I really dislike Mrs Weasley.

She is an awful character, she seems to prefer Harry to Ron and is mean to Fleur. She is also a bit of a stereotype, the apron, the knitting, the homemaker etc. Which literary characters annoy you and why?

Bridget Jones, total airhead, borderline alcoholic, with properly shit friends.

Nancydrawn · 13/06/2020 19:58

Hamlet deserves a smack.

Lovingmummy9 · 13/06/2020 19:59

@Stevienickssleeves yes! I totally hated the ‘hot priest’ in fleabag too... he wasn’t even hot. The guy who liked small boobs was funny though ‘they’re so so small!’ Grin

ShebaShimmyShake · 13/06/2020 20:01

@mbosnz

Then there's Tess of the bloody D'urbervilles. . . if I never read that book again, it would be too soon. Hated everyone in it.
She wasn't as bad as Bathsheba fucking "I literally can't stand it if just one man in the village isn't madly in love with me" Everdene. I hate Hardy.
mbosnz · 13/06/2020 20:08

I hate Hardy.

You and me both. Just utter yuk, from go to whoa.

Tanith · 13/06/2020 20:09

Can't believe we've got to 5 pages without a mention of Mary-Lou Trelawney, the girl almost everyone loathes with a passion from The Chalet School.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 13/06/2020 20:11

I actually really love Wuthering Heights but I enjoy disliking characters or flawed ones. Nelly just thought she was above the rest, whereas Heathcliff et al knew they were not nice.

Samtsirch · 13/06/2020 20:11

Fanny Price.
Needs to grow a backbone.
Or channel her inner Moll Flanders.
Also Bill Sykes.
Also Charles D’arney from A Tale of 2 cities.

Tanith · 13/06/2020 20:12

I like Molly Weasley. She reminds me of one of my grandmothers. The original Tiger-Mama who could cope with anything life threw at her and, however poor she may have been, she always had a generous welcome ready.

RedRec · 13/06/2020 20:13

Much as I love Ruth Rendell / Barbara Vine, she cannot get working class characters right. They are all gorblimey stereotypes.

FlamedToACrisp · 13/06/2020 20:13

@FaceOfASpink

And Cathy Whatserface from Wuthering Heights. She's such a twat.
Grin Grin Grin What a thought-provoking piece of criticism about one of the finest books in English Literature.

Quite agree!

BabyLlamaZen · 13/06/2020 20:17

I love how we're discussing mrs wesley's ability to return to the workplace Grin

I didnt like Ginny in her 'mean' phase aka book 6, but looking back she came across overconfident and very different to me.

I actually thought Luna was a bit rubbish Blush but I love Evanna and think she worked better on screen.

Yes to shopaholic!

Also whatshername- the lead in the 'I heart' series.

TheExterminatingAngel · 13/06/2020 20:17

Emma. Why TF did nice Mr Knightley marry her? Confused

BabyLlamaZen · 13/06/2020 20:19

@GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy.I hated the boyfriend in The.Pact! For some reason to this day I don't get why he never pushed.to find out more.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 13/06/2020 20:20

If you think about it, living at Wuthering Heights would be like living in permanent lockdown with no TV or internet.
You can go for a walk on the moor and have the very occasional visit to town or your neighbours. But that’s it.
Forever.

RaingodsWithZippos · 13/06/2020 20:21

Rannaldini in the Jilly Cooper books fills me with rage, I'm so glad he was killed off. His son Cosmo is a prick as well.

She starts off ok in the Armishire books, but by Switzerland definitely needs a massive slap.
BabyLlamaZen · 13/06/2020 20:24

@YellowHats 😂

Samtsirch · 13/06/2020 20:24

Mycat
Yes but you’d be with Heathcliffe,
That would be enough for me 😆

8elate8 · 13/06/2020 20:26

I think all the Harry Potter characters have real flaws and positives, just like real people. I think JKR is really talented I creating real characters.

I disagree with a lot of people regarding Molly Weasly, she lost her brothers in the first war against Voldemort and her biggest fear is losing anymore love ones. I think that partly why she wants to be a stay at home mum, to be with her family. I have to say I dont understand why she doesnt enter the work place when the kids are in school though, she could easily have published a housekeeping/cooking book to get some money in.
I disagree in that she prefers Ron to Harry, I dont see that at all. Ron is her son and you'll never love anyone more than your children, but she feels for Harry as he has no family, and she wants to make him feel like hes part of their family. I think Ron thinking that his mum prefers Harry to himself is his own flaw, and low self esteem.

Cannot stand Frodo from LOTR, what does he even do than make everyone else have to constantly save him? Poor Sam, I wish he had gotten recognition for basically saving Frodo and the whole mission. Could not have a better friend.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 13/06/2020 20:27

Hero annoys me in Much Ado about nothing. FFS say something! Defend yourself!

Oh and don’t then go on to marry Claudio. He’s a dick.

nildesparandum · 13/06/2020 20:27

Natasha in War and Peace
So spoilt and attention seeking

LavenderLilacTree · 13/06/2020 20:27

Oh and Uther Pendragon in Merlin.

MollyButton · 13/06/2020 20:27

I liked Luna in the films, seemed ore what JK was trying to get at than she managed in the books.

And the male writer who wrote the best women was Terry Pratchett - Nanny Ogg was my Grandmother.
