To think that Emma Watson is no feminist

So after JKR published her incredibly powerful essay and disclosed being a survivor of domestic abuse and sexual violence, Emma decides to tweet that trans women are women. Emma doesn’t condemn the misogynist abuse and threats of sexual violence that JKR has received, nor is she concerned about the facts JKR has shared of an over 4000% increase in girls being referred to gender clinics, or how autistic girls are disproportionately represented.

What is Emma’s “feminism” for exactly?

OP posts:
Doggodogington · 11/06/2020 19:58

Emma Watson, Eddie Redmayne and Daniel Radcliffe still riding on JKRs coat tails, all be it in a different way.

Dances · 11/06/2020 19:58

Nope

You don't get to redefine 'Feminism'

You don't get to redefine 'Woman'

They are already defined. They are already taken.

Invent another word to describe your regressive BS.

Fyette · 11/06/2020 20:07

This is laughable. I remember sharing here that I had been raped by a woman - when I was underage too - and all these "feminists" telling me basically to shut up, that I was "diluting the narrative" or that it wasn't rape without a penis so too bad, bye.

Those were to me fake feminists who do not give a * about other women and their experiences, not Emma Watson.

And J.K. Rowling's suggestion that those of us who accept transwomen as women have no experience with sexual violence: um what?

I condemn any threats of violence Rowling received after speaking her mind, but that doesn't mean she has a point.

BabyLlamaZen · 11/06/2020 20:09

What happened with the Paris Lees interview?

Dances · 11/06/2020 20:12

I'm wondering what your point is, except to have a go at 'feminists' - your quotes

Where in her essay does Rowling suggest that people who accept transwomen as women have no experience of sexual violence?

@PurpleHoodie

Emma Watson is most definitely a Menamist.

Indian and Pakistani rural villages have started to build separate toilet blocks so little girls don't get raped whilst taking a pee in mixed-sex locations.

A young girl was sexually assaulted in a UK supermarket womens toilet by a man saying he was a woman so it was his 'right to be there.'

Emma Watson is a Menamist because she wants boys and men to have access to these spaces.

She KNOWS girls will be sexually assaulted and preyed upon as a result - in increasing numbers. Because it is already happening all round the world.

She's a Menamist, not a Feminist.

A young girl was sexually assaulted in a UK supermarket womens toilet by a man saying he was a woman so it was his 'right to be there.'

I've not heard of that and a very quick google couldn't find the story, do you have a source?

Fyette · 11/06/2020 20:32

My point is that feminists who disagree with people like the topic starter get called handmaidens, femenists etc, and are told their experiences do not matter and there is no space for them in feminism, whereas all Emma Watson is doing is taking a different position in a really charged and complex debate, and suddenly she is insensitive, rude, and throwing women under the bus? That is laughable.

Fyette · 11/06/2020 20:35

@ShebaShimmyShake

I stand alongside the brave women and men, gay, straight and trans, who’re standing up for freedom of speech and thought, and for the rights and safety of some of the most vulnerable in our society: young gay kids, fragile teenagers, and women who’re reliant on and wish to retain their single sex spaces. Polls show those women are in the vast majority, and exclude only those privileged or lucky enough never to have come up against male violence or sexual assault, and who’ve never troubled to educate themselves on how prevalent it is.

SarahTancredi · 11/06/2020 20:39

There is plenty of space for all sorts of opinions in feminism. However they do all agree on one thing which is somewhat a vital point.

That a woman is a biological reality and not a gender identity. You simply cannot hold the the fact that babies are aborted before they are even born based purely on their sex as a thought along side believing men can also be women. You just can't. If you dont know what a woman is you cant be a feminist. Not even one who disagrees with another one.

Dances · 11/06/2020 20:41

Yes a woman who defends random males when her colleague talks about DV and sexual abuse is no feminist by any definition I know

But do let's make this all about you and your desire to kick some feminists, for reasons

Stompythedinosaur · 11/06/2020 20:42

I agree with this.

I too have not heard of this but if it's true do you really think the rapist wouln't have dared break the toilet laws and go in the "wrong" toilet given that he was prepared to rape a child. Also young boys have been raped by men in toilets too.

Lordamighty · 11/06/2020 20:48

Brilliant post TorkTorkBam

ATomeOfOnesOwn · 11/06/2020 20:50

and who’ve never troubled to educate themselves on how prevalent it is
you ignored this part of JK's essay despite it being very relevant. She is, admittedly, giving people the benefit of the doubt that if they knew how prevalent VAWG was then they'd care about it. It's fair to say that the response to her essay and to the violent threats she has received proves that there are lots of people who don't care at all and who can't see beyond their self-interest to empathise with victims of abuse.

Dances · 11/06/2020 20:51

Ugh

almondfinger · 11/06/2020 21:03

On a side note, I think it's unfair to dismiss celebrities' opinions. Just because they are involved in the entertainment industry, it shouldn't diminish their own views and opinions.

She's paid to act, I'm happy to hear her opinions on her craft. If I'm in hospital awaiting results of a biopsy, should I say 'hang on, can I get a second opinion from Emma Watson?

PurpleGhost · 11/06/2020 21:35

Transgender woman attacks 2 children in Morrisons toilets
The attackers name is Katie Dolatowski and this person was then sent to a female only hostel.

So should we just do away with single sex toilets and make them all mixed sex then? Let's just let all men into the ladies toilets because they are gonna rape us anyway so what can you do?

You misgendered Katie Dolatowski in your post by the way. Transphobe!

GuyFawkesDay · 11/06/2020 22:10

It's sort of funny really because Emma Watson is well known in the film industry for being not a very nice person to work with. Prickly, standoffish, rude......

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 11/06/2020 22:14

You misgendered Katie Dolatowski in your post by the way

I did think that

Frozenfan2019 · 11/06/2020 22:39

Well I was replying to a post which said it was a man claiming to be a woman but you're right I did misgender. You know the name of the person. I know literally.nothing about the person however have quickly googled now and they are clearly a horrific individual. Their gender is irrelevant. They are not more likely to be a rapist because they are transgender, I suppose that's my point. I also accept that there will be a tiny tiny minority who will claim to be transgender when they are not but I think this is true of any group and can't be avoided.

Emma Watson believes transwomen are women. She is a feminist because she believes women should have equal rights and be equal to men. The idea that she can't be a feminist because you don't agree with her about trans people is ludicrous. It's like saying I support Scotland remaining in the union because I believe it's better for women's rights and I am a feminist therefore Nicola Sturgeon cannot be a feminist. (It's clearly possible that you both have different opinions on what is better for female equality)
