To book a UK holiday in August?

I can't decide. I want something to look forward to, and we've already paid (cottage in May cancelled). We'd be happy with the beach and walks and just being somewhere different, really. Is anyone else planning on going?

I had a week camping booked for June in north Norfolk. It was a tiny campsite (4 tents max, by the sea, no amenities)

Considering trawling the internet to find something for August. Couldn't transfer ☹️

InspectorCludo · 05/06/2020 16:43

Nah we’ve written this summer off. Won’t be going anywhere. Did you see the R has risen above 1 in two places in England? We are heading towards a stricter lockdown. I can’t see how anyone booking now could legitimately ask for a refund in August given what we currently know (unless it’s somewhere that is offering a booking guarantee).

We had a few nights in a Premier Inn in our local coastal town just before lockdown because I knew it would be the last trip we could take. I was with my teenage autistic son. Bars, restaurants and shops were shut but you could get takeaways and shop in the supermarket and eat in the hotel room if you wanted.

We had the most fantastic time. I think I’d enjoy it even more after being hemmed in at home and surely most of us have learned enough about risk assessment and health measures. We’ve had a lot of time to practice!

The hospitality sector may begin to reopen in early July so I’ve made bookings for mini trips away: within the county initially and then further afield. A complete change of scene and different four walls will be amazing

I'm not in the UK, am in Switzerland. They opened hotels a couple of weeks ago, and I went to the Alps last weekend (Monday was a public holiday). I really dithered over it, having hardly left the house apart from grocery shopping since early March - and worried about eating out, other people etc.
It was FANTASTIC. It made such a difference to my mental health, just to get away and be somewhere different for a few days. It felt like the best holiday I'd been on (although only two hours from home), the sense of freedom was great! The weather and scenery was amazing too, which always helps! The hotel had just reopened the day before we arrived and they were so welcoming and happy to be back in business.

Did you see that the ONS are saying infection rates have more than halved in a couple of weeks ?

Mintychoc1 · 05/06/2020 16:47

We’re currently still committed to Tenerife in July (was already fully paid), but if that was cancelled I’d definitely try and book a UK holiday. Sadly I think by the time our Tenerife holiday is cancelled, everywhere in UK will be booked up

FranklyDearIDontRiverdance · 05/06/2020 16:48

We’ve booked something in the SW for late August but we don’t have to pay until shortly before so if restrictions aren’t lifted we won’t lose out.

MorningNinja · 05/06/2020 16:48

We are holidaying in Cornwall late July. We will spend days walking and hopefully on the beach. Social distancing will not impact us as I intend to see as little of people as we can.

MynephewR · 05/06/2020 16:52

We've got Butlins booked for August and are planning on going as long as its open. Will be gutted if lots of the facilities are closed, hopefully most of them will be open but with social distancing, will still go either way, better than not having anything to look forward to.

Oops I posted too soon!

I loved your post and this is exactly how I know I will feel

cheeseismydownfall · 05/06/2020 16:58

We've got a week self-catering in the Peak District booked for the last week in July. We will take our own groceries, cook at home (a different home!) and go for walks (different walks!) and that is it. I don't have any expectations beyond that. If self-catering isn't given the go-ahead by July we will rebook for next year.

NoClarification · 05/06/2020 17:17

This thread is a relief to read. We also postponed a lakes self-catering cottage from may to August this year. It felt like a risk but I so hope we can go. Have no intention of doing anything except hike around the fells, so don't much mind what is and isn't open.

rookiemere · 05/06/2020 17:24

Mintychoc1 If you're looking for a lovely part of the UK which is strangely unpopular with tourists that you might be able to get a place last minute ,I'd highly recommend Shropshire. We're hopefully going in July if we can break through the Scottish border.

RunningKatie · 05/06/2020 17:24

We have a cottage in Norfolk booked too, had it booked since Christmas.
We would love to go, if it's safe to do so.
We essentially spend our time on the beach or on playgrounds so crossing fingers that it's possible.

Pebblexox · 05/06/2020 17:30

We've considered looking at booking a weekend away in Wales September/October time. Have a holiday booked to Tenerife for September, but honestly even if that went ahead I don't think I'd feel comfortable flying this year.
Still undecided what we should do, but also feel we need at least something to look forward to that isn't our holiday for next October.

jgjgjgjgjg · 05/06/2020 17:31

Haven have a corona guarantee so you can cancel if needed without any problems

BringPizza · 05/06/2020 17:32

We have a week in Cornwall mid August which we booked last year, and if like to go but if all the locals are just going to be hissing at outsiders then maybe not.

DH and I have taken a week in late July as well, and if the lockdown ban on overnight stays is lifted we're thinking of picking up a really remote cottage somewhere the kids & dog can run wild.

pastapestoparmesan · 05/06/2020 17:32

We’ve got a week booked in August. I don’t care if all we can do is see a different view!

HesterShaw1 · 05/06/2020 18:14

We are heading towards a stricter lockdown.

Where on earth did you get that from?

schoolsoutforcovid · 05/06/2020 18:20

Might've got it from some councils today reversing the opening of their schools. Already closing before they've opened

schoolsoutforcovid · 05/06/2020 18:21

Nice fake shockedness though Grin

Thurlow · 05/06/2020 18:22

Our holiday is already paid for with Cottages.com who has been really good so far about transferring the money to another booking. You've convinced me, I'm going to book somewhere. Just a different set of walls and some different walks and THE SEA will be amazing even if we can't do anything else!

OP posts:
Fluffybutter · 05/06/2020 18:31

I’d go for it. As long as it has a nice outdoor space and for me a hot tub , I’d be happy.
Still going to the US at the moment as nothing has been cancelled yet for August but we’ll see ...

underneaththeash · 05/06/2020 18:37

We've a weekend in Norfolk glamping, a week in Northumberland visiting MIL and a week at the end of Augsut in Cornwall.

@schoolsoutforcovid - why? The government just needs to force them to open.
