Mumsnet etiquette

maxonebitch · 29/05/2020 10:45

What do you think is important MN etiquette? Does it have one?

OP posts:
Elouera · 29/05/2020 12:30

Always search for the question or topic beforehand, and also check for the most recent replies. As others have said, there might be 10 threads about the exact same topic you want to start today and it gets bloody tiresome.

Remember that the audience aren't always English or British. I'm unsure why people use obscure, or little known local terms or phrases and assume the whole community knows what it means?

OhhhPeee · 29/05/2020 12:31

Have you considered Netmums, hun?

TanteRose · 29/05/2020 12:31

Grab I can see the paragraphs - comprehensive post of etiquette there Flowers

ProsperTheBear · 29/05/2020 12:32

You MUST be a feminist to be on MN.

but...
it means you mustn't be in a relationship because you'd have no freedom, no happiness and you will become someone's slave with the mental load the size of Texas

and it absolutely mean you mustn't be a SAH parent

ProsperTheBear · 29/05/2020 12:34

When you have young children, you must hate, laugh at and avoid completely:

the school run
the school playground
other parents
any class group
the PTA

because they are so below you.

Clevererthanyou · 29/05/2020 12:40

You must be a size 6 as anything above this is clinically obese and a burden on the NHS.
All posts about parking require a photograph or well constructed diagram. You MUST confront the parking wanker and let us know how it went within minutes as we’re all mums with kids to feed dontchaknow.
You must be completely woke and happy to allow your rights to be trampled on in the name of inclusivity or you can expect death threats and name calling.

Sparklfairy · 29/05/2020 12:46

If you don't immediately LTB as instructed by strangers on the internet then you are a troll.

2bazookas · 29/05/2020 12:49

Please leave that huge chip on your shoulder on the woodstack outside. You can take it home later.

ChicCroissant · 29/05/2020 12:54

Bear in mind that you are only ever getting one side of the story* and that is likely to be written in the poster's favour.

*and if you get the other side of the story appearing on the thread it's likely to be a sock puppet which is the OP themselves.

PlantPottingPlantPotting · 29/05/2020 12:59

People that pull apart grammar, because their opinion is worth more than yours based on the fact they have used correct grammar spelling etc. Dickheads Grin

It’s the sea of posters all disagreeing with the OP and then suddenly one poster will appear with a suspiciously similar writing style to the OP and agree with them wholeheartedly and wonder why everyone else is being so mean!
EmpressLangClegInChair · 29/05/2020 13:00

Any female older than 18 is a woman.

I thought I’d be a bit flexible. But yes, totally fine with that!

JaneJeffer · 29/05/2020 13:01

Ask the OP "what is your AIBU?" when they post something which should be in Chat.

OP what is your AIBU?

ProsperTheBear · 29/05/2020 13:02

Don't @ people who are already on the thread

sorry I don't understand that point?

Viviennemary · 29/05/2020 13:07

You must be in either of two clubs..

The DH earns 250k a year club and will you have enough to live on if you stop working as you will only have 5K left at the end of the month for extras such as coffees.

Or the so poor club you can't afford a loaf of bread never mind your rent.

There is nothing in between.

Neither do I.

I sometimes @ people so that it is clear who I am responding to.
Why would you @ someone who isn't on the thread?

SecretSpAD · 29/05/2020 13:09

I must be hated. Exclusively shop at Asda and Tesco and live in a 3 bed in the SW

Don't worry. I beat you. We have a second home in the SW (in which we have been living since Christmas) and a flat in London Wink

thefuriousfuggler · 29/05/2020 13:11

If there is a post about something which is just a bit different from the usual, run-of-the-mill MIL/wedding/school run/neighbours stuff, make sure that you start an almost identical thread as soon as possible and if anybody mentions it just claim that you didn't see the others.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 29/05/2020 13:11

Etiquette is a crock, no matter where it exists. It's boring, unimaginative conformism to the nth degree.

Good manners are not the same thing at all (in fact, etiquette is often anything but). And sometimes, rude is good.

I've no idea whether the stupid biscuit icon and that everlasting strikethrough people persist in throwing into their posts are forms of 'Munsnetiquette'. Whatever they are, they're very fucking annoying.

That is unacceptable behaviour and you must stop immediately! Wink

Strikethroughs are annoying

Have a Biscuit

SnugglySnerd · 29/05/2020 13:16

Your daughter must not like or wear anything pink. Your son must love his pink, glittery princess dress and insist on wearing it everywhere.

ProsperTheBear · 29/05/2020 13:18

you mean DEtiquette Biscuit

bad etiquette: starting a thread and disappearing

VirginWestCoast · 29/05/2020 13:19

I think @OhhhPeee has nailed it there. MNers seem to exist in a world of extremes. Some will insist that they don't know how anyone could subsist on an income of just 70k a year, none of their friends earn less than 100k.
Others have £3.50 to last them until the end of the week and you are a certified urban elitist if you do not agree that this is, in fact, the case for the majority of the UK.

You somehow end up feeling inadequate AND guilty simultaneously. Which is shit but I can't get that sort of treatment anywhere else Grin
