Do you wear a face covering at the supermarket?

I don’t normally but I have a coldsore so think I’ll wear one tomorrow, hopefully I won’t get any passive aggressive comments from other shoppers that have been reported here.

No.
I've been interested in how many are wearing masks and I do a quick rough count while in the tesco queue. At the mo it's about 1 in 30 people with a mask on in the Tesco queue (mega store). Sometimes less.
Around the village? None to be honest.

Rural midlands.

MamaGothel · 13/06/2020 08:24

I do. I would say about 30% do around here, at a guess. Nobody has ever said anything to me.

Ohffs66 · 13/06/2020 08:29

I do. Probably about 10-20% people do round here I would say. I've had a few eye rolls and people smirking at me, and one idiot ran at me with his trolley and shouted 'It's the masked marauder!' thinking he was hilarious, but I couldn't care less tbh. Even if it only makes a tiny bit of difference to me getting it, or to the spread generally, I will wear one.

Laiste · 13/06/2020 08:32

@Mnthrowaway20202 Why do you care if I reposition my mask?

A used or still in-use mask is 'unclean' (hence the need to take it off and bag it up straight away).

So the trouble with touching your mask a lot while out and about is the same trouble there would be with touching round your mouth a lot or coughing over your hands and then going about your business in a public place.

Igtg · 13/06/2020 08:35

I have worn one the last two times I went shopping. I find very few people seem to wear one, maybe 20%? It does make me feel slightly better when standing and queuing.

Laiste · 13/06/2020 08:36

I'd say if you find you need to reposition your mask a lot (i do, i find them really awkward) it would be more hygienic not to wear one and stick with just the 2 meter/hand gel/hand wash/don't touch your face/cough into your sleeve guidance.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 13/06/2020 08:36

@Laiste hand sanitiser exists, not sure if you’re aware?

Igtg · 13/06/2020 08:36

I actually ordered masks after a woman behind me in the Sainsbury’s queue kept coughing which really put me off.

cologne4711 · 13/06/2020 08:38

I wear one in supermarkets. Some other people are but I imagine they won't do it unless it becomes compulsory. And I suspect people also think it needs to be a proper mask (not necessarily medical grade but mask shaped) whereas I just use a runners' snood. I've not had any comments, positive or negative.

Although I went into M&S the other evening and the sales assistant asked me if I wanted my basket sanitised and I said it was fine as I'd washed my hands before I came out and would wash them again when I got home and she said "finally some common sense". I am not sure about this fetish for sanitising everything, it's a virus, you can wash it away and I don't like the idea of making bacteria even more resistant than they already are.

@katseyes7

l work in a supermarket. Tonight l've seen a lot of people wearing face masks. Four of them only had them covering their mouths, with their noses exposed. l've no idea how they think that works. Oh, and one woman with the elastic hooked over one ear, and the mask dangling under her chin.
I wear one with my nose exposed because otherwise I can't breathe.

I know that renders the face covering useless for protecting me, but I am protecting others.

FraughtwithGin · 13/06/2020 08:53

Yes, I so and have done since it became compulsory, about 6 weeks ago, but I am in Germany and we have been "let out" for a few weeks now. Actually masks are compulsory in all shops and you won't be let into a shop without one. It doesn't bother me at all, it is the requirement so I stick to it.
I do not wear a mask if I am driving my car or if I am just walking about keeping physical distance, but I carry one with me, ready to put on as required.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 13/06/2020 09:01

@Joans3rddaughter

No. I was in the supermarket yesterday, saw a woman wearing a mask blowing her nose and using a tissue into the mask! Then the mask came down, then up again, then down again...... Most people I see wearing masks cannot stop touching them, repositioning them, up, down. It drives me nuts. Why would anybody wear a mask when they are alone inside a car?
I think your question might be answered by the sentence immediately before it. If you need stuff at a couple of places and you are driving between them then you don’t want to be taking it on and off all the time.

Also, you need to wash your hands before putting it on and immediately after taking it off. Doing that at home and wearing the mask for the entire time you are out is a lot less hassle than having to faff about with bottles of hand gel in the queue outside Tesco.

Pipandmum · 13/06/2020 09:01

No. I wear one when picking up a friend for work as we can't be 2m apart in the car. We both wear masks and have a couple windows open. His partner is vulnerable (the work is outside). I did once when going in to a small shop but I was the only one.

Catastrofuck · 13/06/2020 09:11

I find the sarky “If I’m feeling charitable I assume people have a good reason for not wearing one” and “I wear one out of consideration for others” comments really interesting

chocolatemademefat · 13/06/2020 09:46

At the supermarket where I do a top up shop no one wears one. The first time I wore one there I felt like the Lone Ranger!

DanielleHirondelle · 13/06/2020 09:48

@Catastrofuck why?

LakieLady · 13/06/2020 09:55

*Tesco - Yes

Waitrose -No*

I shop in both Waitrose and Tesco. In Tesco, I see quite a few people wearing masks, but hardly any in Waitrose!

I just slip a scarf over my face while in the queue and shopping. The rang of masks online is so befuddling I lose the will to live before I've decided which ones to get.

No-one's tutted at me yet.

zingally · 13/06/2020 10:35

Not at the moment, no.

That being said, if the government turn around and say we MUST, then of course I will.

In my local large supermarket, I'd say it's currently maybe 20% of the people in their wearing masks, and almost all of those are, I'd say, 50 and over. I've also noticed it's fewer people wearing a mask than at the start of lockdown, when it was maybe closer to half.

Better quality air to breathe in Waitrose. Grin

bengalcat · 13/06/2020 13:31

Not sure about better quality of anything in Waitrose - woman in gloves and a mask this am was picking up and putting down the peppers - I stood well to the side and picked up some bagged ones when she moved on .

AnnaBanana333 · 13/06/2020 13:35

No, I find them very claustrophobic.

UnicornAndSparkles · 13/06/2020 13:35

Yes I would. I'm only going out for exercise (and I avoid that tbh!) but if I went to the shops I would absolutely wear one. If only bc if makes some people more comfortable, especially if they are in a higher risk category

PhilCornwall1 · 13/06/2020 13:54

Not sure about better quality of anything in Waitrose

I'm just imagining the next M&S advert:

This isn't just air, this is M&S air.

Laiste · 13/06/2020 13:58

Mnthrowaway20202@Laiste hand sanitiser exists, not sure if you’re aware?

That would have been more witty if it hadn't been after my post suggesting hand gel ect rather than fiddling with a mask Hmm

You actually asked why anyone care if you have to reposition your mask. I posted about how you're not meant to keep touching it. You obviously didn't expect an actual answer.
