To be upset over chlorinated chicken and considering leaving the uk

398 replies

Lovesgood · 05/06/2020 09:17

I know a lot of people saw this coming. Its really upsetting how the uk is now beginning to bow down to our new masters. Im seriously considering to leave the country as chlorinated chicken will only be the beginning. They will completely ruin our farmers and foodstandards. And once theyve done that, who knows what else the US will demand, only for the UK to just roll over... Im quite sad over this actually. Any suggestions as to where to go? Whats Ireland like?

Just posted here for traffic.

I only buy local meat now, from my favourite farm shop . Ever since the scandal about Tesco's chicken, I'd never buy it there or at any other supermarket. They're all the same and it's only going to get worse 😐

dancingshoex · 05/06/2020 17:08

Yup, @ofwarren, mum of child at risk of anaphylaxis here. I recall reading that can terms like "seasonings" or "spices" can be used without having to declare allergens if not main ingredient.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 05/06/2020 17:08

Once upon a time the Independent newspaper (on actual paper) was a really excellent paper, genuinely independent with high quality journalism. Now the digital-only so-called 'Independent' is just clickbaitey right-on bollocks. I wouldn't trust anything they publish, it's so ridiculously one-sided.

SimplySteveRedux · 05/06/2020 17:11

During lockdown they've passed an Agricultural Bill that paves the way for chlorinated chicken, hormone injected beef and an overall lowering of our food standards. One of our most valued bastions, the clearly labelled "Country of Origin" will be removed so we will have no idea if we're buying UK-bred chicken breasts, or imported, heavily chlorinated crap from the States.

Which was why the link to the leaked discussions (never denied, by the way) was also posted. For the more discerning reader to have a variety of sources to rubbish post by post.

SerendipityJane Ahh! Got it... sorry!

Lordfrontpaw · 05/06/2020 17:17

@ofwarren that’s terrible - I hope they don’t need to go back.

Thesuzle · 05/06/2020 17:19

Signed. And pls all, Email your MP and the House of Lords

BiBabbles · 05/06/2020 17:28

For those going on about how cruelty-free a plant-based diet is, please read into how reliant many parts of the US farm industry is on a rotation of undocumented, unprotected workers, the conditions they live in, and has been shown even in recent years to include a significant portion of child labour. That will be part of any US-imported foods too. And that's before getting into the fuckery in a lot of other places or with particular foods - cashew harvesting burns, anyone?

I'm disgusted how many MPs voted against protecting British farming standards and our well-being. I wouldn't leave over it, most possible alternatives have their negatives as well, but it's not unreasonable to be upset at how things are going.

OliviaPopeRules · 05/06/2020 17:33

So you want to leave the country because of a US/UK trade agreement that is not yet even drafted, never mind signed and related to a policy no-one has actaully confirmed will happen. Sure go for it - makes perfect sense. Ireland is lovely.

Blackdoggotmytonguestill · 05/06/2020 17:34

Hmm. I mean, on the face of it, it’s a definitive lowering of standards. But out of interest, I googled and it turns out I’ve probably been eating it and feeding it to my kids for ten years and have been none the wiser. Genuinely didn’t know. And genuinely has had zero effect on any of us. No one has ever had food poisoning.
So. I’m a bit conflicted. It sounds dramatic. But turns out it hasn’t been, such that I had no idea. Confused

Blackdoggotmytonguestill · 05/06/2020 17:36

(Specifically about chicken. I buy local, which should be the default anyway, and am further confused by the obscuring of place of origin, which has been legally mandated forever in North America...)
Why would the UK want to obscure tracking from farm to fork?

Which newspaper do you feel offers unbiased reporting?

Nquartz · 05/06/2020 17:43

Shop local/go vegan/go vegtarian/read the labels to see origin is the new cancel the cheque

It's be funny if it wasn't so shit.

@SerendipityJane i use paprika a lot, I'll start stockpiling now 😞

SerendipityJane · 05/06/2020 17:46

I use paprika a lot, I'll start stockpiling now

I once bought a kilo of oregano only to discover that no matter how airtight you keep herbs and spices they do lose potency and flavour.

On the plus side, surely if the insects have been eating the paprika, they'll taste of it too ? So things aren't that bad, surely ?

What's going on here then?

We won’t be eating it, we’ve been sucking up to USA since ww2 and they’ve never let us forget it iether.

CoronelSuarez · 05/06/2020 19:15

There is no fucking animal welfare in ANY slaughter house in any country. Watch the first half hour of Dominion which shows 'high welfare,RSPCA approved methods. It's horrific and it is the standard used across the western world. They go in alive and come out chopped up and packaged, and we want to believe something humane and ethical happened along to way?

Disquieted1 · 05/06/2020 20:18

www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-29219843

UK welfare standards for chickens are higher than those in the EU.
I trust that the OP currently boycotts all chicken from other EU countries.

ofwarren · 05/06/2020 20:48

@Disquieted1 Whataboutery.
The EU don't sell chlorinated chicken.
Out of interest, do you think chlorinated chicken is fine to eat? Would you give it to your kids?

serendipityJane · 05/06/2020 20:52

They go in alive and come out chopped up and packaged, and we want to believe something humane and ethical happened along to way?

If you're going to eat meat (and there's no biological reason not to) then you have to be aware that at some point an animal will die for it. (Once they are dead I really have very little worry they are chopped up).

Which is not to excuse ill treatment and cruelty when alive (which is counter productive anyway).

Wishingstarr · 05/06/2020 21:08

People can organize and farmers and retailers can mark their food as compatible with EU standards. I am in the US and we buy all our meats from a local co-op that has lot of large branches (supermarkets) and can trace all meats (and dairy) to local farms. The co-op has foods standards that have to be met before they will purchase. We don't actually eat a lot of meat however. Our eggs and milk are delivered from a local dairy that is cruelty free. Lots of our neighbors have backyard chickens and don't usually buy eggs anyway.

Of course I agree with higher food standards and there is nothing to stop people organizing to demand it. You seem to think there isn't already a big market in the USA for hormone free meats etc. Our population is 330 million with 50 states. The states have different standards and their local markets can make different demands too.
