AIBU To ask my OH not to Shoutsneeze?

(This is about the everyday cold in happier times, obvs).

I can produce a reasonably low decibel constrained "a-pfna", considerate to the eardrums of those nearby, not disturbing a cinema or theatre audience, not causing a cyclist to wobble, etc.

So why does he think "AAAAHHHH - HEURGGGGHHH" registering on the Richter earthquake scale with full vocal projection including right in my ear when I am nearly asleep is acceptable?

And why does he get annoyed when asked to modulate his performance?

AIBU?

@SocialConnection

😂 I'm sorry I've unleashed a monster ... Picked the scab off a festering boil of resentment ... the *@7teenletters* levitating dog, tho' 🤣 literally crying now
It was very funny!! Ddog was In the zone carefully sniffing behind a bin When his world was rocked Grin you could almost see him roll his eyes in exasperation when he realised there was no need to be alarmed 😂
gamerchick · 19/06/2020 09:52

Husband is loud as well. Except he does 3 in row... Sometimes more. Sometimes it goes on for a while.... He refuses antihistamines.

midgebabe · 19/06/2020 09:52

Only about 45% of the population can control the volume of their sneeze significantly, just because you can does not mean everyone can

Flamerouge · 19/06/2020 09:54

Urgh I sympathise. My partner sneezes SO LOUDLY and it’s ridiculously irritating. I am able to modulate my sneezes but he won’t even try! His performance sneezes make me momentarily homicidal. And why won’t he put his hand over his mouth? He would if we were out but somehow in the house he reserves the right to free sneeze everywhere. Gaaaaaahhhhhhhh

oohyoudevilyou · 19/06/2020 09:54

I shoutsneeze. If I try and keep it quiet, the pressure stays internal and I piss myself Blush

emcero1 · 19/06/2020 09:59

When I have a cold I can control my sneezes, but my hayfever at the moment is off the scale and I absolutely cannot control it. Sorry OP, YABU!

PurrBox · 19/06/2020 10:00

My loud sneezes are not attention seeking. I do them when I am alone, and am glad no one is around to be annoyed at me. Controlling them is possible, but uncomfortable and still makes a bit of an awkward sound. I do try, because my daughter hates the sound.

JustC · 19/06/2020 10:00

My husband sometines does it. Not every sneeze, just some. At my request he tried to control it, as I startle easily, but he sometimes honestly can't, and when he does it will cause a weird pressure in his ears. I've let it go, in the grand scheme of things, it's not that big of a deal.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 19/06/2020 10:03

YABU. My sneezes are very loud and there's nothing I can do about it. I'll also do about 12 on the trot. I'm obviously just not the prissy little atchoo type.

ThickFast · 19/06/2020 10:03

You shouldn’t try to silence sneezes because the pressure can be so much you can burst a hole in your throat, as this man did!

Notverygrownup · 19/06/2020 10:03

My people!!! I'm married to a shoutsneezer too. I am just so grateful to have a name for it, and to know I am not alone.

Never thought I would be laughing at it, so thanks for this thread. Thought I was more likely to end up inside for justifiable homicide.

Only about 45% of the population can control the volume of their sneeze significantly, just because you can does not mean everyone can. Please can we have a source for this fabulous piece of research?

(Anyone else picturing the conversation that lead to it?
'Now what can I do my PhD on? What do people need to understand to make life better?
"AAAAHHHH - HEURGGGGHHH"
Has heart attack. Restarts own heart. 'Oh, yes. I know . . .") Smile

PintOfCoffeePlease · 19/06/2020 10:04

Grin at some of the responses on this thread!

One of my closest friends does this. We laugh about it making me jump, but I cringe when he does it in large echoing places. Everyone turns round to stare. Once, someone on the other side of a shopping centre hallway (twenty feet away) was so startled she dropped her shopping!

SimonJT · 19/06/2020 10:07

I’m a shout sneezer, I can only breathe out of one nostril,

Jocasta2018 · 19/06/2020 10:08

I can modulate the volume of my sneeze and in consideration of others have always sneezed into my arm or a tissue.
Sadly when I sneeze, I have a tendency to simultaneously fart so I make a different, and often embarrassing, sound....

HouchinBawbags · 19/06/2020 10:10

I wish I could control the volume and intensity of my sneezes. Like my DH I can't. When he sneezes our neighbour shouts from his house "Fer fuck's sake Bob!" as a joke.
I have a bad back and sneezing puts it out for days or at the very least causes absolute agony. If I could do a little mouse sneeze I would. However it's just not possible. My head would explode and I'd probably piss myself.

SerenDippitty · 19/06/2020 10:11

I’m a shoutsneezer. Inherited from my dad. Probably tmi but can’t vomit silently either. My poor long suffering DH.

ArbitraryNameChange · 19/06/2020 10:13

I live with someone who does this, but not just loud sneezing, but loud REPETITIVE sneezing.

He cannot sneeze once. The record was ten on the hop. Dear god...

ConfessionsOfAChocoholic · 19/06/2020 10:17

Tbh I get annoyed at silent sneezers, the people who you can tell are about to sneeze but then when it comes it's as quiet as a mouse's fart. I have a friend who sneezes 5 times in a row, his whole face contorts but he makes fuck all noise. Embrace the feeling of a shoutsneeze.

Mrsjayy · 19/06/2020 10:18

My dog used to leave the room when I sneeze just excuse himself and leave Grin he is fine now and was never arsed about dh and his shoutsneeze

Rembrandt · 19/06/2020 10:23

DP claims he 'can't help' the rodeo whoop that comes out when he sneezes.

That's the perfect description for my DH. :o

It's a ground-shaking "Waaaaaairrr-hooooooooo!"

Even our own children have threatened him with patricide.

Mumoblue · 19/06/2020 10:26

My DP does this and I hate it.

He's been trying to smother them because it upsets the baby, but it's still way too loud.

Dogsovercats · 19/06/2020 10:28

I'm a shoutsneezer - I tried to moderate it once and it felt like I almost blew out my eardrums.

Shout yawning on the other hand CAN be controlled.

EasynowPatrick · 19/06/2020 10:29

I have never heard anyone shoutsneeze in a meeting or during a ceremony of any kind! You don’r need to vocalise a sneeze, it’s weird attention seeking.

Rookie93 · 19/06/2020 10:29

Someone at work shoutsneezes, often three or four times in a row. It's very loud in a large open plan office, and does seem attention seeking. They claim it can't be controlled. Strangely no one else seems to have the same problem and there are about 40 people in the office - pre covid anyway.

Since having children they've got slightly quieter, assume they learnt how to not disturb the baby.

EmbarrassedUser · 19/06/2020 10:32

I once made my first whole office turn round and look at me because I sneezed so loudly Blush The worst thing was I didn’t even notice as I had my headphones in 😂 However, I am the person who also didn’t notice that the whole office had left for a staff meeting because I was so engrossed In something. I just looked up eventually and was like ‘where’s everyone gone?’ (60 people)
