I am listening to the news today and there is much talk about the year 10's and years 12's being back at school. No they are not. My Yr 12 son has 3 hours scheduled between now and the end of term.....not 3 hours/day, not 3 hours/week.....3 hours till mid July!

Is it just our school?

Have there been any suggestions as how this will affect exams/results for next year?

My DD is in year 12 and has had full online lessons throughout lockdown. They have been offered a face to face meeting with their teachers next week if they want one. Whilst it's great that they have had full lessons, she's really struggling, and considering changing her subjects for next year. Perhaps she would have done anyway, but it does feel like being out of the classroom has not helped. She's super shy and awkward at the best of times, so I expect is interacting even less than she would be in class. Still, if she does another year at college, it puts off trying to enter the world of work for a while, as that's a pretty scary prospect at the moment (DS is year 13 and currently looking for an apprenticeship withouth a lot of luck so far).

It is totally shit - secondary school kids are bring thrown under a bus and it is seriously going to impact their futures.

I have had a text in the last hour to say my year 10 ‘could’ be back next week. I have no idea at this stage when or for how long etc. I think it is just going to be a face to face catch up. It’s something at least.

Qualification wales said they were looking at it but it would likely be differnet across different subjects and heard nothing since.

Department of education was at one point expecting a massive widening in attainment gap.

My son's school is 2 hours per day for Year 10, in one classroom with their form tutor doing the same online stuff they could do at home but with some pastoral time.

My daughter's school is closed completely.

My Y10 is in every Wednesday between now and the end of term.

My y12 has a full timetable but online, which has been the case since lockdown began. He won't go in before September at the very earliest, though they are offering contact time with kids that haven't been doing the online lessons. Tbh, with the pandemic unlikely to evaporate any time soon, I would like it very much if they'd continue online lessons even if/when school does open again. That way you could choose depending on your relative vulnerability and the kids that do go in could have more space and less contact with germs.

But yes, the news has entirely failed to reflect what is, and is not, happening.

I am absolutely livid seeing the photos of people queuing outside non-essential shops when children can't get an education. My son has had no personal contact with his school at all. He's been written off. No, he will not be entering the flipping silly stories creative writing competition (zero motivation when not one piece of work has been checked by his teacher). We will be going to the zoo.

My children are in reception and nursery, one is getting 6 short days this term, the other 10 mornings.

I am currently marking Yr 12 exams, and have a day of online consultations with each of my students on Thursday. After that we are looking to offer clinics but still to be decided on format - depends on outcomes from Thursdays 1-2-1's.

Guidelines are really tough, no more than 25% of a year group is really hard to juggle when you have different options being taken etc. So if we asked 2 forms to come in they would be in lots of different sets, for core subjects and lots of different subjects for options. Then if you have the correct teachers in teaching a lesson, they need to also make sure those not in get the work as well!

I don't think there is an easy solution, but I do agree with you the news is very misleading and once again making some schools look bad as they have interpreted the rules differently.

My Year 12 has 3 hours for one subject on Friday this week and 3 hours for another on Tuesday next week.

So glad the school are still charging full fucking fees though. 😡

YR 12. One 2 hour face to face lesson per subject between now and the end of term. 6 hours altogether and 9 pages of Covid avoidance instructions.

I do feel let down. I’m very worried about these youngsters.

Neither of our local state secondary schools is opening to Y10 and 12 (joint decision on grounds of safety). I believe all students in those years are being offered face to face and group tutoring online for the rest of term - so basically what the private schools have offered from the start of lockdown.

Not sure what the private schools are doing - some are back and some not.

My year12 has a half hour face to face catch up on Friday

To the best if my knowledge that will be it until September

Having said that, I am very pleased that my Y7 has also been offered an hour video call (in a small group), with her tutor this week and I the online offering has been of a very high standard overall.

My grandsons are in for 3 hours a week but that is what I heard was happening on the News so I thought it must be standard.

Its a joke, most of the teens in our small rural market town spend most of their days congregating on the meadows in town, hundreds of them, laughing, knocking a ball about, driving their cars up and down, all eyeing each other up in the sun, swigging Corona.

What Coronavirus?

It reminded me yesterday of that Summertime song by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.

Year 10s going back one day at week at DS's school but a short day so about 4 hours a week

It's a tough one. The Government has basically told the schools it is their responsibility to ensure safety and make it work with no extra funding or guidance. You can imagine schools are shit scared of having an outbreak and then having to deal with the ramifications and potential legal action.

Interesting that in France, President Macron has just announced a "mandatory return to school". Mind you, they are reporting a few hundred new cases per day as opposed to a couple of thousand.

BUT should have also said they are doing live lessons with a proper timetable and have been doing that for about 5 weeks now
