Mulling this over as I look through job listings. I think for me it is enjoying fitness classes at different expensive studios, well pre covid it was. Not sure when we will be able to do that again! But I really enjoy it so much and it is definitely not an essential, I'm fortunate to be able to do so. We do live in an eye-wateringly expensive area so I guess that is partly a luxury, although we do need to live in this city for my partner's work.

What would you say is the most luxury aspect of your lifestyle?

@Dowser that’s only the tiny tip of the equine money iceberg believe me...but 100% worth it Grin

Getting my nails done.
DD is a competitive dancer, it’s a very expensive hobby.
We pay DD’s uni rent.

I’m so boringly frugal! Probably organic food. Considering private school for the kids so maybe that.

Just being nosey, how much does it cost to keep a horse?

mathanxiety · 17/03/2021 20:26

Books - I have far too many. In my defense, I do read a lot.
Fizzy water - it's just carbonated flavoured water but it's so much nicer than tap water here.
Cat - definitely a luxury but also a necessity in many ways.
Using a dryer - not really a luxury as hanging clothes out to dry is not done where I live, but it feels like it.
Vintage handbags - some I keep, some I recondition and sell.
Perfume - I wear some every day.

@Yourcatisnotsorry it can really be anything, depending on how they are kept, breeding and their ‘job’ amongst other things. I’d say for me, very roughly as you should NEVER do the sums, having 2 (dressage AM level plus fun ‘friend’) horses at home and keeping to a pretty decent standard averages about £1000 on a ‘good’/cheap month with no big bills. Was probably a bit more before I cleared the debt to get the set up built at home.

But for a racehorse on a training yard for example you’d be looking at more like that much per week per horse just for the training and livery fees never mind the rest.

In usual years it's holidays. Now the kids have left home we will spend a lot on an adventurous holiday. Only one biggie a year but still
This past year? Books. Loads of books.

Stovetopespresso · 17/03/2021 20:39

@mathanxiety why isn't hanging clothes done where u are?
I feel so guilty if I use the dryer, happens about once a month. I guess that makes it an luxury!!

VerbenaGirl · 17/03/2021 20:45

The occasional splurge at a Michelin starred restaurant. They have all been such memorable experiences.

WeirdArchitecture · 17/03/2021 20:47

food, environment (where I live), and that's about enough for me:)

Imnotdoingthis · 17/03/2021 20:49

@Stovetopespresso @mathanxiety Don’t have a dryer either, would so love one, but no one really has one where we are also

I can't answer as I was a child, but my family kept horses (we are not posh). whilst expensive generally (vets, equipment, smith, land rent or purchase) the biggest investment was TIME. We literally had no life outside of them. If you love them and want to go for it, it is very rewarding though.
Yourcatisnotsorry · 17/03/2021 20:50

Wow! Thank you. That is so much more than I expected. Is it mostly shoes, vets and food bills? I hope my little ones don’t take up an interest in riding!

Laufeythejust · 17/03/2021 20:54

Personal trainer twice a week. Expensive but keeps me on track with exercising and eating healthy. Been the main thing that’s got me through this lockdown.

HundredMilesAnHour · 17/03/2021 21:04

Personal trainer
Acupuncture / cupping
Physio
Good food - preferably local and organic

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/03/2021 21:06

Are you in the US, @mathanxiety?
My DSis who’s lived in Massachusetts for decades says that anyone hanging out washing there is seen as either poverty stricken or a lunatic - very likely both.
Though to be fair, their winters are very long and cold, and summer can be drippingly humid.

TakeMeToKernow · 17/03/2021 21:22

Spending on food and drink pre lockdown. But now it’s the new phone I got just yesterday! Oooooh. And we had a cleaner this week :)

Annoy · 17/03/2021 21:23

My bike... it’s free to go out on it but it cost me £5 grand and I love it! 🥰
