What is your biggest lifestyle indulgence?

Mulling this over as I look through job listings. I think for me it is enjoying fitness classes at different expensive studios, well pre covid it was. Not sure when we will be able to do that again! But I really enjoy it so much and it is definitely not an essential, I'm fortunate to be able to do so. We do live in an eye-wateringly expensive area so I guess that is partly a luxury, although we do need to live in this city for my partner's work.

What would you say is the most luxury aspect of your lifestyle?

Books. Trying to buy from local shop more rather than Amazon. I get through half a dozen a week.

Food. Luckily have DH who can spot good quality stuff marked down.

And plants. I swear all the nurseries have me on speed dial. Or their wretched postal lists. I grow from seed much of the time and try to keep local but then there's a lovely fern and I'm gone .... and I only have a small garden (and allotment).

Notusuallydown · 18/03/2021 19:57

What sort of tree? MaryIsA
I'm with you all the way on gardening, my back garden consists of heaps of soil and a moss lawn! I'm looking at trees- going to be a new luxury.

MaryIsA · 18/03/2021 20:29

A mountain ash, Joseph rock,
A magnolia
A Cornus contra versa vearigata
Amelanchier ballerina

And several acres....

Going to Glyndebourne in the summer. Life's just not the same without a healthy dose of opera, eveningwear picnics and sheep.

Lesssaideasymended · 19/03/2021 00:17

Holidays - not super luxurious but I always the kids to Orlando & it’s expensive (really its for me though)

Insert1x20p · 19/03/2021 00:55

PT twice a week (not UK so allowed) and a surf ski lesson once a week (that's a short term thing though as soon I'll be able to go out on my own). Then the luxury thing will be the surf ski itself (purchase and storage rental).

When going on a road trip holiday - more common now that we cannot holiday overseas as our borders remain closed - we hire a nice car. Partner and I (60s, grown up kids) have older but very reliable small economical cars that could do the trips. However, hiring a late model SUV provides more luggage room and definitely more comfort. Our last trip covered 2,500 kilometers over 9 days. It wouldn't have been as much fun in a Toyota Echo!
So I guess this choice is pretty self-indulgent but, hey ...

LApprentiSorcier · 20/03/2021 03:22

20 fags a day.

Devora13 · 21/03/2021 00:42

Mindful Chef.
And hubs decides he's going to buy himself stuff like s Raymond Weil watch or a Mont Blanc pen, goes off on bidding wars on eBay and ends up with multiples.
Although the latest is Triumph motorcycles and I shall not be impressed if he ends up with multiples of those.

My gym membership with swimming pool and spa included. Used to feel fabulous after relaxing in the steam room/jacuzzi after a workout and swim. I could spend 3+hours on a gym visit! God know when I’m going to be able to do that againSad.

blueshoes · 21/03/2021 00:59

Cosmetic surgery (a little one on a feature I was self-conscious about my whole life) and dental implant.

EntreMummy · 21/03/2021 20:57

Loved reading this thread.

It has definitely made me appreciate all the things I have and habitually spend on that I forget to see as luxuries (organic box delivery, books for me and DC, all the TV subscriptions, nice wine, make up etc)

Although I don’t have horses, yachts, pets or a fancy gym membership! (Or cars for that matter.)

We aim to live in an eco conscious way so try to shop for food locally, don’t buy imported flowers, try to avoid air travel and so our holiday travel is often expensive (but really fun) by train or boat.

But my main big indulgence has always been clothes. I have curbed my habit here in the last few years and now plan (most) purchases in advance and try to buy fewer, better quality items.
If I really feel the need to have a splurge I now go and play on eBay rather than high street 😊

lioncitygirl · 21/03/2021 20:58

Private school for the kids and one or two long distance holidays a year. I also am a make up hoarder. 😂

Kapalika · 21/03/2021 21:43

Elemis and Eve Lom.
We have 2 holiday properties but do Airbnb them.
Mainly it’s being able to take the kids away, normally city breaks. They’ve visited Belgrade, Barcelona, Berlin, Amsterdam in the past couple of years (well pre Covid)
I think one of our biggest expenditure (not extravagance) was to pay a professional advisor to guide us through the EHCP process for our son. I know people do it alone, but I just couldn’t get my head around it. She was hugely supportive too, but she cost a fortune!

BurbageBrook · 21/03/2021 21:50

I don't have loads of spare cash right now as I'm retraining at 30 but I still treat myself to nice fruits - berries etc - and a nice bottle of red wine every week. Plus, definitely budget travel once we are allowed. I don't care too much about 'stuff' but I'm all about experiences and enjoying life where I can.

Justcurious93 · 23/03/2021 06:52

Guitar lessons
Fab holidays 😁
Other than that I'm pretty frugal!

OldEvilOwl · 23/03/2021 07:51

It was my dog. Old, diabetic, on twice daily insulin injections. We had to have her put down just before Xmas aged 15. Nothing now really, Even managed to save a bit

Workyticket · 23/03/2021 07:56

'Only' working 4 days

Ds is at school so I could go back full time but I don't want to. I earn a wee bit more than dp so add the same as him to the pot (I know he'd like me to go back the 5th day)

It's definitely an extravagance but unless we suddenly become very skint I won't be giving it up

ReluctantEarlyRiser · 23/03/2021 15:01

Late to the thread but it's taken me 2 days to read through it!

I don't buy that much generally but I'm in the privileged position of being able to buy something if I fancy it.

Two parent family: husband works full time and I work 2.5 days. Neither of us earns loads, probably a pretty average wage. We inherited half a little ex council house which has allowed us to buy our home with relatively low mortgage repayments.

I shop at Aldi, we only have one, old car, usually go on UK caravan holidays, don't buy myself clothes very often but I will spend lots on presents and parties for my kids and I like them to have Clarks shoes and nice clothes. We also spent a lot on days out and meals out (usually weekly) pre-covid.

I get my hair cut and coloured every 6 weeks which is about £50 and I'm planning on starting botox which will be about £200 every 4 months I think.

Being able to go out with friends for a meal or drinks or spa day without worrying about the cost is a real luxury Smile
