...to wonder why these dresses are so sought after?

The dress I'm talking about is the Mill Pool dress, by a brand called Seasalt.

Trying to find a couple of nice summer dresses on eBay. Stumbled across the above dress and liked the look of it (a stripey version; the floral one isn't quite my taste). Placed a bid and was outbid by a mile by about 30 other bidders! This has happened a few times now. They sell for so much money and I'm not sure why?

Probably not an AIBU but I'm curious if anyone knows why these dresses are so sought after? It seems crazy!

With all the lockdown sitting around at home and in the garden I would have thought that those Seasalt dresses would be perfect, nice and loose and comfy and a handy pocket, though there would be the temptation to eat too much as they are so flowing and could lead to a nasty shock when one comes to put ones jeans back on.

Comefromaway · 30/05/2020 20:28

It looks dreadful on me but I’d not heard of Seasalt but a Different style dress Of theirs caught my eye in a shop window last year and I bought it. It’s lovely quality, so flattering and I wear it all the time and always gets compliments.

mammmamia · 30/05/2020 20:57

Awful dress! I can’t understand this at all I’d never wear that but each to their own.

MoreSchnitzelPlease · 30/05/2020 21:05

I really like Seasalt, I own a lot of their dresses and a few rain coats. It's a great brand with a good ethos, and they make clothes that last.

Sophiafour · 30/05/2020 21:05

When dresses, shoes, etc "suddenly" become popular and "sought after" and haven't been filmed when, say, the Duchess of Cambridge was wearing them, or featured in a recent TV series, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the companies concerned have either sent freebies or have paid for product placement somewhere. You see it all the time in films. I'm not accusing Seasalt directly, in general they're one of the more ethical brands, I believe, but this is effectively at least some of what Daily Mail fashion journalists and the rest get paid for. Well done, though, OP- you got me to click on ebay to check what's going on before I finished this post (not because I want one, as it would make me look like a sack of dumpy potatoes, but just to get my facts straight), and at the moment there are plenty on there.

Aworldofmyown · 30/05/2020 21:08

On a side note I have two Seasalt raincoats, they are bloody fantastic!!

gavisconismyfriend · 30/05/2020 21:12

Seasalt are a great brand. Well made, long lasting clothes and lovely customer service. I buy dresses in multiples as they sell out quickly!

Lockheart · 30/05/2020 21:21

I hear good things about Seasalt but that dress does look a bit shapeless and the colours / patterns seem kind of generic and same-y... Not to my taste personally but I prefer bold colours and prints on longer dresses so I don't think I'm the target market!

mathanxiety · 30/05/2020 21:22

It's exactly the sort of shape of dress you can safely buy online without trying on first.

Pickles89 · 30/05/2020 21:30

@TrickyD I love orangutans so had a look at their rainforest T shirt. What in the name of heck are kolas doing mixed in with the orangutans? No no no no NO!!

Comefromaway · 30/05/2020 21:41

This is my favourite dress ever. If someone can tell me what the name of the style is so I can order more I’d love it.

Itsjustmee · 30/05/2020 21:43

I think it’s vile and not at all flattering. its just a patterned sack
But each to there own

LittleMissMe99 · 30/05/2020 22:02

Comfortable but it looks like you're wearing a sack.

pilates · 30/05/2020 22:08

Frumpy and not very flattering

lljkk · 30/05/2020 22:19

It's rare I use this word, but "Seasalt dress"... almost every single one on google images is a celebration in frumpiness. This is the only one I've found so far that is truly nice. Just when I thought MN couldn't surprise me.

I'm a complete scruffbag (WFH is cementing that) so I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

It totally does! As for the “it looks better on!” - um no. Even the catalogue models wearing it look frumpy and as if they have no shape. If it makes professional models look bad then I’m not convinced it’s going to flatter the average woman.

Nomorewineever · 30/05/2020 23:13

@Catcrazy008 if it’s a 14 message me!!!!!

As for the disparaging comments about frumpy, shapeless and unflattering.... Yep that’s me! I’m a weird shaped (nothing needs ‘enhancing’ thanks) I’m lumpy and bumpy and massive of tit. I’ve tried every single shape and variety of dress going - believe me - Linen shifts make me look like a fat rectangle, wrap dresses make me look like I’m poured into them, tiered and maxi dresses are the work of the devil (at 5ft 2 maxi dresses are a weapon of death, how I’ve not broken my neck in one yet is a miracle) most dresses generally make me look wider than taller and that’s saying something. This ‘swing’ with pockets shape is the best. I buy smaller, they don’t drown me, they are airy and cool and practical.

And yes I do think they look awful on the willowy models. These are dresses for un model-esque people. It’s the one time I’d be inclined to say they look better on a regular sized woman than a model sized one.

Atthebottomofthegarden · 30/05/2020 23:16

I like Seasalt a lot, although that particular style doesn’t do it for me.

In fact I placed a large order a couple of weeks ago, planning to keep a couple of items and send the rest back. Oops... 😊

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 30/05/2020 23:32

I'm not a big fan of dresses, but there was a couple I would wear, if they were a bit less sack like.

I looked at the size guide, and was terribly impressed with the questions they ask you, in order to work out your size.

They then give you a percentage of people with your dimensions who ended up returning the dress in the size they have guessed. Like I said, I was terribly impressed! Particularly for something sack sized 😁

Lovely13 · 30/05/2020 23:46

I have two seasalt dresses, which I am happy with. Also some tops. All organic cotton which has to be good. Also have a waterproof coat. Which my young adult son said he would wear!

copperoliver · 31/05/2020 00:08

Hi I have a few of these and they are just so comfy and easy to wear I think that's why they sell so well. They sell them on sea salt all year around. Long sleeve for autumn/spring and short sleeve for the summer.
Personally I only like the short sleeve. X

lljkk · 31/05/2020 06:30

@Apocalyptichorsewoman, what size guide? I searched thread but don't see.

It's exactly the same mismatched size for me on this as for every other brand, tbh. 14/16 up top & 10/12 on bottom. I'm a perfect hourglass so SeaSalt cater for pears, like every clothing manufacturer.

Squirrelwithaflute · 31/05/2020 10:39

The quality is lovely although probably wouldn't wear that particular dress....the seasalt factory is 2 mins from my house...yes I live in Cornwall Smile

TeaAndBiscuitsAndWine · 31/05/2020 11:45

I actually really like Seasalt clothes. Unusually, and as mentioned by other posters, they look better on ‘normal’ sized and shaped people than on the skinny models! They use organic cotton, don’t skimp on the cut, and offer sizes in ‘tall’ and ‘petite’ (i.e. short) as well as ‘regular. The comments on the website are always really useful, women saying how the item worked on them with a brief detail of their own size and shape, so one can easily figure out if it only works on ladies with busty/flat chested shapes for instance. The colours look a lot better IRL than online too. Plus they wash and wear well. The one exception is wool jumpers. All the wool jumpers I’ve bought from there have bobbled to heck in no time at all, it’s weird!

TheFaerieQueene · 31/05/2020 12:22

That dress Is hideous and a quick look at the website shows me enough to know that I won’t be shopping there. I don’t mind the price and support their ethical position and locally produced clothes, but virtue doesn’t mean wearing sack style clothes.
