AIBU To ask my OH not to Shoutsneeze?

(This is about the everyday cold in happier times, obvs).

I can produce a reasonably low decibel constrained "a-pfna", considerate to the eardrums of those nearby, not disturbing a cinema or theatre audience, not causing a cyclist to wobble, etc.

So why does he think "AAAAHHHH - HEURGGGGHHH" registering on the Richter earthquake scale with full vocal projection including right in my ear when I am nearly asleep is acceptable?

And why does he get annoyed when asked to modulate his performance?

AIBU?

He can put his hand over his mouth and nose like the rest of us with embarrassingly loud sneezes.

Scratch that, his elbow.

But yeah it's not controllable in any way

VelvetSoft · 19/06/2020 10:32

I can (and do) smother an every day or cold type sneeze, but there's absolutely nothing I can do for my hayfever sneezes. They take me pretty much unawares and are always forceful. There's genuinely nothing I can do about it. I do annoy myself if that's any consolation? Grin

Hushabusha · 19/06/2020 10:36

Would he sneeze like that at an interview? Or a funeral? Or if hiding a la Jurassic Park from a velociraptor? Nope. So he can control it.

My DH used to do the most disgusting shout belches. He said he couldn't help it. I asked him the above questions. Thankfully he realized the error of his ways and we are still married.

speakout · 19/06/2020 10:36

You have my sympathies OP.

My mother ( who lives with us) does this. It bugs the hell out of me.

Before anyoe suggests this in uncontrollale doesn't know a shoutsneezer ( great term btw)

I totally get that stifling a sneeze is unhealthy, can cause damage etc, a normal sneeze I can cope with, but shout sneezers are attention seeking.

My mother's sneeze always ends with a loud "CHA", bringing her local chords and voice into play at top volume leaving no one in doubt in the whole street that she has sneezed.

I have actually tried shoutsneezing- alone in my car- to see if it can be done, and I found it easy.

I see it as three types of sneezing.

  1. Stifled sneezing- which is done in an emergency only - funerals or when tying not to wake a baby. But I agree it is unhealthy.
  1. Normal sneezing.
  1. Shoutsneezing- done by individals seeking attention.

Shoutsneezing is avoidable.

This thread has me really laughing 😂😂
I too am a loud sneezer, after stifling one and pulling a muscle in my side i now just let them out. The kids regularly jump out of their skin. I'm convinced an explosive sneeze made my waters break with my youngest.

SerenDippitty · 19/06/2020 10:39

However, I am the person who also didn’t notice that the whole office had left for a staff meeting because I was so engrossed In something. I just looked up eventually and was like ‘where’s everyone gone?’ (60 people)

This would happen to me. It can be a symptom of ADHD which I suspect I have. It’s called hyperfocus.

Lsquiggles · 19/06/2020 10:39

My dad and my partner do this, it gives me the rage Angry

BrowncoatWaffles · 19/06/2020 10:40

YANBU. I have a DH who does this and it is one of the things that drives me nuts about him (although thankfully it’s a pretty short list).

I got him this card for our anniversary it’s such a thing.

Marmite27 · 19/06/2020 10:41

Mine suppressed every sneeze then moans it hurts. Don’t fucking do it then, sneeze like a normal person Angry

myBumJuiceSmellsLikeRoses · 19/06/2020 10:41

I tell you what's worse. My OH loud burps words.
Well, one word.
EVERY TIME has does a loud burp it's underlined by the word "bollocks".

Now that IS avoidable. The only saviour is that he only does it when it's just 2 of us in the house.

AhBallix · 19/06/2020 10:43

My mum shouts AWAAAH-HOO! It used to make us laugh when we were kids and kind of annoy us too.

DP is in a league of his own. His sneeze is an earth shattering yell - the sort that would come out if you dropped a lump hammer on your foot - and it makes me jump every single time. I absolutely hate it. I haven't asked him to rein it in as I don't think he would, even if he could. He seems quite proud of it.

How is having a severely deviated septum attention seeking?

campion · 19/06/2020 10:54

DH does this and it's a regular bone of contention. Says he can't help it and I should be more sympatheticHmm

That's a good point @Hushabusha about being able to control it when you really have to. I'll be putting it to him.

And people who sneeze into their hands; just don't!

Casschops · 19/06/2020 10:54

It drove me mad especially when out son was a tiny baby. I think peolple can help it its just attention seeking.

Graciebobcat · 19/06/2020 11:00

So annoying. Also DH trumpets like a bull elephant when he blows his nose. I'm sure it's unnecessary, and possibly harmful (to him, not to mention my eardrums) to blow your nose so hard.

AJPTaylor · 19/06/2020 11:02

I had a colleague like this. Claimed she couldn't help it. Could just be coincidental that she was attention seeking in every other way I suppose.

THat has nothing to do with your vocal chords.

SerenDippitty · 19/06/2020 11:11

I have found it possible to defer a sneeze by tightly squeezing my nose - the urge passes - but it will return once I let go.

I have to sneeze with my mouth open, it is physically impossible to do that silently. A mouth open with relaxed vocal cords makes an ‘ahhh’ sound.

Sometimes if I push firmly on my philtrum I can buy enough time to go to the loo/another room to sneeze. In hayfever season however no chance.

SimonJT

Everyone sneezes with an open mouth.

You can choose to dramatise the situation or not.

Lots of people sneeze with their mouth shut, my boyfriend is one of them.

A vocal cord in a relaxed state produces an ‘ahh’ sound, it also produces that sound with a relaxed tongue and open lips. I shall tell the ENT clinic that they’re wrong.

Deadringer · 19/06/2020 11:28

Most of the time i can control my sneezes, they are nearly always loud but i can least contain them up to a point, but sometimes i get a sudden one that i am unprepared for and it comes out as a scream. I frighten myself sometimes. Yabu

lyralalala · 19/06/2020 11:36

I’m a loud and repetitive sneezer. The only thing I can do is say “I’m going to sneeze” to warn my family, or when my kids are asleep try and smother the sound with a blanket or pillow.

The first time I tried to stop it I pulled/tore something in my neck and couldn’t turn my head for a week, plus had a 40 minute nose bleed. The last time, at a funeral, I ended up with an hour long nose bleed and a sore back for days. The funeral one was despite doubling up on hay fever meds.

Some of us just can’t help it. I hate it. I used to get picked on at school for it. If I could change it I would.

MustGetOutofBed · 19/06/2020 11:37

Sometimes you can control a sneeze, bit not always. I remember trying to control a sneeze in work one day and something popped in my ears - my hearing was kind of muffled for a while (not long though, so obviously nothing broke!)
Other times at home my sneezes can be so high pitched that the glasses ping!

In saying all that, my DH's sneezes drive me mad because he can't do it once, or when twice! Must be at least 9 in a row 😖
