areallthenamesusedup · 15/06/2020 13:47

I am listening to the news today and there is much talk about the year 10's and years 12's being back at school. No they are not. My Yr 12 son has 3 hours scheduled between now and the end of term.....not 3 hours/day, not 3 hours/week.....3 hours till mid July!

Is it just our school?

I was somewhat cross when I saw these headlines today. Such a load of nonsense for the majority.

Even primary schools are struggling to open. My niece is in Y6 and has gone back today (was supposed to be 2 weeks ago originally) but they aren't taking the younger ones back until after the summer.
My daughter's school is offering nothing for Y10 and Y12. Am grateful my children are a bit younger but eldest is supposed to be starting Y10 in September....

My Yr 12 DD is in three half days a week. That's just under half her normal total lessons. Her school have been brilliant on line and they are on track in terms of getting through the curriculum. I'm not complaining.

My y12 will be getting one lesson per week for three weeks giving one lesson per A level subject between now and September. I am not blaming school (school has been / is amazing) ... but it is is terribly hard.

At the school I work at, we are having Y10/12 back for one day per week between now and the end of term.

So although they have some contact, it's not 'back to school as normal'.

I hope that we are back to normal in September!

My y10 child has three hours once a week only for three days until September.

My y12 child has intent from his college but nothing actually planned yet.

It's bloody awful.

Year 10 here will have 7 x 2 hour "lessons" before the end of term, they are teaching in the gym, sports hall etc. so there is room to spread out.

My year 12 has 4 hours next Friday - that’s it. We’ve also had a letter from the school saying that the head will only be opening in September only if the constraints have been eased and if he’s convinced they have been relaxed safely and not out of political expediency.

One partial day a week which started today and was apparently useless and worthless as they didn’t do any work. Zero online lessons or face to face contact since lockdown began. Appalling.

The govt certainly span this to sound better than it was. Their guidelines insist that only 25% of the year group can attend. They can't mix with with other students and have limited free time. This is why most are being sent away at lunch time.

My DS is going one day a week 9.15-2.50 and covering just core subjects. The school i teach at is doing 9-12.30. Core subjects for 3 weeks then options after that.

Totally agree. Half day a week for y12 dd. School aren't doing full days because providing food creates more organisational headaches and need for cleaning.

I don't understand why Nightingale Schools weren't created for y10 and y12. You could set up the room like you do with exams and have university style lectures in subjects that aren't streamed (say Geography) and you could have a few adults walking around and helping them do the work. Our school is in an academy chain with another local school and offer share teachers and events so it's really common for kids to go to the "other" school for the day. To simplify cleaning they could have a day for each subject (y10) Obviously bubbles won't work for secondary but as there's only about 4 weeks to go hopefully anybody who is ill will be on summer holiday.

Just reading some of the responses on this thread, and it is clear there is a MASSIVE difference in the online learning delivery experience for our Year 10s and 12s.
I am pleased that some of your kids have had a good experience, but it will be so unfair to the kids that haven't had this to be disadvantaged in next year's exams. If they haven't been given the same opportunities, how can they do as well?

What is the government going to do to level the playing field?

I think schools are making up there own set of rules dd is year 7 and she has been offered 2 half days a week at school with her learning mentor, not all the year 7's have been offered a place just a handful that are struggling with the work. I don't want her to go in but shes happy to go.

nope. My year 10 isn't back - school is still closed. My yr6 is back along with half of his class. There is now "no room" for any other of his classmates to return. Its a shambolic mess.

As a cohort they are in, but because of social distancing they have been split into groups. So I was in school with a group of Y12s today, but I think each student will only be in for 2 days between now and the end of the year. This is for UCAS preparation/pastoral matters, all their timetabled lessons are still being delivered remotely until the end of term.

Yes.

As to what they will do about if - I'm not sure they know TBH - there's suggestions of moving the distribtion grade curve but that still means pupils at some schools will still have an advantage hence the worry about the widening attainment gap.

Our Year 10 (we don't have a year 12) are getting 8 x 15 minute 1-1 appointments with staff between now and the end of the year. It's the only way we could do it.

The government have capped it at 25% and you cannot have one set in the morning and a different set of children in the afternoon.

Year 10s at my son's school are in one day a week in a bubble of 10 students but Friday is an extra day so I am assuming if it works then they will increase to alternate the groups in on the extra day.

My son is year 9 and has had loads of lessons via Google Classrooms. Plus you can contact teachers really easily via that and get a reply the same day. We have also had 2 welfare telephone calls and should get 2 more.

Ds1 is year 12, he has 2 x 2 hour slots this week and they have extended the term by 1 week. His other teacher is sheilding so will continue his lessons online. He has had a lesson every day from his sixth form.

It is appalling that other schools haven't provided any work consistently throughout this lockdown. Both of mine are very motivated boys but Ds2 is starting to get fed up of powerpoints.

I’m a bit mystified about only allowing 1/4 of a year group in - they’ve only got 2 years in so that’s about 1/16 of the kids at a time. 1/4 of normal student numbers would have been more logical

You’d think so, wouldn’t you, but it’s surprising in practice how few you can fit in and maintain social distancing and hygiene measures. It’s not just space in the classrooms, it’s also arrival and departure, toilets, hand washing etc. Hence the government instructions only to allow 1/4 of those year groups.

Different schools have clearly gone for different approaches depending on their circumstances. My school is providing 4 hours teaching per subject for each student, but I can see how other schools with less suitable spaces may not be able to do this.

YANBU (80%) of votes so far...

My Y10 is due in next Tues for 3 hours.
Then 'hopefully' 2 more Tues before end of term.
SN / SEN and under Caamhs for Anxiety, heightened by C-19.
It's SHIT and I am sick of the Govt passing the buck to Schools who are offering hugely varying levels of 'education' and support

Year 10's at my DDs school are back today..they are in bubbles in different areas of the school. As far as I know they are in full time, but not sure how they are working the teaching aspect.

My friend has a year 10 in the other high school in town and she is having a 30min tutorial once a week - which seems a bit pointless!
