Anything 'ethnic' in a chain supermarket if I go to the Indian supermarket I can get a sack of basmati rice for the price of a packet in Tesco.

Ditto aubergine - 5 different types for 1/2 the price.

Cotton wool / cotton buds from the beauty isle, walk round to the baby section in the same supermarket and they are cheaper, even the own brand ones.

Alcohol free wine, it tasts crap as well. For a cheap bottle of plonk about 50% is tax, so alcohol free should start at about 1/2 price.

titnomatani · 05/06/2020 05:45

Wooden toys- even the crappy ones 😭

walkingchuckydoll · 05/06/2020 06:40

Diamonds, it's just a stone and a very boring one at that.

WilheminaVenable · 05/06/2020 06:50

Peperamis Hmm

topcat2014 · 05/06/2020 06:54

Any apple product

I thought technology was supposed to get cheaper

BikeRunSki · 05/06/2020 07:03

Bikinis and sandals, there’s hardly anything to them, but they seem to be much more than their “Full coverage” equivalents.

roombadoyourthing · 05/06/2020 07:45

Add braces to that. Mine were $2000 25 years ago. My ds' braces look exactly the same. Why are they $8000?

Livpool · 05/06/2020 07:56

@WaxOnFeckOff thanks - will give that a try!

CottonSock · 05/06/2020 08:15

Ocado :) my shopping seems to be double the weeks I do it there (not often).

Sun cream, the good stuff £20 a bottle

Lurpack
Lego
Stamps

Most supermarkets have an 'ethnic' aisle with different brands of spices, rice, chick peas etc at a fraction of the price of mainstream UK brands. Plus you can get ready chopped frozen garlic and ginger for about £1 for 400g - far cheaper than fresh.

For the person upthread who asked about piriton, it seems they've gone up a bit (it's a couple of years since we've bought them), but here are £18 for 500.

Moneysavingexpert has advice about saving money when buying hayfever remedies online. Plus lots of other things that people are complaining about the price of on this thread - in most cases, you don't have to pay as much as the price you are moaning about.

mommybear1 · 05/06/2020 10:44

@CottonSock try Aldi's sunscreen it's won awards and is less than £5 I really rate it.

HappyDinosaur · 05/06/2020 10:47

Decent taps, why are they so expensive?!

SerenDippitty · 05/06/2020 10:57

Boots’ own brand Soltan is also very good value for money. There’s no reason to pay loads for sunscreen unless you like some designer brand,

vickibee · 05/06/2020 11:01

Stainless steel is more expensive because of the chromium content. I was shocked at the price of nice taps

CottonSock · 05/06/2020 11:14

're Sun cream, should have said for a child with skin conditions

makingmammaries · 05/06/2020 11:19

This thread makes me nostalgic. If you think anything (except possibly wine meat and yoghurt) is overpriced in the UK, try shopping in France or better still Switzerland;)

Pinkkgaga · 05/06/2020 13:58

Five guys!

GrassyArea · 05/06/2020 14:08

@Pinkkgaga oh I agree! How can anyway pay £15 for burger and chips in a fast food environment? Baffling!

MiniMum97 · 05/06/2020 14:10

Yes agree m with butter. It's gone up by about 50/60% in a couple of years. It's made out of milk which hasn't gone up by that much in that time so why do bloody expensive!

anotheronebitesthecrust · 05/06/2020 14:29

Rent
Broadband - presently being gouged by my provider who aren’t allowing people to contact them and whose website has been experiencing very convenient technical difficulties for a few weeks
Meat alternatives and dairy-free milks, as they aren’t subsidised
Nice ice cream
Cauliflower
Watermelon
Macadamia nuts
Drain unblocker
Batteries
Contraceptives, especially condoms and the morning after pill

anotheronebitesthecrust · 05/06/2020 14:31

Bras if you’re anything over a DD and/or have a small band size and large cup size

vintagesewingmachine · 05/06/2020 14:36

@Cummingsandgoings I went to my local Lidl yesterday in the hope of getting soft light brown sugar (unsuccessful😥) but they did have 170g tubs of baking powder for 79p. I know not everyone has a Lidl or Aldi within reasonable distance but definitely worth a try if you can.

GreenLeafTurnip · 05/06/2020 14:57

Everyone struggling with fungal nail infections just paint the toenail with nail varnish and keep it covered for as long as it takes to go. I think mine took about 2 months and it's not a coincidence because I've had one 2 separate times on 2 separate feet!

jackparlabane · 05/06/2020 15:11

Days out or cinema - they're desperate to flog subscriptions so an annual pass isn't much more than one or two trips.

Loads of people I know who live near theme parks pay the annual fee as it's the same as two visits. Cinema is cheaper if you go more than once a month, but sadly I can't.

Even so, why is the cinema so expensive? It means it's usually empty whenever I do go, except for half a dozen people feeling ripped off.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 05/06/2020 16:08

Antihistamine users:

You can pay £4-5 for 7 days of branded tablets at Boots

You can also get own-label tablets there for around £3 for 30 days.

Or go online and buy generic label in bulk.

I take them 365 days a year, so tend to buy 12-18months at a time and it costs me £10-15 tops. Exactly the same active ingredient as the £££ ones.

If you buy early in the year (or in Autumn), there's usually great stock availability and the lowest price (69p for 30 tablets is not uncommon)
