Mulling this over as I look through job listings. I think for me it is enjoying fitness classes at different expensive studios, well pre covid it was. Not sure when we will be able to do that again! But I really enjoy it so much and it is definitely not an essential, I'm fortunate to be able to do so. We do live in an eye-wateringly expensive area so I guess that is partly a luxury, although we do need to live in this city for my partner's work.

What would you say is the most luxury aspect of your lifestyle?

Clothes for DS, too. I'm having to sell my current horse as our circumstances are changing (temporarily, but unfortunately can't justify keeping her through it), so then it will be clothes for me and DS. It makes me smile to see him dressed in beautiful, bright clothing, even if, as a baby, he doesn't really care, and I like to buy ethically made clothing for both of us.

underneaththeash · 06/06/2020 22:31

I like business class flight long haul - over 11hours and nice holidays.

Karmatime · 06/06/2020 22:31

Cashmere, so soft and cosy, I have other jumpers but never reach for them. I’m adding a new jumper or cardi (or two) to my collection each year.

momtoolliex · 06/06/2020 22:33

Traveling - I average around 5-8 countries a year. This year will only be 3 because of the virus and me giving birth next month, but next year will be back to normal travel-wise as long as a second wave doesn't affect it Smile

Thanks to everyone for the sympathy. To be honest, although I miss him horribly, I don't miss the worry. he was 29, went downhill so quickly at the end that the vet suspected a mass in his abdomen and he had a lovely last day. And trying to make all the arrangements in lockdown would have been so much harder.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 06/06/2020 22:34

Cleaners aren't a luxury really, neither are gardeners, if you have a house or garden that needs maintenance and you work (or even don't), then why is it a luxury to pay someone to do that?

You don't consider childcare a luxury do you?

HandsDownRoundTheTown · 06/06/2020 22:34

Scented candles

Beauty products and treatments

Taxis/Ubers

Coffees

I suppose they are all small things compared to horses and business class flights but they definitely made life more “luxurious” and I miss them now in lockdown. Tho my bank balance is healthier, my life is not richer.

Fruitflylady · 06/06/2020 22:35

Music lessons....I try not to think how much I spend on lessons for me and the kids, but it makes me happy.

technosausage · 06/06/2020 22:36

Cannabis Wink

Nacreous · 06/06/2020 22:36

My biggest extravagance by a good way is my cleaner. I ummed and ahhed for years about getting one as it seemed such a big expenditure to commit to. Once I got it set up, it was life changingly great. I have a job which sometimes/often means I work stupid hours. Pre-cleaner, during busy periods the house would get worse and worse. But I am forced to tidy it so the cleaner can clean it and then the cleaner stays on top of the cleaning.

Oceangirl82 · 06/06/2020 22:37

Our 45ft catamaran, bit of a problem atm, husband is locked down in Australia on the boat and I am locked down at home in Lincolnshire! Oh well best laid plans etc

derxa · 06/06/2020 22:37

My sheep. They cost me a fucking fortune but I can look at them all day.

krustykittens · 06/06/2020 22:38

Six ponies. Myself and my kids ride and compete native ponies. We have our own smallholding so they don't cost much to keep but the weekly lessons, arena hire and competition fees are eye watering. Lockdown has saved us a fortune!

Polkadotties · 06/06/2020 22:39

My horse.
Before lockdown I would get gels or acrylics every 3 weeks at just under £30. I now have a lamp and my own gels so won’t be doing that anymore

Pickles89 · 06/06/2020 22:42

Hmmm, tough one. I spend quite a lot on laptops, usually £1200ish every 2 years.

LettyBriggs · 06/06/2020 22:42

Holidays, I probably take 10 a year, a combination of family holidays and girls weekends.
On the other hand, I tend to shop for clothes in Zara/H&M, have zero interest in clothes.

RedToothBrush · 06/06/2020 22:42

Its different pre-lockdown and post-lockdown.

Pre-lockdown I'd have said holidays and pub, but in hindsight it was holidays, eating out, pub and crap bought from the supermarket.

Post-lockdown its gardening (was planning this before lockdown anyway as moved house in the last year) and homebrew.

Its focused my mind somewhat, and we are saving money.

Bleepbloopblarp · 06/06/2020 22:43

My holiday home. Which I now haven’t visited for 6 bloody months as we’re not allowed Angry.

Also expensive handbags!

notheragain4 · 06/06/2020 22:45

@dinglethedragon we are in the process of buying our forever home, I suspect we may need to downsize at some point for financial reasons, but I hope not and tbh one of the reasons I love it so much is that I can picture it being full of adults when the kids (hopefully) come back to visit us with their partners. It makes me sad that I'm not able to stay with my parents as their homes are too small now. I want to be that house like in the American films that can have big family gatherings and keep the kids' rooms as a memorial to their teenage years!

IndiaMay · 06/06/2020 22:46

Holidays (pre corona) were my indulgence. I basically never get my hair cut (twice a year tops) and have no other beauty treatments (do everything from home), have a second hand car, lidl shopping and bargain clothes but I have 5 holidays a year. A 2 week long haul somewhere sunny and interesting to explore like Antigua, 2 4-day city breaks in Europe like Dublin and Lisbon, a week short haul sun such as lanzarote or malta and then a weekend camping in england.

windmill26 · 06/06/2020 22:46

Holidays and cashmere sweaters.

Nottherealslimshady · 06/06/2020 22:50

Travelling. There is nothing that compares to being immersed in a different landscape with new wildlife for me.

DENMAN03 · 06/06/2020 22:52

My horses. I don't really spend a lot on anything else.

ScarfLadysBag · 06/06/2020 22:52

@ILikeyourHairyHands I have Pyjama Drama for me, occasionally a Harry Potter box as I'm a massive child, and a tea and vintage book sub, then for DD we get a Panda Crate, a Bakeful Play sub and a monthly box from Books & Pieces.

I also used to get one for my dog Blush

I just love getting stuff dropping through letterbox!

Wagsandclaws · 06/06/2020 22:52

My 3 horses dont cost that much, we are lucky enough to be able to keep them at home and we only do happy hacking so the rest of the time they just laze around eating. They live outdoors 24/7 as are hardy native types. They are expensive if anything goes wrong though.

I like relatively expensive handbags but only get them second hand so they are usually a quarter of the price new. My 5 dogs aren't cheap either as they are all insured with petplan and eat nice food.

I used to have not much money so I suppose these are real indulgences, it's easy to become used to this lifestyle but I never forget having a problem being able to afford mascara 15 short years ago. I'm very, very grateful.

I spend about 3k a year or so on facial aesthetics ( since I hit 45 - I'm 48 now ) so that's quite a lot too, no holidays though because of the animals.
