And it continues. Thank you for those black people who took the time to share their stories once again.

The OP cannot construct or deliver an argument, she only listens to her “ yes men/women”.
I mostly address the challenging posts, if anything.

Her delivery is appalling.
Perhaps. I'm tired of fighting.

Her example of a wheelchair user getting no reasonable adjustments made at work and the emphasis being on the employer is bullshit. In these types of cases we would work collaboratively and seek input from both medical experts and the employee to find out what they were finding difficult, what the hurdles were to them having a level playing field in the workplace. We would work together to create a set of adjustments that were reasonable.
Exactly. But this isn't being done for black people as is clear from this thread. What is so difficult to understand about that?
It has been hundreds of years and *black people still don't have a level playing field.

It is certainly not a case of the wheelchair user screaming “ you should fucking know what I need in every way, I’m not engaging with you or educating you”. Useless.

*Why not?
You think a wheelchair user should explain how to make an office accessible when there's nothing but stairs?

I will continue to support BAME issues but not because of the OP but because they are hugely important. I get the feeling OP really feels utter contempt for the so called homogeneous mass of white people ( y’know Jews, English, French, Welsh, Scots, Irish, Eastern European). When you can barely hide your venom funnily enough you fail to engage.
This isn't about BAME issues
This is about the BLACK ISSUES that WE FACE. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Joining with Worzel to agree so much with this:

@Dreep I take my hat off to you, you are clear and dignified in your approach. You’ve been treated appallingly.

I know if I was Dreep I wouldn't have 1/10 of the forbearance she has shown here.

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 16:25

I support BLM, I deplore any kind of racism, bigotry or prejudice. It doesn't matter to me why a person experiences prejudice, it's wrong.*

I agree. No one has condoning it. I'm just not discussing it on this thread.

OP posts:
PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 16:26

Hyperbolic statements like that aren't helpful at all.*

What is then?
Please tell me how I can prevent being killed for being black.
@hearhoovesthinkzebras

I hadn't read the full thread, nor did I understand your motives for posting. I do agree that care needs to be taken to base discussions off facts and recognise that the US has a specific problem with death by cop that the UK does not have.

I was just commenting on the data there and trying to make sure that people didn't simply think "well, black people are killed in custody in proportion with the amount they are taken into custody, so that's fine then." Which it's not, because we need to address why black people are taken into custody at the rate they are.
Because, as I understand it, that is based on the number of people in the population (as I understand it). So, based on the number of people in the whole population X% of black men dying would be in proportion with the percentage in the population. In reality it's double. However, when you look at the number of deaths in custody it's a different picture. This is because black men are over represented within the prison population. This is from the article

Of those arrested, 79% were white and 85% of those who died in custody were white.

Meanwhile, 9% of people arrested were black (which is disproportionally high) and 8% of those who died in custody were black.

So, over the last 10 years, a white individual who has been arrested was about 25% more likely to die in custody than a black individual who had been arrested.

Does that answer your question?

spinthebottle · 06/06/2020 16:27

Hi @PatricksRum.

I am black too and I’ve exhausted myself trying to debate. I’m TIRED. This whole thing is actually affecting my mental health and tomorrow I’m taking the day off my phone and I’m not engaging.

One thing I would like to say is we are telling people one thing and white people are saying BUT we can tell you “the police are killing us” and somewhere there is always a BUT.

If you are white and you have ever experienced any of the following (or if you would happily do so please let me know)
A security guard following you around a shop
People visibly moving or grabbing their handbags when you enter a crowded space
Being the only black person at a job opportunity and knowing full well you won’t get that job you’re their token black person
Being asked to stand in photos for college/school to show how diverse they are but actually treated like shit
As a child people wouldn’t hold hands with you as they told you you have poo on your hands
Speaking to someone on the phone and then when you meet in person they tell you they’re surprised you are black as you are so well spoken.
Being called very racist terms from primary school
The countless and countless threads on here asking if it’s okay to own a gollywog (it’s not.)

IF you would like to experience these things from basically the day you are old enough to realise you are different then please, be my guest. But I’m sure many, if not all would not.

There are many injustices in the world but this time we are focusing on us, the black lives. PLEASE let us have our moment. No more buts, no more excuses.

EarringsandLipstick · 06/06/2020 16:28

I'm not twisting anything. You are the one who said my title specifically invited white people to tell me their experiences of white prejudice (at least I think it was you)

Not me. Do check before you post?

Also, as asked on the last thread, get the * correct so you bold text properly & we can follow what parts of your posts are yours, what parts are quotes.

You say it's the app. It's not. * needs to be before & after every block of text. Doesn't work across a paragraph of text with spaces.

Is your life genuinely at risk every day OP?

Mittens030869 · 06/06/2020 16:28

I feel uncomfortable about hearing that a group who also experiences prejudice and discrimination on the basis of their ethnicity, Romany and Travellers, can just somehow 'deculture' themselves, and that this means they don't experience racism.

That's actually what I've done. I hide the fact that I'm half Czech after the bullying I went through as a child at school. My F was Czech and used to be accused of being a Russian spy. (It was during the Cold War.)

My DSis doesn't hide it and had negative comments during the 2016 Referendum.

But the thing that stands out is that I've been able to hide it because I'm white. That's where white privilege comes in. (Although Irish people and the travelling community are less able to do that, obviously. Or people with obviously foreign accents, like my F did.)

namechangegarden · 06/06/2020 16:28

Being Catholic, I went to school in London with a number of children from the Travelling community. I'm not suggesting that they all looked the same, however there were no visible features that marked them out as being from the Travelling community. The majority spoke with strong Irish accents, despite them not living there. That's why I said they wouldn't be treated differently unless they spoke.

Nellysdean mentions that she teaches children from the Travelling community, and also hasn't noticed a visible difference so perhaps she is also mistaken.

I'm not sure what the Travelling community has got to do with Black Lives Matter, but hey ho.

qweryuiop · 06/06/2020 16:30

@hearhoovesthinkzebras

I didn't ask a question. I'm not sure what question you think you were answering. I understand the data and what you explained.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 06/06/2020 16:30

@WokeUpSmeltTheCoffee

Sorry, I've just replied to your post but for some reason it's quoted a different post.

Basically, black people in custody aren't dying disproportionately when deaths are looked at as a percentage of the prison population.

Taken from the article.

EarringsandLipstick · 06/06/2020 16:32

This is our time. This is all about us. This is our moment.

No problem with this OP.

But to what end? Your moment for what? Of course, ending racism, prejudice, murder of black people by those with power. Of course.

But you don't expand to discuss any elements of this.

You don't have to - but you started the threads, lash out at everyone, share no experiences or suggestions and refuse engage in discussion and debate.

What is this achieving?

You've just answered 'tough' to me when I said I felt your suggestion of teaching me was patronising. Why is that an acceptable response to anyone?

worzelsnurzel123 · 06/06/2020 16:33

On your pointless wheelchair analogy it wouldn’t just be stairs though Would it? There would be areas that would need to be measured, desk heights, toilets, office door widths, smart board heights, many many aspects that would probably require some input from the employee. They live their life and understand the obstacles better than anyone. Obviously the measurements and bulk of change would be up to the employer but they would need a bit of dialogue. Folding your arms, pouting like a toddler and snarling “ not telling!” really doesn’t help!

EarringsandLipstick · 06/06/2020 16:34

OP

Please tell me how I can prevent being killed for being black.

Do you think you could share your experiences of such situations? That's a genuine question. I honestly would like to know more about your experiences.

GrumpyHoonMain · 06/06/2020 16:35

BLM is not about white people getting the odd racist comment while walking through a BAME area. It’s not even about the non-Black people of colour (of whom I am a member) or their issues. BLM is about BLACK lives, BLACK racism, HOW WE AS A SOCIETY TREAT BLACK PEOPLE.

Everybody needs to remember that in every country outside Africa Black people are often the worst discriminated against (and even in Africa white colonialist attitudes still discriminate against black people) even in countries that have anti-racism / discrimination laws. By shining a light on this and elevating the situation for black people we will improve everybody’s lives.

@spinthebottle

Thank you for your post. I'm so sorry for what you've experienced.

GrumpyHoonMain · 06/06/2020 16:38

@EarringsandLipstick - why not you use Google to research this yourself rather than asking a victim to explain her abuse. Thoughtless comments like yours really annoy me - it doesn’t take much effort for white people to research the impact of racism, instead many like to ask the token black / poc they know and then apply that to everyone of that race.

qweryuiop · 06/06/2020 16:39

@spinthebottle

That list is heartbreaking and recognisable. I have never had to experience any one of those things (white British), but I have seen them. I don't know what more I can do than challenge them when I see them.

I am not sure I completely follow the "this is our time" and similar comments, but respect your right to say and feel this.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 06/06/2020 16:40

You are the one who said my title specifically invited white people to tell me their experiences of white prejudice

This is AIBU on MN

Am I Being Unreasonable is a vehicle for debate. The op makes a statement, as you have "You're white you cannot experience racism" - Am I Being Unreasonable.

You have set up a debate BECAUSE of where you have posted.

You post a position and then the entire point of AIBU is that other posters either agree, or disagree, and post their arguments for or against.

Maybe you don't understand AIBU and it's modus operandi. Maybe you should have posted on one of the other boards that are designed to be for people to post their views, without the debate element.

But you posted in AIBU and so posters are responding.
