That is worse than childbirth?

Just trying to ease my anxieties over giving birth, due this week!

I hate the unknown and not having a client what level of pain to expect. I know every labour is different but I cant sleep and thought I'd ask!

Slipped disc - needed an emergency prescription of morphine to even think about being able to move. Thank goodness my husband was in the country to collect it. 3 hours in bed unable to move.

Hollywhiskey · 01/06/2020 16:15

Migraine, dental pain, grief, in fact even that time I sprained my shoulder swimming too far was worse.
I've had two natural births with gas and air and meptid on the first one. I'm lucky in that i labour relatively quickly. The thing that makes labour hard, in my experience, is how tired you get. So my top tip for coping is don't do what I did first time round and spend the last month of pregnancy walking miles, having sex, bouncing on ball etc in a desperate attempt to get into labour. Rest up and eat really well. Google carb loading and do that when you start having contractions. Pack loads of snacks and drinks like lucozade for your bag and tell your partner to feed you them. Pick stuff you can stomach when you've lost your appetite.
Also we are very fortunate to live in a developed country in the 21st century. So generally we have access to good quality pain relief which you should absolutely ask for if you need it.

ImFree2doasiwant · 01/06/2020 16:17

Head injury. My second child was 10lb 13, back to back, 2 lots of forceps, episiotomy. Still not a patch on the quite minor head injury.

hammeringinmyhead · 01/06/2020 16:18

Kidney infection. So bad I hallucinated for days.

I had a 3 hour labour with gas and air, but DS was only wee at 5lb8oz.

princesspap · 01/06/2020 16:18

I have a high pain threshold but Appendicitis - was on my hands and knees with the pain it was so intense

Hannah9176 · 01/06/2020 16:23

Going to go against a lot of these and say childbirth wasn't horrendous for me. It hurt but absolutely nowhere near how people describe and was absolutely bearable. I did have a quick labour though, but only pain relief I had was gas & air for the last 30 mins.

Quarantimespringclean · 01/06/2020 16:23

Dental abscess is the worst pain I’ve ever had.

My first birth was scary rather than painful. It was protracted and in hospital with lots of strangers around which makes me very tense.

Second (home) birth was a genuinely pleasurable experience.

ITonyah · 01/06/2020 16:24

I considered taking an overdose with my tooth abscess Shock

Grasspigeons · 01/06/2020 16:26

Dental gum infection and severe cellulitis. Partly because they made me feel ill too and i was frightened of sepsis.

BurtonHouse · 01/06/2020 16:31

I've had root canal where the anaesthetic didn't work and childbirth twice, but the first pain by an infinity was trigeminal neuralgia. Twenty minutes of that and I was straight down to A&E and copious amounts of morphine. I hope never to experience it again

PuntoEBasta · 01/06/2020 16:32

The pain of childbirth has a purpose and it is finite. Every contraction brings you closer to meeting your baby. Good luck - and remember that nobody hands out medals for giving birth in any particular way, so take the pain relief on offer if you need or want it!

Mayhemmumma · 01/06/2020 16:33

Dental pain defintely.
One of my births hurt very briefly but very intensely, the other was longer but much more of a manageable discomfort.

doughnutmuffin · 01/06/2020 16:35

I was tongue tied and had it cut, the pain lasted a month and I remember crying on the sofa.
Childbirth was painful but worth it and I look back at it with fond memories

LittlePearl · 01/06/2020 16:36

Sciatica
Gallstones
Infected gallbladder
Tooth abscess

Gallbladder now gone but I dread having the others again.

Mummyme87 · 01/06/2020 16:37

Childbirth is horrifically painful. However I cannot compare others to any other pain. I know it was bad, but can’t quite remember how bad... bad enough for me to need an epidural both times which I absolutely did not want at all

Missillusioned · 01/06/2020 16:39

Broken bones are much worse. And they go on for days rather than hours

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 01/06/2020 16:41

Personally, no. Sorry, I know that’s not what you want to hear. I had a particularly traumatic 40 hour labour and birth and my epidural didn’t work though. Pethidine was the lifesaver that let me get some sleep, even though I’d been completely opposed to it beforehand. My only advice would be don’t be too inflexible about a pre-determined birth plan. Neither your baby nor your body got the memo about it!

Pleasenodont · 01/06/2020 16:41

No. The contractions are honestly bearable IF you have gaps between them. I had one ‘normal’ birth with the usual few minutes between each contraction but two back to back births with constant contractions- they were Hell. The pushing part is horrible, it feels like you’re pooing out a bowling ball and it just burns like nothing else. Huge relief when it’s all over though.

SamsMumsCateracts · 01/06/2020 16:41

40cm long spinal fusion, with two ribs removed and rods/screws inserted. Childbirth was a breeze compared to that. Even my csection for DS2 seemed easy, two paracetamol on the day, no pain relief from then on. My theory is that after experiencing what my spinal surgeon described as the "most painful operation and recovery anyone can experience", my pain threshold increased massively.

Pleasenodont · 01/06/2020 16:42

Should say I had a c-section with DC4 and it was amazing, I wish I’d had one with all of them.

AnnaSW1 · 01/06/2020 16:43

I really don't find childbirth any worse than other pain. I sliced my cornea once that was much more painful. So was dental pain when I needed a root canal.

Thirtyrock39 · 01/06/2020 16:44

Breaking my finger was far worse than any of my three labours
For me the pushing part (lasted about an hour) of Labour was v intense and yes painful but the majority of it building up to that part was like bad period pains and manageable

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 01/06/2020 16:47

A colonoscopy is worse than childbirth.

I have Crohn's disease if I have to have a colonoscopy while in a flare I insist on being sedated.

The pain is excrutiating.

I didn't have any pain relief during childbirth and it only took two pushes.

I wouldn't do either again if I didn't have to 😁

AveAtqueVale · 01/06/2020 16:48

Gallstones - absolute bloody agony. Would categorically have either of my labours rather than gallstone pain again.

Also one particular episode of tonsillitis - I get it all the time and generally manage fine with paracetamol and painkillers, but for some reason that time it felt like someone was constantly scraping a razor blade up and down my throat. I couldn't swallow anything at all, even breathing was agony, and absolutely nothing helped the pain for two bloody days until a GP gave me some morphine.

Labour's manageable- it hurts like buggery but you know why it hurts, and you know it's definitely got to stop at some point.

Chocolateandamaretto · 01/06/2020 17:25

Honestly labour was mostly ok. I did find the “ring of fire” hard but I knew that was nearly it so that got me through. I never had any pain relief for any of my labours, not because I’m a martyr but because I genuinely didn’t really need it. I do have fairly short labours though (think 3-5 hours ish) so I might say different if it had been 40 hours!

Honestly kidney infection was worse.
