I really dislike Mrs Weasley.

She is an awful character, she seems to prefer Harry to Ron and is mean to Fleur. She is also a bit of a stereotype, the apron, the knitting, the homemaker etc. Which literary characters annoy you and why?

Malcolm from 'The Book of Dust'. As a character he was so promising. But his growing attraction for Lyra, who he's taken care of in babyhood and taught as an undergraduate, is as dodgy in undertow as its presentation is unconvincing (he's suddenly violently in love with her; there's no slow-burn or sense of a developing attraction). Plus everyone else unaccountably knows of this love, despite the only real interaction between the two characters taking place through letters.

Clumsy, awkward, and not up to Pullman's usually subtle and nuanced characterisation.

ShebaShimmyShake · 13/06/2020 18:45

She favours Ginny and clearly just kept on having children until she got a girl, though Arthur has to take responsibility too.

She's ok though. It's Ginny I can't stand. I think she's meant to be feisty but she's just really rude and cruel sometimes.

Daddy Hare in Guess how much I love you?
Competitive fucker. Just cant let his little kid win. Ohh no always has to go that little bit further.

Mirrorsin · 13/06/2020 18:47

Bella Swan, for reasons outlined by @elessar, and Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, because she's just so full of her own importance!

srownbkingirl · 13/06/2020 18:48

@blosstree

I don't like Sirius Black or Remus Lupin. Find Sirius completely irresponsible as a mentor to Harry, and Remus just thoroughly irritates me for absolutely no reason whatsoever - I literally feel jittery with rage when reading his parts sometimes Blush melodramatic, I know Grin
Your Remus reaction made me laugh.

I always felt anxious with Sirius, live wire that one was. I didn't like that he died but I still felt a little relieved that Harry would stop his dangerous escapades because of him.

@Yester
Yes I totally agree !
Has to have the last word.

sageandroses · 13/06/2020 18:48

Jacob from Twilight.

I read them as a teen, and recently reread them after many years.

There's been a lot of stuff in the media about Edward and his relationship with Bella being problematic, which it is, BUT:

However, reading as an adult I realised that Jacob is an absolute twat, the absolute WORST and to me exhibits behaviour that is 100% worse than Edward's.

He kisses Bella without her consent after she has rejected him a number of times, to the point where she has to PUNCH him, and then finds it HILARIOUS that she broke her hand doing it! And to make it worse her father thinks it's hilarious too.

He then, at the end of Eclipse, manipulates her into kissing him again by implying that he will deliberately get himself killed in the fight if she doesn't.

Absolute. Twat.

lovepickledlimes · 13/06/2020 18:49

@DdraigGoch in the books she called Luna Looney Lovegood. When Harry, Ron and Hermione asked who she was.

Silvercatowner · 13/06/2020 18:52

I can't bear Jo Bettany/Maynard from the Chalet School serious. Sanctimonious and often mean.

Jux · 13/06/2020 18:53

All the people in Wuthering Heights were/are vile. Loathe the lot of them.

shergar · 13/06/2020 18:55

James Potter was clearly an absolute dick.

Nightbirdcackle · 13/06/2020 18:55

@ellesar I was going to say Bella Swan too! Unbelievably selfish, dull and self absorbed. The way she expects Jacob to wait around for her when she has absolutely no intention of being with him because she's committed herself to that personality-free zone Edward, her soulmate in tediousness.

Molly Weasley is not perfect but that's the beauty of most of the characters in Harry Potter, most of them are well-written 3D characters, none of them are faultless and are a mix of good and bad.

Cailleach1 · 13/06/2020 18:56

King Lear. Cordelia let down by him. Regan and Goneril didn't come out of nowhere.

Nightbirdcackle · 13/06/2020 18:57

@elessar Sorry, I meant to address my post to you!

RowenaRavenclawTheSecond · 13/06/2020 19:00

@lovepickledlimes I don't think that makes her that awful, really.

Yes, it's not nice, and yes, it's two-faced, but she is nice to and friends with Luna after that. It's implied they didn't really know each other well before.

I think readers sometimes project ideals onto characters unfairly. They are still teenagers - Ginny was I think barely 14 when that comment is made in Order of the Phoenix. When I think back to when I was 14, my friends and I used to gossip amongst ourselves all the time. But I would never have gossiped outside of my close friendship group, or said to someone's face that I didn't like their new haircut. I would talk about it with my friends privately though.

It's completely normal, like how we all sit watching telly and say stuff to our families about people that we most likely wouldn't to their faces. That doesn't make us horrible - what would make us horrible would be if we commented awful things on their social media pictures.

YellowHats · 13/06/2020 19:00

I love mrs weasley! She clearly cant work because shes too busy being the warm, motherly figure harry has always needed. Shes one of my absolute favourites.

I really dont like Ginny. Shes a cross between a mean girl and also really pathetic. How did the weasleys manage to create the weasley twins - hilarious, full of personality and then ginny?

I think Harry in the films is a right twat towards the end, his ego is massive but he has no personality, hes just really flat and so it makes him dislikable, he also gets a little greyness to his lip where his moustache is coming through and its really off putting. And he keeps endangering all his friends

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 13/06/2020 19:00

Has anyone read Brooklyn! The main character Eilis Lacey pisses me off left, right and centre. She never makes her own decisions, never expresses her opinion, basically goes along with whatever any of the supporting characters tell her to do. Ends up married because she doesn't have the gumption to say no.

Excellent example of a male writer who has no concept of how to write a decent female lead....

CherryValanc · 13/06/2020 19:01

Can't recall very well, but I'm sure there's something in the books where one on the Weasley gets second hand clothes and Molly alters the by magic. (Think it might be Percy.) Yet Ron gets, some horrible dress robs, as well as always gets a jumper in a colour he doesnt like. There's loads of little things that kept making and think Molly didnt like him that much!!

I really dislike Winston Smith - the misogynistic self-centered prat. Utterly loath him, wish he'd be vapourised at the start of Chapter 2.

lovepickledlimes · 13/06/2020 19:04

@RowenaRavenclawTheSecond what about her treatment of Fleur calling her Phlegm? her getting jealous of an 11 year old who had a little school girl crush on Harry and batted her eyes at him? what about her jealousy of Cho when she refused to let Cho anywhere near Harry in a Crisis situation when Cho offered to help?

jamandtonic · 13/06/2020 19:13

@EmperorCovidula

Elizabeth bennet really annoys me. I know she’s supposed to be witty etc but I just find her quite irritating and self absorbed.
Yes, especially when it turned out it was the size of Mr D's house that caught her eye.
SquidwardTortellini95 · 13/06/2020 19:14

Lily Potter.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 13/06/2020 19:14

Nelly Dean of Wuthering Heights is a truly malignant witch wearing the guise of a cloak of benevolence.

I literally just dug out my log in details to agree with this. All the characters in Wuthering Heights are totally flawed but Nelly fucking Dean makes me rage with her sanctimonious retelling.

RowenaRavenclawTheSecond · 13/06/2020 19:14

@lovepickledlimes I didn't say she was perfect did I? I was talking about that one instance you brought up.

As for the Fleur thing - sorry but Fleur's behaviour towards the Weasleys wasn't nice! I'm not surprised there were tensions. Complaining there was nothing to do apart unless you like cooking and chickens (when they were hosting her!), making passive aggressive comments about hair colour, constantly saying how her family does everything better, she's downright rude and ungrateful to them. If someone posted about a houseguest like her on AIBU, they'd be firmly advised to tell her to leave.

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 13/06/2020 19:15

Jodi picoult's mother characters fill me with an irrational hatred. What's the one where the woman suspects her son has been assaulted by a priest? Read it maybe 15 years ago and just felt hugely irritated by the end. Same with the one where they want to use their kid's bone marrow on their older ill child. So much potential but never picked up another Jodi P.
