If, like me, you see the lack of education provision for months and the devastating effect on the UK economy and people's livelihoods as marginally more important than a bunch of millionaires kicking a ball about you can come here to lament the lack of fucks around these parts. Football widows welcome.

I do get this about the economy etc but I just think there are more important things to focus on just now such as getting schools back in order to move the economy on even more! It feels as if sport is the be all and end all : it really isn't.

clary · 17/06/2020 20:21

@mynameiscalypso

I really hate these type of threads for a number of reasons - the assumption that women can't be interested in football; the assumption that all footballers are millionaire arseholes who don't give a shit; the assumption that just because you personally don't like something that it makes anyone who does like it somehow lesser.
Yes. This. I am not personally a massive footy fan, I prefer other sports, but ds and DH both love it and have missed it.

Neither of them is a drunken lout, it's a social thing as well as a sporting thing.

I enjoy swimming and watching athletics. I am missing those, but I don't expect you all to feel the same way. Doesn't make me wrong.

The government havent had anything to do with football getting back to it though, so I don't see why there is the comparison drawn because it's not like they were using resources on football which should have been put elsewhere.

AttackoftheVapours · 17/06/2020 20:26

Just I was scrolling through AIBU @TakemedowntoPotatoCity and saw your thread, my husband picked up his iPad and said ‘Oooh, I wonder what’s happening in the football?” My immediate thought? “Fuck me, here we go again” 😕

ShinyFootball · 17/06/2020 20:26

Yeah I couldn't give a fuck either.

DH is not interested he's more into rugby and we all watch athletics tennis etc

The fact they have been got all these old matches on TV etc is sad as fuck.

I also found it interesting that some of the first things to reopen were fishing and golf.

And yes I know some women like these things but they are certainly male dominated.

The80sweregreat · 17/06/2020 20:28

It just feels crass to focus so much on sport when there are children not getting an education. I appreciate it's not the government doing this , but the culture secretary was excited about horse racing starting up the other week so they do have interests in sport and the money it brings in.
I can see all sides but it feels as if the tv news is just a bit obsessed by all this and not so much about other things like schools and how people can't get a GP appointment and all the other problems this health emergency has thrown up.
I agree that a few jobs may be saved by it starting up but I can't help feeling it shouldn't have so much coverage!

DuncinToffee · 17/06/2020 20:43

There you go! A thread for all footie fans to f off scoot along to. meanwhile please let us have our 'safe space'!!

You are welcome Wink

FWIW, personally I think the football should have ended at lockdown and start the new season in September.

Livelovebehappy · 17/06/2020 20:44

I’m not a fan, but appreciate that a lot of people are and surely at the moment it’s good to see someone getting a bit of enjoyment out of the joyless pit we’re in. It’s possible to sit down and watch a game of football as well as worrying about current life situations. It takes some people’s minds of things though which has to be a good thing for mental health.

This!

I'm no football fan but DH and DS have been so excited all day so i'm happy for them.

Oblomov20 · 17/06/2020 20:49

Love football. Dh lives it. Loves it. Both ds's adore it and play.

Still can't believe it's on tonight. But we need to make steps. They had tents outside primark!

ShinyFootball · 17/06/2020 21:19

Why not tennis/ athletics/ show jumping/ snooker or any of the loads of other sports out there that are more amenable to disk social distancing?

We all know, right?

hashtagbollocks · 17/06/2020 21:25

shiny
table tennis ,darts, horse racing are all back on.
so is tennis
what is it we all know ( genuinely don't know what you mean)

cookiemonster5 · 17/06/2020 21:33

I'm excited. Now I can go craft in the kitchen and watch Netflix or listen to my audio booms without my husband coming in and looking like a lost soul because he wants some company. Cross-stitch here I come!

mynameiscalypso · 17/06/2020 21:34

I've never really understood why the fact that football makes money is considered a bad thing; unlike a lot of sports (F1 for example), most UK players live here and therefore pay tax here. Ditto the clubs. Plus you have hundreds of other jobs that rely on it as an industry.

Distiller91 · 17/06/2020 21:45

Season ticket holding Evertonian. I can also wait for football to return, preferably a while WinkGrin

psychomath · 17/06/2020 21:47

Good thing make up counters and shoe shops are open now to balance it out then, eh?

AKissAndASmile · 17/06/2020 22:22

My neighbour on the other side of the party wall is an Arsenal fan. I'm just hoping he hasn't invited his mates round to watch the later match and sing along to football anthems well into the early hours hmm
I don't think your neighbour will be singing any anthems tonight Grin

hammeringinmyhead · 17/06/2020 23:04

What are the solo sports dominated by women that you think should have been included in that stage of easing lockdown? The only ones I know of are running and cycling, which were permitted anyway.

I'm personally delighted. I will take any normality I can get.

WeMarchOn · 17/06/2020 23:13

Big football fan (my username)
I can't stand female football it's slow af

LaurieMarlow · 17/06/2020 23:14

I get nothing out of football whatsoever.

However, it doesn’t take a genius to see that others do, have missed it hugely and I’m happy for them.

Surely if you’re a football widow, you knew this was coming and you entered in willingly. It’s not like your DP would have kept it secret during initial dating. Grin

IamaBluebird · 17/06/2020 23:40

WeMarchon, would have been looking forward to the game on Sunday. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to you. Daffodil

ShinyFootball · 17/06/2020 23:43

'table tennis ,darts, horse racing are all back on.
so is tennis'

I haven't spotted a fuss being made about them being back, and televised on major channels. Did I miss that? I may well have done TBF.

The thing I found interesting was that I always thought I preferred watching individual sports than team sports. Then I saw the women's football and got well into it!

I wish they would show a wider range of sport on the major channels that would be good.

hashtagbollocks · 18/06/2020 08:13

shinyfootball
there was a massive "fuss" made of the fact horse racing was back on.
radio 5 went on and on about it.
so yes. You did bizarrely miss it somehow.
maybe tune in to a current affairs programme during the day?

Thurmanmurman · 18/06/2020 08:19

Not for me, but I'm glad it's back as DH is a fan. I can't wait until my DS can start playing with his team again. Just because you don't like it, it seems pretty spiteful to not want it back on, given the millions of people who enjoy it. Like saying you don't care if pubs open because you don't like to go out drinking.

fandajji · 18/06/2020 08:21

I'm no fan but I'm glad people have something enjoyable to do. I am worried about the domestic violence that is proven to come along with football. There is a known correlation and after months of people being trapped together I do worry about some households. I think putting it on without getting people back out of the house will harm some women and children, but I'm not sure that would ever be considered a valid reason to not resume it asap.
