To ask your actual waist measurement rather than what you think it is

I've just measured my waist and it's 34 inches. My jeans btw are size 32 so they are lying to me. And the NHS say I should have a waist measuring under 31.5" Blush What is yours ?

Just measured mine and it’s 27 inches. But I usually wear size 26 jeans.

CuppaZa · 08/06/2020 23:25

25 inches.

SuitedandBooted · 08/06/2020 23:26

Just on 27 inches. I've no idea what size that's supposed to be now. I'm in my fifties, and was a bit slimmer in my youth. A 26 inch waist would have been a bit snug in a 10, and was better as a size 12.

It's interesting to see that several PP's are a bit "wider" than their clothes label suggests. I've just had a look at the Next size chart. A size 6 is supposedly 25.5in waist. I've just bought a skirt from there. It actually measures 28 inches at the waist Confused

DamnYankee · 08/06/2020 23:27

25". Have a girl's rear end (35"), so really depends on the cut of the clothing.

joneseylu · 08/06/2020 23:30

I think about 23 inches. My jeans are 27 inches but they sit on my hips rather than waist and I doubt I'd get 23 inches over my arse. I normally wear dresses anyway. 3 kids, 5ft7 - I think I look okay so don't bother to weigh or measure myself much.

80sMum · 08/06/2020 23:32

My waist now measures 28.5 inches and I wear size 10 jeans. Forty years ago it was 23 inches and I wore size 10/12.

It's interesting how sizes have changed over the years. A few days ago I found a box of my old clothes in the loft. One of them was a maxi skirt that I wore when I was in my late teens. It's size 10. I tried it on: I could only just get it over my thighs and there was a gap of 6 inches between the button and the button-hole! My measurements now would have been a size 16 back in the '70s, I think.

relievedlady · 08/06/2020 23:32

Just did a rough measurement and mines 30 😳
I'm 5 for 2 in.

I've lost around 8 lbs recently as doing 16:8 which works well for me

Still got another 1.5 stone to go

relievedlady · 08/06/2020 23:33

I have also eaten a big meal for tea.

Il measure again in the morning when the bloats gone down

PhoneLock · 08/06/2020 23:42

A size 6 is supposedly 25.5in waist. I've just bought a skirt from there. It actually measures 28 inches at the waist confused

Would you wear it with the waistband around the narrowest part of your waist?

frenchfancy81 · 08/06/2020 23:44

Most of the answers say 20 something inches....loads around 24-26 inches.....that doesn't seem right. What do people think?

frenchfancy81 · 08/06/2020 23:46

Me again....26 inches being a UK size 6 or 8 depending on the shop?

jackstini · 08/06/2020 23:48

34" but jeans are a 32; I'm a size 12

ChubbyPigeon · 08/06/2020 23:58

Mines 27 inches. Hips 39, bust 35. Im a size 10-12 depending on where it sits but a 12 in jeans normally.

I think of it as 25inches, but that was years ago and I weighed about 3 stone less Grin

Incidently my thighs are now 25 inches. How can my thighs be nearly the same size as my waist? Sad

BrennieGirl · 08/06/2020 23:59

I must be a weird shape. My waist is 33 And my hips 37 (evening bloated size) and I’m a size 10/12.

mayandjuniper · 09/06/2020 00:01

I have always found this so weird. Mine is 32 today but I am quite bloated. It's usually about 30/31. My BMI is 21, I'm 5'5, run 5 times a week, and wear a size 10 in everything, and 28 jeans. When I was so underweight I looked ill it was still 27 inches. I don't get it! I am apple shaped but my waist doesn't look especially big by any means.

sleepyhead · 09/06/2020 00:04

It also makes a difference how tight you pull the tape (you shouldn't).

If you look at old photos of women being measured they really yanked it so that it dug in, which probably took of 4 inches or so (but obv also generally thinner).

Kljnmw3459 · 09/06/2020 00:05

33"!!!!!!!!

clary · 09/06/2020 00:07

See this proves beyond doubt that sizing has changed.

When I was 18 (1980s) my waist was 24 ins which was a size 10!

It's now 29 ins on a good day - which is still a 10-12 IME. Go figure.

Pinkbunny2811 · 09/06/2020 00:09

So I have 2 tape measures. One is 41 and the other is 33. I don't know which ones right until I find a real ruler or something but either way I knew I was chub. I do wear a size 10/12 though so who knows..

BrennieGirl · 09/06/2020 00:09

I just did the body fat calculator thing. It says I’m obese. I’m 5’3 and 10 stone so I’m right at the top of my ideal body weight for my height but not obese. I don’t think I trust those calculators.

Confused124 · 09/06/2020 00:14

This is going to probably be a seriously stupid question but how do they figure out clothes sizes well trousers etc , Confused my hips are a fair bit wider than my actual waist so were does my waist measurement come in if most my jeans sit across my hips??

Iv never thought of this before so I’m curious !!

PerfidiousAlbion · 09/06/2020 00:50

29” - it used to be 27”

I call it my ‘lockdown lard.’

MsVestibule · 09/06/2020 08:43

LOLing at Otterturk thinking that all us fatties with measurements into the 30s are measuring their hips by accident!!! Seriously - you must have noticed that most people are bigger than you?

I'm a size 14, 34G-35-39, slimmish legs and arms, BMI 25. So I just happen to carry all my fat around my waist. I'm constantly working on it as I know it's unhealthy, especially as I approach 50. Even when I was 2 stone lighter and had a BMI of 21, I was still lardy around my middle.

Purplesndteal · 09/06/2020 08:49

28in size 8-10. Happiest when it was 26 and a size 6.

riveted1 · 09/06/2020 08:58

24 inches 😁

I have fat thighs and very minimal boobs and it’s the one thing I’ve been happy with over the years!
