To be upset over chlorinated chicken and considering leaving the uk

398 replies

Lovesgood · 05/06/2020 09:17

I know a lot of people saw this coming. Its really upsetting how the uk is now beginning to bow down to our new masters. Im seriously considering to leave the country as chlorinated chicken will only be the beginning. They will completely ruin our farmers and foodstandards. And once theyve done that, who knows what else the US will demand, only for the UK to just roll over... Im quite sad over this actually. Any suggestions as to where to go? Whats Ireland like?

Just posted here for traffic.

Oh I see the Marie Antoinette brigade have come out with reinforcements now.

'Just buy organic from a first-class butcher who knows the exact provenance of all his cows! For goodness sake, don't you people have any sense at all?!'

SerendipityJane · 05/06/2020 16:31

Can't you just eat far less chicken (once a month?) and only eat organic?

Insect-filled chocolates

Luckily we gave up chocolate ages ago (not as a result of Cadburys, but around the time they were sold)

rat hair-infested noodles

We don't often have noodles. I guess you can make your own (although the source of the flour could be an issue)

and orange juice containing maggots

Much as we love fruit juice, the calories mean we rarely touch it now ... no great loss to us

“For example, US producers are allowed to include up to 30 insect fragments in a 100g jar of peanut butter; as well as 11 rodent hairs in a 25g container of paprika; or 3mg of mammalian excreta (typically rat or mouse excrement) per each pound of ginger.

Once again, we're not into peanut butter or ginger. Trying to think when we last used paprika Hmm

ofwarren · 05/06/2020 16:31

I CAN afford to buy organic but what about school meals and hospitals where you don't get a choice?

Bargainhuntbore · 05/06/2020 16:32

As others have mentioned. Buy local. Its really simple.

sminkipinki · 05/06/2020 16:34

Sometimes it just seems simple because you haven't actually thought about it.

WhatAWonderfulDay · 05/06/2020 16:35

For example, US producers are allowed to include up to 30 insect fragments in a 100g jar of peanut butter.... that's a LOT of insect in a little bit of peanut butter!! Shock

So relieved that you personally won’t be affected by the handful of examples a op gave, that’s absolutely brilliant news!

It’s going to be so funny when the poor are drinking maggot infected juice and feeding it to their children, who then go to school for their only hot meal and eat chlorine-washed chicken. Hooray for Britain!

ofwarren · 05/06/2020 16:36

Buy local when you are admitted hospital, in a care home, having a school meal?
Not everyone can do this!

WhatAWonderfulDay · 05/06/2020 16:36

SerendipityJane You're alright then, Jane Hmm

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 05/06/2020 16:37

Couldn't you just go vegetarian/vegan rather than emigrate?

Pumperthepumper · 05/06/2020 16:37

@Bargainhuntbore

If I was poor, I would simply make more money. Easy.
SerendipityJane · 05/06/2020 16:40

SerendipityJane You're alright then, Jane

I thought that was the whole point of Brexit ? Did I misunderstand ?

EasternDailyStress · 05/06/2020 16:41

Wouldn't have happened under Corbyn.

Just saying.

Pumperthepumper · 05/06/2020 16:42

Sorry @SerendipityJane I’ve just realised you were being sarcastic in your noodle post. Need to pay more attention to usernames Flowers

ofwarren · 05/06/2020 16:45

@EasternDailyStress
Agree
Just waiting for the "it would have been worse..." comments
Nothing could be worse than how this government has handled the pandemic or brexit. Failure after failure.

VickyEadieofThigh · 05/06/2020 16:53

Nothing could be worse than how this government has handled the pandemic or brexit. Failure after failure.

Correct. And I can't stand Corbyn, but there's no possibility a Labour govt would have presided over this torrent of shite.

TonTonMacoute · 05/06/2020 16:56

Are you for real OP? Really, you want to emigrate because of this? Get a grip FFS.

Everyone seems to have conveniently forgotten that fifteen years ago people were getting their knickers in a knot about chlorinated chicken because of the EU-US trade deal that was about to be signed (until Trump ditched it).

We are far too accepting of the food that is sold to us, remember the horse meat scandal of a few years ago?

Shop sensibly and prepare and cook your own food, it's really not rocket science.

TonTonMacoute · 05/06/2020 16:56

*five years ago, not fifteen

Lordfrontpaw · 05/06/2020 16:56

I’d advise your kids - if schools ever open - to eat veggie or take a packed lunch. And of you are in hospital, take sandwiches.

SerendipityJane · 05/06/2020 16:59

that's a LOT of insect in a little bit of peanut butter!!

Solves the mystery of crunchy peanut butter though.

ofwarren · 05/06/2020 16:59

@LordFrontPaw
Second to last time my child was in hospital was for 6 months...

dancingshoex · 05/06/2020 17:00

Related issue - their allergy labelling is not as good as ours (EU requirement). So it's not just about meat as done are saying.

SerendipityJane · 05/06/2020 17:01

Peanut butter sandwiches ?

sillysmiles · 05/06/2020 17:04

For those suggesting you shop locally....that's fine for some but for lower income household in cities who don't have car - their "local" shops are only going to stock crappy food.

Also British farmers will not survive when the market is flooded with cheaper (lower quality) food that the consumer can't tell isn't British.

ofwarren · 05/06/2020 17:04

@dancingshoex
I'm coeliac which can be a struggle anyway, so I wouldn't want to be vegetarian or vegan as what I eat is already restricted. The thought of the labels not being correct is awful and for those with dangerous allergies, terrifying.
I don't understand why people are saying, well don't eat it and change this and change that. We shouldn't have to as it shouldn't be happening!
We have one of the safest food standards in the world and it's being shit on.
