load of other Brits isn’t going to be ideal. It will probably just be massively un-relaxing especially as we have 2 toddlers so can’t rely on them to be careful.

It feels like such a shame as I’ve been clinging onto it as something to look forward to but even aside from the risks of actually catching the damn thing it just doesn’t sound like it’ll be much fun 😞

We’re probably going to try to postpone the booking to next year but if we’re ‘allowed’ to travel I suspect they won’t offer refunds and nor will insurance cover it - and no doubt next year will be massively booked up as everyone will want to get away when this is over.

Bloody depressing really

Yes definitely - I’m prepared to take a risk for a get away in the sun
Not going for a few months yet so hoping risk will decrease further by then
I should have been going away next week

I love going abroad but my answer for this year and possibly next is a definite no.

No. I'm not willing to risk my hard earned money to be a post lockdown experiment so have rebooked for next year. I also do not want to be at the mercy of another country's lockdown, remembering how hard and fast this happened in European countries with just a small number of cases.

For all those who are hoping to travel, have you managed to obtain travel insurance that will cover COVID for medical and travel disruption? A work colleague has made enquires and says it's too expensive so is going to rely on her EHIC and I was a bit Hmm

I’d like to go to the Uk in Sept to see my family but it depends how the country is doing in terms of reopening safely.

It’ll be a year since I’ve seen my parents and 2 years since I’ve seen my siblings and their families. I don’t need restaurants etc to be open but I don’t want to arrive in the middle of an outbreak either.

I do have health insurance that would fully cover any medical costs so not worried so much about that aspect.

@VeryQuaintIrene so sorry for your loss, my condolences to you. Hope your trip is as stress free as possible under the circumstances.

No chance.

Even going to Asda for bread and milk pisses me off with the queuing outside, one way system, total awkwardness if you accidentally come close to another person.

I can’t even imagine how awful and stressful that would be at an airport! And then possibly the same in another country, activities off, high chance of things being closed.

Pigeon999 I agree with you re planes - but teachers are going to be stuck in enclosed spaces for hours too with poor ventilation. Yes, we will go outside, but the majority of the time, inside I'm terribly ventilated classes.

I’m half-hoping that mine will be cancelled. It wouldn’t be much of a holiday with queues and bookings and masks, and the worry of getting locked down or unwell overseas would be ever-present.

I think it’s been rushed through (lifting of travel ban by Spain etc) and that there’ll be unpleasant repercussions. It’s been too fast. And I say that as someone who really wants the economy to get going again!

We were going to meet a friend & family in Italy for 2 wks who we haven't seen for 15yrs. Friend is in a country where borders are going to stay closed for the foreseeable so their European tour is cancelled so we had to cancel our villa. 3 of our family need passports renewed before we can fly & passport office said emergency passports only. So if FO advice changes, which seems v likely now then we'll be 6 return flights out of pocket 🙁. We're not desperate to go, not really through fear of the virus, but restrictions / chance of local outbreak affecting plans once there. Happy to holiday in the UK but sounds like that's going to be rather oversubscribed this year!

Hoping to head to turkey in around 3 weeks time with luck, I won’t have seen my fiancé for 4.5 months by then

I’m different in the sense that I really couldn’t care less if I can’t visit bars, restaurants or the beach while I’m there - in fact I’d happily never leave the house if it meant i could see him again 😞

In principle, depending on what's happening the other end, yes.

I'm going to be back travelling for work as soon as that's possible, anyway. I wouldn't want to be unable to access a pool or beach on holiday but if those restrictions aren't awful I'm not worried about picking up Covid from a plane (90% sure we've had it anyway).

Definitely have a watching brief for the end of the summer given we've cancelled one holiday already. May Eurostar somewhere, not fly though, as have vouchers.

She's convinced herself that schools are absolutely safe because it suits her to.

What happens with test and trace (or the equivalent) if you are on holiday? What happens if you are picked up as a contact with someone who tests positive eg at a restaurant, how would you self isolate, and what if that takes you over the end of your holiday?

No way. The project of several hours on a plane wearing a mask horrifies me. Half an hour at the optician wearing one was quite enough.

Nope. 6 months ago where we are now would have seemed ridiculous, who knows where we will be in 6 months time. Could be fab or even worse. I Would not feel safe either health wise or financially.

Last week I booked some flights to Spain. They were very cheap so I decided to book them and hope that it is possible to go. The flights are now four times the price.

I've booked the hotel and it's fully refundable until 24 hours before. They will be operating at 50% capacity and that might explain why the price is very high.

I won't go if I think it's too risky or if FCO advice doesn't change.

Have Portugal booked for August 11th.... the flights are now “sold out” With EasyJet (ie likely to be cancelled)

Kids passports need renewing as they expired in March so didn’t get a chance to do that.

Tbh it all sounds like a huge faff, With all the distancing rules/mask wearing etc...

Just a shame EasyJet won’t release up til aug21 so re booking is not easy at this point.

Could be wrong but I’m pretty sure Pigeon999 was very positive about getting out to shopping centres too and getting back to normal , along with schools going back ( I don’t disagree) but to then slate holidaying seems a bit like just picking the bits that suit your book.
