AIBU?

...to wonder why these dresses are so sought after?

The dress I'm talking about is the Mill Pool dress, by a brand called Seasalt.

Trying to find a couple of nice summer dresses on eBay. Stumbled across the above dress and liked the look of it (a stripey version; the floral one isn't quite my taste). Placed a bid and was outbid by a mile by about 30 other bidders! This has happened a few times now. They sell for so much money and I'm not sure why?

Probably not an AIBU but I'm curious if anyone knows why these dresses are so sought after? It seems crazy!

they are shapeless. Thats the beauty. Even people who like something more shaped, are going to have days where you just want to put something on that is a bit more of a cover up surely?

I love Sea Salt. The quality is really good, I've got jeans that are now 4 years old and still look as though they are just about worn in. And my Jonelle coat is the warmest, most waterproof, practical coat I have ever owned, and came with a lifetime guarantee! However, I was in Waitrose not long before lockdown and every other woman in there was wearing the same coat - they clearly go down well with the Waitrose demographic. Grin

Most of their dresses aren't the right shape for me. The waist (when they have one) is too high, and they make my hips look big. It may be because I'm top heavy, so they're too big on the hips, but I'd have thought that would make my hips look smaller, not bigger.

The "sack" dresses look fine on me, and not at all sack-like when they're on.

The radish dress is super cute!
As pp said not everyday is a fitted, structured outfit day. I dont care whether the world can see my body shape or bust waist to hip ratios. I care that im comfortable and like what im wearing.
So called shapeless sacs skim over curves and are very comfy and practical. Whats wrong with that?

Never bought anything from Seasalt but this thread has lead me to order a Stippling dress and a Carvel dress for the summer. Hope they don’t look too frumpy.

Slim waist and fat legs here, that dress would do me no favours at all. But then no one designs dresses for pear shaped women.

ooh just googled it - it's quite a nice dress! I think I can see why it's sought after.

I was so annoyed when Seasalt stopped making kid's clothes, they were so well-made and smart

I’ve a few Seasalt dresses but generally can’t find anything I like. I wish I could as I like their quality and I love pockets. The ones I have are similar to the one in the picture but I’m not sure they are identical. They are made of lovely lawn cotton. They have an old fashioned vibe but they fit me perfectly and I think they look great. I’m a size 12 usually but a size 10 in Seasalt.

Seasalt clothes are excellent quality but it has a very particular style which only appeals to a certain set of women in my opinion. ie, the middle-aged, slightly bohemian, well off types.

Which could be why I was about to comment that I love Seasalt, as do most of my friends. Grin

I've got a lot of Seasalt stiff, including the Janelle coat LakieLady, although I shop in asda Grin.

I'm hour glass shaped and I never wore dresses until I discovered seasalt. I now have quite a collection, mainly picked up in charity shops and clothes swap parties and probably terribly out of date fashion-wise, but for they're flattering and more importantly, comfy.

Xiaoxiong I love that first dress you linked to, looks like I'll be paying full price for my next dress!

Seasalt is amazing quality so tends to last. Cos, toast, seasalt etc all hold their value reasonably well secondhand.

@YinMnBlue

OP: SeaSalt are not fast fashion, they use ethical cotton, all their stuff is manufactured in the UK, they use re-cycle-able paper sacks to send their stuff out in, no plastic, and their products are hard wearing and wash well.

I love their socks, (3 for 2 and they donate to charity).

But skewiff on sizes, sometimes.

A lot of their stuff is not manufactured in the UK. They did used make a very big deal on their website about UK manufacturing, which could have led people to believe they solely made here.

I did contact them at one time when I received a dress, expecting it to be UK made due to the fanfare online, but the label said otherwise. Returned the dress and let them know I thought their marketing was misleading. Got some boilerplate response about they were proud to design all their garments in the UK and to have some manufacture here, but that cost effectiveness etc meant not everything could be.

Lately I’ve noticed they don’t highlight it to the same extent online.

They are part of Ethical Trading Inititaives etc for overseas factories etc, so I doubt it’s Rama Plaza style operations, but it’ not all sewn by rosy cheeked Cornish ladies.

@CrystalMaisie I'm short and fat with big boobs, I really like the Fatface Simone dress. They do 2or 3 every season. I have 5 now and wear them loads. They wash really well and last well, my oldest is 3 summers old and gets worn once a week all year round.

Seasalt things, while not wildly expensive, are not cheap either, and they’re very good quality, wash and wear well.

I love Duns too, although wouldn't wear one of the radish dresses. I'm planning to wear this one today, so if you see a wee fat wifey in the Edinburgh area wearing it, that'll be me!

I was thinking the other day how much I like Seasalt, especially their summer dresses. Having given myself a terrible quarantine haircut I’m also loving my handyband and was after another, but they sell for so much on eBay!!

After doing the striped ones in different colours for years and years, Seasalt replaced them with floral ones instead, so people will pay more on ebay for the striped ones in case Seasalt never make them again.

I'm sitting here reading this while wearing a short sleeve mill pool dress. It is enormously comfortable and suits my body shape. Like a lot of Seasalt stuff, you can dress up or down. I have long sleeve versions that I wear for work with thick tights and boots - the "sludgy" prints are actually great for the office.

I would agree though that on sizing, you need to drop down a size for Mill Pool.

I’m a TA and have I think about 10 Seasalt dresses or tunics. I love them. In fact there are two I have two of. All have pockets, all fairly casual but smart enough for work and just enough plain colours - I hate patterns.

I’m seeing a lot of long dresses around with high necks and long sleeves. It all looks a bit... well ‘conservative religious meets little house on the prairie’.

I have quite a bit of Seasalt. Good quality and yes, very comfortable. I have a couple of tunic type dresses that work most of the year round, the long sleeve T shirts are great and a wardrobe staple and I have some cords that my grown up daughters insist are very trendy. I have a fantastic rain coat too.

I am a middle aged woman who dresses to please myself.

@ TrickyD That looks like a toddler dress !Shock

I know, Fluffybutter, they do the same style for toddlers right up to adults.
Many members of the Babipur cult deck themselves and their children out in the identical styles and fabrics.
And if you spot someone else wearing one you have to say “Wankel” to them and they have to reply “Radishes are a mainstream vegetable”.

Like their winter tunic jumpers had a gorgeous grey with orange stripe one with pockets which OH put in the tumble dryer it was ruined I was so upset. They put pockets in lots of things which is something else I like. Am wearing a teeshirt today, cream coloured. They do last so long without fading, losing shape.
