This is too important a discussion to give up on and as it looks like rumbling on for some time yet we need to be able to air our thoughts good or bad, vent, rage.
Whatever..because I think everyone will agree , no matter which side they are on
The current situation is shit.

That saliva test sounds good if it’s out there.
My ds wanted to take the presently available swab test for a work related incident.
He got the test delivered, however listen to this, it had to be administered the day before it was inked up.
Went to book the courier service , thinking it would be the day after he received the test.
No, the first pick up available, wait for it, was June 12
Needless to say, it was pointless him even bothering.

Yes a reliable quick test would be the key to getting back to some kind of normal. The saliva test is promising.

Dowser that's just crazy!

Alex50 · 07/06/2020 09:18

@alreadytaken the NHS has been shut down for a while for cancer treatment. The protests yesterday will just put the R rate up anyway, then more protests as people loose their jobs, the R rate doesn’t go down, the economy tanks, society breaks down. I think the virus will be the last thing we will be worrying about in a couple of months time.

EnlightenedOwl · 07/06/2020 09:34

@TabbyMumz

"Ok and how do we pay for this as we cower in our homes paralysed by fear?" Well in case you havent noticed, ths Government gas been paying out millions to keep peoples salaries topped up. And she is cowering, paralysed by fear? Think they need medical help if they are.
Where do you think that money is coming from?
InTheFamilyTree · 07/06/2020 10:19

@attackedbycritters
I read a report of research in the mainstream press in the last week or so. I googled it but can't find the article annoyingly.

InTheFamilyTree · 07/06/2020 10:22

Someone earlier said that lockdown was over - maybe for some, but for those lower down the economic pecking order restrictions continue.

No garden in which to meet friends, no car in which to travel to see family who don't live locally.

I havebt been more than a mile and a half radius from my house in the last 3 months and yes it feels like a prison

Kit19 · 07/06/2020 10:29

I think it would help if I knew what coming out of lockdown meant to people. My friend lives in Portugal & they are out of lockdown - more or less everything is open, you can travel & stay away but social distancing continues & masks are compulsory in shops

Would people be happy with that sort of end to lock down? Or when ppl say end to lockdown do they really mean forget social distancing too & go back to how things were?

I think it's a bit confusing to talk about 'ending lockdown' when many people are using it to mean 'restore normality'. At the same time, I think lickdown has become a synonym for 'utter fuck up by the government' which covers the wider situation. I'd see the ideal as the conditions you've described in Portugal. Keeping people at a physical distance doesn't bother me - I was doing it for a long time before covid came along.
BamboozledandBefuddled · 07/06/2020 10:39

Lockdown. Not lickdown Hmm That sounds like a weird fetish which is probably illegal under present circumstances Grin

Kit19 · 07/06/2020 10:42

I agree bamboozled

Until we can define what we really mean by ending lockdown we’ll just go round in circles

I’d love to get back to normal - I don’t drive so haven’t left my village since March or seen my family. I’m desperate to do both but I think realistically it’s a while off

Alex50 · 07/06/2020 10:45

End of lockdown for me is schools open and everyone back to work, hopefully I still have a job.

Oysterbabe · 07/06/2020 10:46

End of lockdown for me means schools and nurseries open as normal, able to meet and stay with family, all businesses open.
However I recognise that the fewer people you have physical contact with the better, so I think if people can work from home they should, social distancing in shops and out and about should be maintained. It would be a middle ground. Reducing the number of people you are in contact with but not preventing all contact.

mrshoho · 07/06/2020 10:48

Keeping people at a physical distance doesn't bother me - I was doing it for a long time before covid came along.

And that is what is preventing many industries from opening back up quickly. There has to be so much put in place to ensure customers and employees are able to maintain safe distances. Same with schools - they need to ensure physical distance just as you wish to do so.

Which could be done far more quickly if we reduced 2m to 1m which seems to be working perfectly well in other countries. That, plus appropriate face coverings for those who are able to wear them, and regular hand washing is really most of what's needed. The final thing that's needed is a massive increase in the standards of hygiene for many people and many properties but I've been wishing for that to happen for years.
mrshoho · 07/06/2020 11:02

I agree

attackedbycritters · 07/06/2020 13:25

1 m only works when levels are really low, which is what other countries have ensured before relaxing rules .

A distance of 2 meters for 15 mins is equivalent to 6 seconds at one meter

BamboozledandBefuddled · 07/06/2020 13:51

Current estimate is 5,600 new cases day - that means roughly 1 person in 1000 will be infected. Obviously the risk of being hospitalised or dying is even lower. If you're saying levels need to be lower still before we can open things up fully, you might as well say keep things as they are until the virus is eradicated.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 07/06/2020 13:53

Metre.

TooTiredTodayOk · 07/06/2020 14:11

I agree it needs to end.

The testing, track and trace system is a shambles.

The government are coming up with new rules and advice and guidance which quite frankly feels like it's just noise to fill the empty space in their daily briefings.

If masks/face coverings are now so important, why wait until 15th June to implement them? If quarantine after travelling into Britain is so important, why wait till 15th June to implement it?

I have no faith that they're going to spot check anyone quarantining after travelling, or quarantining because they've been contacted by track and trace. I have no intention of downloading the app - haha that's a joke in itself, that'll never come to fruition.

There's no sign of a vaccine, the nightingale hospitals have tumbleweed blowing around them, I have friends and family who work for the NHS who are twiddling their thumbs because their departments have all but completely closed.

I can't have my mum and dad over to sit in my house for half an hour but if I put my house up for sale I can have viewers come over and come in.

I'm done.

We're at the point where only roughly 1 in 1000 people will get infected, and the chances of needing hospital treatment is even lower than that. Without a vaccine this is as good as it's going to get.

I was in total agreement when the lockdown was announced and stuck by every rule, strictly.

But yes we do need it to end and start society again in a managed way.

Reduce the 2m to 1m, extend the wearing of masks as mandatory in some places and get people back to work and school.

I've been home for three months now, next week will be week 14 for me and I'm utterly fucking done.

Oblomov20 · 07/06/2020 15:40

I would have said yes. Before. But hadn't it just been suggested that because R is above 1, most UK schools, having only opened last week, are now going to close?

yomommasmomma · 07/06/2020 15:42

End of lockdown to me means, being able to travel to see my parents, elderly grandmother and brand new niece inside my parents house and stay the night. It also means school land childcare returning to a helpful level, so I don't have to do a full time job from home with 2 small children.

I literally don't care if I never step foot in another shop or restaurant again and will happily keep 2 meters away from everyone else forever if I can do the things mentioned above.
