"Cinema is cheaper if you go more than once a month, but sadly I can't."

Tends to be the big ones who do that so you can only watch Hollywood movies, no arthouse, independent or foreign films usually.
Have I mentioned the cinema near me is only £4. I'd still rather go to the arts centre sometimes - they have discounts on Tuesdays and awkward times, but it's not clear they'll be able to re-open after lockdown.

Lego

cherrybath · 05/06/2020 17:34

Glass bottles and jars - expensive to buy empty but included in the price of food and drink. Plastic storage boxes.

Linz13 · 05/06/2020 17:36

Tampons! Sanitary towels and panty liners cost a bomb

Fowles94 · 05/06/2020 17:41

Perfume, I'd rather they weren't in fancy bottles or advertised by celebrities 🙄

Fowles94 · 05/06/2020 17:43

@cherrybath yes on the glass jars, in bulk they are still about 75p each, I can get jam for that much.

  • Concert tickets
  • Theatre tickets
  • Premier League football tickets

I can't understand why ordinary folk on ordinary wages aren't boycotting all of these events...

DagenhamRoundhouse · 05/06/2020 17:57

Glasses (the kind you wear). Huge profit margins for the oculists. All made in the same place too.

Monik3 · 05/06/2020 17:59

For glasses frames I used GOOGLES4U site, used a code from reviews and got 2 glases for the price of 1 and the lenses were free. It does take about 2-3 weeks because it comes from another country. And one of the frames were too wide and they told me to choose another model (with the same price I think) and sent it with at no extra cost and I could keep the one that was too wide and I fixed it. Very cheep frames.

Couldn't agree more with LakeTitty about flea/worm treatments for dogs. My dog had to have a Skype consultation because the vet hadn't seen him for more than six months. That's because he's well! Anyway, the cost of that and the flea/worm treatment they wouldn't prescribe without it, was £74.

ALbigbump · 05/06/2020 18:00

Air Jordan’s, good vegan mayo, Tom Ford perfume and console games particularly spring to mind

AdoptedBumpkin · 05/06/2020 18:02

Probably been mentioned, but walk-up train tickets. Some long distance journeys are more expensive than flights.

Scotland32 · 05/06/2020 18:03

@PolPotNoodle but is the Charlotte Tilbury worth it?! (I’ve been pondering it for ages!)

I agree with whomever said printer cartridges. Madness.

Many other things are expensive but not always inexplicably so. Cauliflowers for example - think of the inputs required to grow them...seeds, machinery to plant them, fertiliser, watering them, different machines to pick them, people on those machines to pick them, fuel for the machines, packaging, transport.... pretty cheap when you consider. Same with most food to be honest.

Pliudev · 05/06/2020 18:06

I might add the vet spent most of the consultation warning me against buying flea treatments from the supermarket and about the dangers of failing to worm my dog. Unnecessary since I was asking for both things. But if you haven't got £74 it would be tempting to try the supermarket brands.

OVienna · 05/06/2020 18:08

I have seen cauliflower for sale in the US for $4 per head.

Nearly47 · 05/06/2020 18:15

Blinds. Hundreds of pounds for a square bit of fabric with a cheap mechanism

Page8 · 05/06/2020 18:23

Vet's bills! More expensive than BUPA!

LoveBeingAMum555 · 05/06/2020 18:23

Vegetarian food in pubs and restaurants, just before lockdown I went for lunch with a friend. I had veggie burger, she had this huge chicken stack burger. Mine actually came on a smaller plate with less chips and it was the same price.

FelicisNox · 05/06/2020 18:23

Stationary...... £12 for a bloody calculator!

Bananabixfloof · 05/06/2020 18:25

@Tabitha005

Another vote for dishwasher tablets. WTF are they made from, palladium? They're ludicrously expensive. There MUST be a cheap alternative that does exactly the same thing, surely?
Yup, its washing powder in tablet form with brighteners. If you bought really really cheap washing powder and lobbed 2 tablespoons in your dishwasher that would do fine. Not so bright maybe but clean and it's all rinsed at the end anyway.
Celestine70 · 05/06/2020 18:26

Everything

wizzbangfizz · 05/06/2020 18:27

Lightly salted Doritos - 2 pound fucking 50.

Non branded ones just are not the same sadly.

JFM27 · 05/06/2020 18:28

Albigbump.I agree Tom Ford perfume is very expensive but Black orchid is so worth it,i only use for evenings and special occasions so it lasts me for ages.!

Mick15 · 05/06/2020 18:36

@malificent7 what’s an egg chair?? imagining a tiny dolls house chair with an egg sitting on it

TasteOfPatience · 05/06/2020 18:43

probable that these will have mixed opinion but
Micro scooters...my kids love there £20 catalogue ones, smart watches....why spend hundreds on a phone to answer from a watch that was just as expensive. On the lower price end but still expensive "branded" water, kid aimed foods like ellas kitchen...when I was a baby I ate what my parents are and I'm fine. X
