Do you wear a face covering at the supermarket?

I don’t normally but I have a coldsore so think I’ll wear one tomorrow, hopefully I won’t get any passive aggressive comments from other shoppers that have been reported here.

@amber763 the Scottish guidance is basically the same as England. This is what it says about where to wear one...

The evidence on the use of face coverings is limited, but there may be some benefit in wearing a facial covering when you leave the house and enter enclosed spaces, especially where physical distancing is more difficult and where there is a risk of close contact with multiple people you do not usually meet. Examples include, traveling on public transport or entering a food shop where it is not always possible to maintain a 2 metre distance from another customer. There is no evidence to suggest there might be a benefit outdoors, unless in an unavoidable crowded situation, where there may be some benefit.

So wear one in shops where you can’t socially distance.

I had the virus A few months ago and recovered so don’t bother wearing a mask now. Lots of people don’t around here (London)

Cantata · 13/06/2020 21:35

You're very easily shocked then. Why don't I wear one? Simple, I don't want to

Same here, @PhilCornwall1

Laughing at the idea of Boden masks, though. How very Mumsnet.

Mum2jenny · 13/06/2020 21:51

If I must wear one in a supermarket, I’m not going. Simple!

Notwiththeseknees · 13/06/2020 21:53

Yes I do & I give zero fucks now if others don't like it. I'm doing it for the staff, the vulnerable and for me. Happily our area is relatively safe, however the huge influx of day trippers acting like complete fuckers means this virus is on a knife edge.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 13/06/2020 21:54

I mostly do, but was in Morrisons today and was one of only two people wearing one. Place was busy as well. I feel like a right twat tbh. Put my contact lenses in so I could actually see and not get fogged up. Masks are okay if you don't need to talk to anyone but they are a bugger for conversation at the counters.

It certainly is. 😷

Happynow001 · 14/06/2020 05:34

I do most of my shopping online now but when I am out at the shops I do wear one as (a) I'm in one of the vulnerable groups and (b) some of the shopkeepers where I shop don't wear masks and/or don't/can't Socially Distance.

I did feel silly initially but would rather that than fall ill and possibly end up on a ventilator.

Bluesheep8 · 14/06/2020 07:46

No.

Isn't it the case that a mask protects other people rather than the wearer?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/06/2020 07:53

No, I don't. I'd say only about 10% of people round here are wearing them.

theonlywayisapple · 14/06/2020 08:05

No. I won’t ever wear one

Ang3113 · 14/06/2020 08:07

I always wear one. You get some funny looks but I don't care

Yes, same here.

AuntieMarys · 14/06/2020 08:07

No. I don't possess one and have no intention of wearing one

user1497207191 · 14/06/2020 08:08

Yes, but it needs to become socially acceptable. The more who wear them, it becomes the norm, and then everyone will be safer, so by wearing one, it may encourage others to do the same.

KatherineJaneway · 14/06/2020 08:09

No, I don't wear one for the supermarket. I go shopping at quiet times so see very few people.

I did wear one yesterday as I was travelling on public transport for the first time in ages. Both buses and trains here have signs saying wear masks and it will be compulsory for the majority of people on the Tube from Monday.

@PhilCornwall1 - Boden facemasks

Do you wear a face covering at the supermarket?
hopsalong · 14/06/2020 08:14

No. To start with, I have a very snub nose with a large wobbly bit on the end and a mask presses it down, changing the shape of my nostrils to the point where I find it hard to breathe. I thought I was maybe just being paranoid about this but after using an oximeter to check my oxygen levels were definitely going down.

Secondly, I've already had covid (confirmed by antibody test, hence also owning the oximeter!). So while I accept that it may be possible to become reinfected in the future, I think I'm much less likely to pass it on than the average person. If I do get it again, I will also be able to recognise the symptoms more easily, I expect.

Endless11 · 14/06/2020 08:15

The people who won’t ever wear one - do you know for sure if you have the antibodies already? Why not do something which avoids infecting other people in places like a supermarket etc? Why am I bothering to wear a mask for other people if so many don’t give a shit about me? But will carry on as one of the reasons I do it is for the people at the till. Those of you who don’t wear a mask - do you think it is fair that the person at the till is exposed to hundreds of non mask wearers every day?

Thenextplateau · 14/06/2020 08:16

I used to, but it's only older people that wear them here so I stuck out like a sore thumb. I get socially anxious anyway and hate people starting at me. If it becomes more common I will do it again.

I used to work in an area where we wore them regularly, so it's not the masks themselves that bother me. It's peoples judgement.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 14/06/2020 08:16

Nope

Cam2020 · 14/06/2020 08:21

Nope. I've seen lots of people wearing them though and no-one bats an eyelid. If you really want to fit in, just pay no attention to SD. So many of the face mask wearers I've seem to think it's fair game to squeeze into spaces and stand too close if they're wearing a mask Grin

Endless11 · 14/06/2020 08:21

I also feel conspicuous when I wear one but enough other people are wearing one where I shop. Also if anybody wants to judge me they have obviously a. been living under a rock for the past three months and b. can quite frankly fuck off.

I look at Chinese and Japanese people in London who wear masks in such a matter of course and deadpan kind of way and take my example from them.

I don’t think a pandemic is the time to be self-conscious, though I understand because I am shy and normally hate standing out.

okiedokieme · 14/06/2020 08:27

No but I will take a scarf on the train, no intention of wearing it all the time if it's as quiet as last time because 5 hours is too long not to eat or drink.
