AIBU To ask my OH not to Shoutsneeze?

(This is about the everyday cold in happier times, obvs).

I can produce a reasonably low decibel constrained "a-pfna", considerate to the eardrums of those nearby, not disturbing a cinema or theatre audience, not causing a cyclist to wobble, etc.

So why does he think "AAAAHHHH - HEURGGGGHHH" registering on the Richter earthquake scale with full vocal projection including right in my ear when I am nearly asleep is acceptable?

And why does he get annoyed when asked to modulate his performance?

AIBU?

Omg this post made me howl and I can totally relate, I put it down to my husband being a drama queen

ravenmum · 19/06/2020 13:24

Well, Francis Bacon is the first on this thread to provide any actual tips Grin

Chocolatefixeseverything · 19/06/2020 13:25

I am not a shouty sneezer but there is a level.of anti social volume. I have in the past tried to minimise that volume the resulting pressure caused me to fart incredibly loudly, not ideal as I was in a quiet area hense trying to sneeze discreetly.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 19/06/2020 13:27

Do the same back to him. In fact, make it your mission in life to sneeze louder than he does

thenightsky · 19/06/2020 13:27

DH shout-sneezes and it shakes the room. He claims he cannot control it and gets all huffy when I jump out of my skin and say FFS.

However, I know he can control it because I've seen him do so during conference calls Angry

Ooh count me in 👋

My dh is a shout sneezer, when the cats are sound asleep and he makes the overdramatic AAAAACCCCCCCCCHHOOOOOOoooooo, I swear you have accelerating cats all over the place. Sometimes it feels like whatever is placed on the table is actually moving and the rest of the family are left with ringing eardrums Sad. Funnily it's him who has the tinnitus.

You don't have to use your vocal cords to sneeze, practice.

I crush my sneezes, maybe not good for you, but someone has to counterbalance dh, to make the universe turn the right way round Grin.

SciFiScream · 19/06/2020 13:54

My DH is a performance sneezer. He shoots CHOOOO at the end.
My DD is also a performance sneezer.

I sneeze a lot and have trained myself to be as quiet as I can but I do find what happens is if I do several sneezes in a row (sometimes up to 15) the last few sneezes are louder and I really can't control it.

Since I started gently teasing my DH about his performance sneezing he hasn't done it again.

SerenDippitty · 19/06/2020 13:55

Can anyone actually not close their eyes while sneezing? My mum used to tell me off for sneezing while driving.

PaperMonster · 19/06/2020 13:57

Hello, my sneezes are more like screams. My mum’s have long been like this and mine have started this way now I’m older. No way I can control it!

giantangryrooster · 19/06/2020 13:58

I think, I read somewhere that it is physically impossible to have your eyes open when sneezing. I hate it when driving.

Your mouth though can be closed Wink.

CoronaIsComing · 19/06/2020 14:00

Oh but a shoutsneeze is sooo much more satisfying 😂

SciFiScream · 19/06/2020 14:02

The Billy Connelly sketch about sneezing when you drive has me in stitches. I must find it and share.

CrowleysBentley · 19/06/2020 14:06

I'm a shoutsneezer. I have dodgy sinuses and trying to sneeze quietly fucking kills my face so I will continue to sneeze in a non painful way. My kids very much enjoy taking the piss out of my sneezes too.

Cosmos45 · 19/06/2020 14:08

My neighbour is a "performance" sneezer and it resulted in us having the most almighty row over it on bank holiday Monday. This was along with bellowing at the top of his voice, thrashing sports cars up and down the road and playing loud music but the sneezing and shouting with it really used to get on my nerves! funnily enough he doesn't do it anymore

SecretWitch · 19/06/2020 14:14

A got a deep scratch from a lap sleeping cat who panicked after my husband shout sneezed. I wanted to kick him in the shins.

Villanemme · 19/06/2020 14:16

I'm always worried that in court I will have to say yes, it was his sneezing that caused me to stab him multiple times and they will not believe me.

Villanemme · 19/06/2020 14:18

Interestingly DP's sneeze DOES actually sound like someone's stabbed him unexpectedly.

ScrambledSmegs · 19/06/2020 14:20

DH is a shoutsneezer. I started shouting back at him several years ago to relieve my feelings about it, and now our DC do it too. We always try to be louder and more elaborate than the original.

DH: AAAARGHHAAAH
Me and kids : AAAAAAAAARGHOOOOAH

He's recently started just sneezing without the shout, which is oddly disappointing.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 19/06/2020 14:30

I have the photic sneeze reflex ( thanks Mum!) and combined with hayfever and being a florist by trade I usually sneeze at least twice a week 10-15 times one straight after the other.

I can only speak for myself but it is involuntary, the speed that they come out at at the sheer number of them in a row is exhausting.

I also piss myself if I try and keep them in, so yeah- no thanks.

HonneyBea · 19/06/2020 14:43

I'm a shoutsneezer. If I have a sneezing bout, I try to make them all as different and loud as possible. I sometimes but song lyrics at the end.
My H and DC's think I'm an annoying weirdo but I really don't care haha

InYerFace · 19/06/2020 14:49

Love shoutsneezer! DH is a shoutyawner and I find it so incredibly irritating.

JRUIN · 19/06/2020 15:02

I'm a loud sneezer and would love to be able to do a tiny hiccup of a sneeze like some people do, but just can't. Don't nag the poor sod for something he can't help.

Snowdown24 · 19/06/2020 15:14

I shout sneeze, just got the baby to sleep once and felt a sneeze coming on whilst I was lowering her into her cot- OMG the most painful shooting pain flew down my back to my shoulder blade and I couldn’t lift her for a week due to the pain!!! Last time I ever do that because it wasn’t worth it.
