AIBU To ask my OH not to Shoutsneeze?

(This is about the everyday cold in happier times, obvs).

I can produce a reasonably low decibel constrained "a-pfna", considerate to the eardrums of those nearby, not disturbing a cinema or theatre audience, not causing a cyclist to wobble, etc.

So why does he think "AAAAHHHH - HEURGGGGHHH" registering on the Richter earthquake scale with full vocal projection including right in my ear when I am nearly asleep is acceptable?

And why does he get annoyed when asked to modulate his performance?

AIBU?

*or even twice!

Allnamesaregone · 19/06/2020 11:41

My DH does this too! He use his vocal chords for sneezing and it’s so loud and unnecessary’

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 19/06/2020 11:42

My df does this wakes the living dead and the dog up. His sneezes are sooo loud. Yanbu

BogRollBOGOF · 19/06/2020 11:42

The question is can/ does the person amend it for different situations.

My sneezes and hiccips are loud but there is only one setting. Hiccups especially annoying due to the repitition. If I could hiccup daintily without rocking my while body making my muscles ache, I would. It's not fun or pleasant!

Carandi · 19/06/2020 11:47

My husband shoutsneezes sometimes and then has the cheek to shout out "Bless me, fuck you!" 🤭

Poppyismyfavourite · 19/06/2020 11:48

Haha my dad has done this for at least 30 years, so not sure there's much hope for change. My mum hates it, and tells him so often, so i think if he could have changed, he would have done so by now!

Yeahnahmum · 19/06/2020 11:51

I shoutsneeze. And when I do I do it like 5 /6 times in a row. My kids and husband thinks it is weird. And funny. I feel like I can't control it. Otherwise my eardrums hurt like hell. I don't do it for fun or laughs or attention. Heck it is embarrassing hahaha but Uhm yeah. It is how I sneeze. Blush

jebthesheep · 19/06/2020 12:01

Lyralalala and all the others who can’t help it - I believe you. My Dc and Dh both have this problem and both hate it ( DH sensitive to noise, DC picked on ) both highly motivated to stop it and yet unable to - not attention seeking at all - introverts, would rather crawl into a hole that have people looking at them - I, on the other hand can stifle easily, painlessly and am rarely caught out by a sneaky one.
I also get a flare of annoyance when my family make me jump. I can stifle that but with a bit more effort than a sneeze.
I think the only way you can tell, is if you know the shouty sneezer well enough. Have a heart though - I’m not an attention seeking shouty sneeze denier, but do please accept that there are some who would love to stop but can’t manage it. It’s rotten to be made an example of for something you can’t help.

ravenmum · 19/06/2020 12:17

I can pop my own ears if there's pressure in them, e.g. on a plane.
But I don't roll my eyes at people who can't do it, and tell me that their ears hurt. I don't tell them that of course they can pop their own ears, because I can.

In humans, sneezing involves the vocal cords:
“Just before you sneeze, pressure builds up in your chest as your chest muscles compress your lungs, and your vocal cords close,” says Dr. Mynes. “When your vocal cords suddenly open again, air is driven up your respiratory tract and through your nose at a high speed. Your eyes shut and your diaphragm moves upward as your chest muscles contract, releasing air from your lungs.”

Evidently, some people have developed a means of controlling it differently, presumably as children. But as others have mentioned, it can actually cause damage.

I can try to stop a sneeze, if I know I'm going to disturb someone, but what happens instead is that I keep my mouth shut and snot shoots out of my nose, and my eyes water like mad. So if I do not have a tissue on me, I prefer to sneeze at my natural volume into my elbow.

Thelnebriati · 19/06/2020 12:19

Some people might exaggerate for attention, but YABU to think that people can reduce the amount of noise they make when they sneeze.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 19/06/2020 12:28

DH's shout sneezes have made me bitter and in the heat of the moment I vehemently believe that people CAN control their sneeze volume and those who shout are just trying to terrify the rear of us. However, after the fact and once I've managed to convince the dogs comes out of hiding, I calm down and agree that some people probably can't control it, but some people definitely do it on purpose.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 19/06/2020 12:28

*rest of us. What a typo!

ravenmum · 19/06/2020 12:30

What is it, exactly, that you do when you make an actual kitten sneeze? What are you shutting? Where does the air go? Why isn't your entire face screwed up? Question upon question.

NameChange84 · 19/06/2020 12:32

YADNBU

I’ve got a heart problem and my Dad has genuinely set my heart off rhythm a few times from his sneezes. He’s ridiculously loud and it makes me startle. Everyone is shocked when he sneezes and comments on it but he makes no attempt to be quiet.

I can make a noise when I sneeze or...I can just shut my God Damned Mouth like a decent human being. Saves spraying all the disgusting germs about everywhere too.

NameChange84 · 19/06/2020 12:36

Just remembered after my Dad sneezed once many years ago the family’s new kitten jumped out her skin, ran behind the sofa and pooed everywhere. That’s how bad a shout sneezer he is.

He also wakes everyone up on night flights.

Sheeshisthatthetime · 19/06/2020 12:39

@jebthesheep🧡

pinkunicorn20 · 19/06/2020 12:40

I'm a really loud sneezer and find it embarrassing :(
Absolutely not done for attention and no amount of trying to sneeze quietly can change it

Rainandclouds · 19/06/2020 12:49

I also have a husband that’s a shout sneezer. I have seen him do quite ones so she can do them but I am surprised the windows haven’t shattered from the sound. I am a mouse sneezer

MitziK · 19/06/2020 12:53

You don't need to make your vocal chords go GASSSSSSPPPPP - HUUUUUUUUUR when breathing (unless you have a very serious medical condition), so it is entirely unnecessary to use them to go AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

A simple intake of breath and then the sound of the breath exiting the body is all that's necessary - babies don't say AAAAACHOOOO, they learn to make the noise when they're much older and want attention as older children and adults because they've grown to be utter knobs

A sneeze can still be loud without being affected. AAAAAAAACHOOOOO is a complete affectation in English speakers - if you look up the onomatopoeic equivalents in other languages, you get words that are similar and mimic the sound of a genuine sneeze without shouting it.

ravenmum · 19/06/2020 12:58

Do some people also know how to cough silently?

Rosebel · 19/06/2020 13:03

My partner isn't too bad but my dad has made every grandchild of his cry by sneezing. Even when they were a bit older they'd still jump. I honestly can't believe how loud it is.

MitziK · 19/06/2020 13:03

@ravenmum

Do some people also know how to cough silently?
Do you mean 'just cough and not deliberately add vocalisations to the sound of a normal cough'?
ravenmum · 19/06/2020 13:10

I mean, I can repress a cough better than a sneeze, but I can't do it entirely silently.

liaun · 19/06/2020 13:19

It is 100% possible to sneeze without using your vocal chords

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/06/2020 13:22

Perhaps Francis Bacon's nearest and dearest were shoutsneezers — he came up with this in the 1500s.

"...it hath been observed, that if one be about to Sneeze, the Rubbing of the Eyes, till they run with Water, will prevent it. Whereof the Cause is, for that the Humour, which was descending to the Nosthrills, is diverted to the Eyes."
