FAKE NEWS! YEAR 10 & 12 ARE NOT BACK AT SCHOOL

areallthenamesusedup · 15/06/2020 13:47

I am listening to the news today and there is much talk about the year 10's and years 12's being back at school. No they are not. My Yr 12 son has 3 hours scheduled between now and the end of term.....not 3 hours/day, not 3 hours/week.....3 hours till mid July!

Is it just our school?

This is exactly what Boris said was going to happen, the press went to town with 'Y10 and 12 back to school' and so everyone was expecting full days for them. The press are to blame for this massive mess up, they raised the hopes of the students and now the majority of them feel let down because the schools can only offer them a few hours a week at the most. No one was ever told that they would be back at school full time - they were told 'some face to face teaching'.

Teachers are still setting work online and continuing to teach them as they have been throughout lock down. I agree it is not good enough considering half the country is jumping for joy that 'lock down is over' and queuing up outside Primark.

ToothFairyNemesis · 15/06/2020 14:55

they were told 'some face to face teaching'.
@ScubaSteven no they were told some face to face contact it was clear it would mainly be pastoral support/talking over work previously set.

Anotherdayanother2 · 15/06/2020 14:55

My DS's school has full days 5 days a week for yr 10 and 12 in London

PinkCrayon · 15/06/2020 14:58

My friends child is in year 10 and he is in for 4 hours 1 day a week.

flumposie · 15/06/2020 14:59

Ours are getting 4 hours with each subject.

2020meh · 15/06/2020 15:00

Year 12 at my dcs' school are getting 3 sessions of 2.5 hours per subject between now and the end of summer term.

So 22.5 hours in total. It's a sought after sixth form in a large intake school.

I'm wondering where we'd stand with hiring a tutor over Zoom or skype or something.

Sadly dc is doing Chemistry & Biology and a tutor surely can't do practical lab work so it'll be dull theoretical subject learning whatever happens.

Would it be too much to ask that the science teachers film each other doing the lab work practicals that the students would have done, in an almost interactive way, with questions asked and pauses for students to write down an answer and then continuing with the session. Once these things are recorded, they'd be good for future reference or if there's a pandemic recurrence next year, the next batch of Y12's could use them too.

Something, more creative than just worksheet after worksheet of self-guided learning.

In my daughters school it was meant to be only year 12’s struggling to access the work or not engaging. Then last week they hurriedly announced that it would be all year 12’s for 3 hours once a week. They will have one lesson of their weakest subject during this 3 hours.

Alfiemoon1 · 15/06/2020 15:04

My ds year 10 goes back to school tomorrow for the morning only and will be doing that weekly until further notice all other lessons are online

Hoppinggreen · 15/06/2020 15:05

My Y10 isn’t going back, although there is an afternoon Social next Friday. Not sure about a socially distanced social
However, she’s getting a full interactive timetable via Teams so I’m not complaining

planningaheadtoday · 15/06/2020 15:05

Ours has 10 minutes a week. All other lessons are properly online as live classes, as from today. So full curriculum but no face to face teaching apart from the 10 minute 1:1 consultation.

Much more sensible way for now for those older ones wanting to learn.

okiedokieme · 15/06/2020 15:05

It depends, my friend is a teacher and they have years R-6 plus 10&12 in until the end of term but it's private

whacks493 · 15/06/2020 15:05

The year 10 and 12s are only supposed to be having face time with their teachers not full time tabled lessons

Baaaahhhhh · 15/06/2020 15:06

DD Yr 12, only getting two days, Tues and Wed this week for catch up and pastoral. No teaching. TBF though, she has had full timetable on-line teaching, and had exams on-line last week. We will be getting zoom parents evenings before the end of June, with discussions on progress and predicted grades for UCAS.

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 15/06/2020 15:07

Yr 12 - full alternate weeks in school from now until end of term.

Online detailed feedback and support for EPQ with the option to go in this week for face to face tutorials.

It seems it varies. We've had plenty of contact by phone as well as checking in that scheduled work is on track. No let-up at all, if anything he's more slammed than usual.

Marsalimay · 15/06/2020 15:07

YABU to use the phrase, "FAKE NEWS!".

I hate how Trump not only corrupts the English language but has lowered the bar of discourse so low that adults now talk in this way.

CremeEggThief · 15/06/2020 15:11

My Y12 boy who is already disengaged and has been doing minimal work since March, and has some mental health issues, is in on Wednesday morning. And then perhaps another morning during the week of the 6th July, but the school haven't decided yet.

To be clear, I blame the government for this shambles, NOT the schools and teachers who are doing their very best in an impossible situation.

MoonfaceAndSilky · 15/06/2020 15:13

I'm not keen on 'fake news' either Grin
I have year 10 twins, one school is in 2 hrs per week, the other 1hr 45 mins per week. Both going over the work they should've done in lockdown. Pointless.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 15/06/2020 15:17

It’s the same in wales. They say all kids going back to school for the month of July but each year group is only going back for a total of 4 ‘check-in’ days.

Mine are getting mornings only at secondary and with staggered starts and ends so may be not entire school morning that's not clear yet- though TBH I glad of anything now.

Still waiting to hear from the other school.

MirandaWest · 15/06/2020 15:17

At my DCs school year 10 are in for two days every other week. One day is English maths and science and the other day is options.

Not sure about year 12 as not as much has been said about them but think an hour per subject per week. But this might be face to face or might be ie zoom.

DCs are in year 11 and year 9 so nothing in school until September

Baaaahhhhh · 15/06/2020 15:17

I blame the government for this shambles

I blame the virus Grin.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 15/06/2020 15:17

I’m a bit mystified about only allowing 1/4 of a year group in - they’ve only got 2 years in so that’s about 1/16 of the kids at a time. 1/4 of normal student numbers would have been more logical.

My ds is getting 3 short days before the summer, doing maths, English and science. It will make a change from sitting at home watching powerpoints.

sunlight81 · 15/06/2020 15:19

My y12 is in 1 day per subject

namechangenumber2 · 15/06/2020 15:19

My nieces school has offered something like 9 hours for yr 12 and 7 hours for year 10..

Between now and end of July..

Not even per week!

They're not going, my SIL feels that if she's going to risk to them going back then she really wants it to worth it!

IsAnybodyListening · 15/06/2020 15:20

My YR10DS goes back Friday only, for the next 4 Fridays until Summer hols.

CremeEggThief · 15/06/2020 15:21

@Baaaahhhhh, so you don't think the government have handled the whole school situation disgracefully?

The British government has handled the whole Covid 19 crisis in the most inept, shambolic way possible. Ireland and every other European country try and actually every other country with the possible exception of America and Brazil have handled everything far, far better.

I really don't think there's anything at all to laugh about.Hmm
