She is an awful character, she seems to prefer Harry to Ron and is mean to Fleur. She is also a bit of a stereotype, the apron, the knitting, the homemaker etc. Which literary characters annoy you and why?

Not a book character, but i hate "hot priest" from fleabag. Just don't get it.

EmperorCovidula · 13/06/2020 17:48

Elizabeth bennet really annoys me. I know she’s supposed to be witty etc but I just find her quite irritating and self absorbed.

ScribblyGum · 13/06/2020 17:49

Still feel very conflicted about Becky Sharpe.

MrsToothyBitch · 13/06/2020 17:49

I always had mixed feelings on Mrs Weasley. She's lovely but can be a bit heavy handed and stifling- and she doesn't seem to accept her sons GFs!

My irrational hatred is Jo March Blush. I think she's an arrogant bitch and she deserved Amy burning her novel, and Amy getting the Europe trip instead of her - although she loves her family and her sacrifice of her hair for her father and her love for Beth do touch me. She was right to reject Laurie and she's much better after her stint as a governess & meeting Prof Baher. I do think she has good qualities, I just can't stick her cockiness initially!

roxfox · 13/06/2020 17:50

Hermione. She really winds me up. Like as soon as she got over her fear of saying Voldemort she expected Ron to instantly, even though he'd had a lifetime of inherited fear!
Loads of other stuff too.

Mrsjayy · 13/06/2020 17:50

Oh no Mrs Weasly is a ledge Lilly Potter on the other hand looked a bit of a mean girl Grin

Pinkblueberry · 13/06/2020 17:52

I’ve always struggled a bit with Mrs Weasley. JK often said we should respect her for choosing to be a housewife and looking after her family because that’s a valid life choice (if she was real life muggle I would say ‘yes of course!’) but none of her kids live at home (they don’t even come home for Christmas sometimes) and she has magic to help her do the housework - all the while poor Ron’s been having to sellotape his broken hand me down wand which still doesn’t work properly, because Mr Weasley doesn’t make enough money to buy a new one - even as teenager I read this and thought she needs to stop knitting jumpers that no one wants to wear and get a job.

PatchworkElmer · 13/06/2020 17:54

I think Molly’s not perfect. However- this is a highlight of the books for me-

I really dislike Mrs Weasley.
lovepickledlimes · 13/06/2020 18:03

One character I absolutely hate that everyone seems to love is Ginny. She was down right mean to Luna, broke Hermione's trust just to get back at Ron and is horrid to Fleur, Cho or any girl that dared to look at Harry. She never gets called out for it or put in her place either.

srownbkingirl · 13/06/2020 18:07

Didn't like Mrs Weasley much either. I liked that Harry became like a son to her but it often felt like instead of an addition, he replaced Ron. Regardless of Ron being her bio son, one child shouldn't feel treated less fairly than another and she did so often with Ron, even compared to his siblings. I feel he was neglected and expected to bear it with a smile.

Secondly, she's too shouty...although I've only read the books but her constant "nagging" (for lack of a better word) mostly at Ron was tiresome. Always felt pity for him.

I do like that she stands up for her family as a whole and anybody she likes.Grin

Grasspigeons · 13/06/2020 18:08

To be fair wizards dont seem to go to school until they are 11 so ginny is at home full time in the first book. Mrs weasley must have has a child at home full time from when the eldest was born until ginny went to school. After that career reak it would be very difficult to re-enter the workplace

RoseAndRose · 13/06/2020 18:10

Mrs Weasley might have been the embarrassing full time mother (extra maternal to counterbalance the lack of mothering Harry had?)

but she was the one who used the killing curse

DoloresOnTheDottedLine · 13/06/2020 18:10

@EmperorCovidula have you ever read Longbourn? P&P told from the perspective of the servants - you get a very different view of Elizabeth Bennett and it’s a beautifully written book.

I absolutely detest Frodo from LOTR. SUCH a whiny little liability - thank god Sam was there or literally nothing would have gotten done.

EmpressJewel · 13/06/2020 18:12

Becky from the shopaholic series.

I loved the first book, Becky was funny and a regular young woman at the start of her career and finding her way in the world.

As the series progressed, she looses touch with reality with a high earning husband and rich woman problems.

DdraigGoch · 13/06/2020 18:14

When?

NotYetBaby · 13/06/2020 18:16

I despise Max from Where the Wild Things Are. Little shit.

Witchend · 13/06/2020 18:19

I'd agree with Mrs Weasley. Ron's already got low self esteem. She then clearly favours Harry (and Percy, and the twins) above him.
There's also that rather nasty point where she's read the gossip about Hermoine, and sends her a tiny egg. If she'd left Hermoine out then Hermoine would have thought it was just for family and Harry. By sending her a tiny egg, it rubs it in that it's deliberate.

MrsToothyBitch · 13/06/2020 18:20

I don't like Ginny either! You just know she'd have been mean to you at school!

Another character I don't enjoy is Rose Red in "What Katy Did At School". Tries so hard to be funny... attention seeking, over bearing madam!

ProseccoBubbleFantasies · 13/06/2020 18:23

I never liked Mary-Anne Singleton.

Luckily, by then end of the series, the author goes off her too

Samtsirch · 13/06/2020 18:25

Becky Sharpe is brilliant!!!
It’s Amelia I loathe, so wet and pathetic.

Doggodogington · 13/06/2020 18:27

Ah I think Mrs Weasley was lovely, she was just trying to over-mother Harry because of how he grew up. I bet Ron was glad of the brake.
Lilly and James though....Hmm not standing up for Snape even though he was her first friend, letting James bully him. Shame on them both.

elessar · 13/06/2020 18:27

Oh YES to Frodo! Although more from the films than the books. I always get irate that Frodo gets all the praise and recognition when he turns into an absolute arsehole, Sam basically saves his arse a bunch of times and literally carries him at the end, and then Frodo still almost cocks it up.

And also yes to Becky from the Shopaholic series.I do actually really enjoy the books, but she irritates me no end - her complete inability to take any responsibility for her actions, her selfishness and the way she lies through her teeth to basically everyone.

vanillandhoney · 13/06/2020 18:27

Harry's parents - especially James.

StatementKnickers · 13/06/2020 18:28

Agree re shopaholic @EmpressJewel but even in the first book she was a stupid, self-centred airhead. I never read any of the others.

srownbkingirl · 13/06/2020 18:29

Didn't care much for Ginny either. I liked her when she was younger (not the giggly, I can't speak because I like Harry bit..yuck!) but older Ginny just seemed too cold. As I kept reading, I rarely felt warmth from her, even as Harry's love interest but I can't say she did anything in particular I disliked....IIRC.

Luna's my girl! Wish Angelina's character was fleshed out more. Wanted to read more about her story, the little I read was not enough to make me feel anyway towards her.
