Nextdoor have bought a fucking beagle

That barks a lot. Still a puppy so should I be worried it's going to get worse, or could it actually get better?

I know beagles are known for being noisy which makes me question their breed choice considering we live in Edwardian maisonettes in SW London, ie, close together!

The irony is, they used to complain bitterly about their upstairs neighbour before the left.

What about when they both go back to work!!

Aibu to get this to stop ASAP?

Beagles are quite territorial and definitely prone to howling and barking at everything.
We had a beagle when I was a teen/young adult and it was so weird for me when I moved out and I heard my door bell without the accompanying howl, or the post coming through the letter box not followed by barking and growling! I was so used to it was actually unsettling to not hear it. Believe me my parents tried everything to make him stop, it’s just such a big part of their nature. I want to say they are lovely dogs but ours was a grumpy, stubborn old man in a dogs body Grin I can’t guarantee you that this will get better OP, sorry.

Drivingdownthe101 · 28/05/2020 16:58

Mine doesn’t even get off the sofa when the doorbell rings. Not sure he knows he’s a beagle!

MissEliza · 28/05/2020 16:58

Op please don't blame the dog - you're thread title is horrible. I have a beagle and I would say it barks less than the average dog. Then again, we're the right kind of household for her. The breeder actually asked about our lifestyle because they cannot be left alone all day. Your neighbours should organise some doggy day care or a dog walker for when they go back to work.

MissEliza · 28/05/2020 17:00

@Drivingdownthe101 they're lazy little things aren't they? I doubt mine would bark if a burglar broke in!

wowsaid · 28/05/2020 17:07

OP, have only read the first few pages OP, but do they now have new upstairs neighbours? surely they won't be happy about it either, and neither will the other neighbours.
**
Are they out at work all day? If so, can you ask them if they intend to put puppy into doggy day care? You are within your rights to ask them what their plans are and then you can decide if you're going to escalate to the landlord/managing agent.

They have new upstairs neighbours who also have a small puppy, a lap dog type, never heard that one. Perhaps the beagle will set the other one off!

I'll ask them about their dog care plans for when they return to work.. because I'm slightly concerned about it. Would rather know now

Oh god wow if their upstairs neighbours have a dog, they won't be an ally.

Suss them out, and get an idea of their plans first, then set some ground rules. No barking after 7 or before 7 (or something like that) and get them to agree to it. Of course there will be lapses, but they need to know that they won't be able to let the dog out on it's own after a certain time.

You could also try to meet the dog and try to embrace it a bit (not literally)? Your DD might really enjoy the interaction and you could take it out when it's older (on a lead of course). It's worth trying to keep neighbour on side if possible. We fell out with our upstairs neighbour for a short time and it really used to get to me, it was like the bad feeling polluted my home.

grumpyorange · 28/05/2020 18:37

@SecondaryBurnzzz No barking after 7 or before 7 (or something like that)

Urm do you have a dog?

wowsaid · 28/05/2020 18:46

Grumpy, have you got a better idea? Rather than pull apart someone's helpful message?

Assume they meant don't leave the dog to bark alone before or after those hours

OP posts:
grumpyorange · 28/05/2020 18:49

@wowsaid I've asked you questions but you did not reply to them!!

  1. You said the dog had started howling. Had they just gone out?
  2. How old is the dog?
SecondaryBurnzzz · 28/05/2020 18:51

grumpy when my dog was alive I would always go out with her in the garden. She did bark a bit, but I was there to stop/distract her. If she was out on her own she'd really go to town. I'm not suggesting a contract, just a rough guideline for them to consider.

LakieLady · 28/05/2020 19:00

@vanillandhoney: beautiful dog, beautiful beach and beautiful picture!

If that was on the cover of a calendar, it would make me want to buy it. Grin

I'd always understood that beagles need loads of exercise and am amazed that so many MNers have lazy ones. Both my lakeland terriers needed a minimum of 3 miles a day, and in their prime would do a 16 mile walk, mostly offlead, over the downs happily, as long as they could have a good snooze at lunchtime. They probably did a good bit more than the 16 miles we did, as they'd run ahead, come back, run ahead again, rinse and repeat.

I may have missed how long they've had this pup, but it takes at least two or 3 months to get a new puppy settled in, quite a bit longer in a lot of cases. Things may well settle soon, OP.

And it could be worse. It could be a basset.

Anyone who's been to Crufts on hound and terrier day will know that the basset is the noisiest breed on the planet, and they HOWL! The racket when you get near the benches where the bassets are is deafening and makes your ears hurt. Bloodhounds, foxhounds and otter hounds can be very loud when "giving voice", but despite them being much bigger they're not in the same arena as bassets for noise.

vanillandhoney · 28/05/2020 19:05

@LakieLady aww, thank you! He is rather photogenic Grin

His normal walks are about 2.5 miles a day, which takes us about an hour or so - that's on lead and I suppose he has those walks five days a week. Twice a week we do take him somewhere so he can run - that photo was taken yesterday and was part of a two hour walk along the beach. He ran a bit after his ball, had a bit of a swim but mostly trotted along next to us having the occasional sniff of the odd rock...

This morning we went out for an hour and he's spent the rest of the day sleeping under his blanket, pottering in the garden, sunbathing, eating sleeping some more! Most mornings he'll go to the toilet and then straight back to bed, haha.

Drivingdownthe101 · 28/05/2020 19:10

All the beagles I know in real life are lazy! One decent walk then they conk out for the day. My dads beagle refuses walk some days!

MissEliza · 28/05/2020 19:14

Yes same with mine. She's not even that bothered when you bring out the harness to go for a walk whereas my dp's labs go mad.

Couchbettato · 28/05/2020 19:20

@EdwinaMay even my giant freight-pulling sled dogs don't need 50 miles a day. Your vet was talking out of their arse.

wowsaid · 28/05/2020 19:50

I've asked you questions but you did not reply to them!!

I don't know if they'd gone out.. I can't see!

The dog has only just been allowed out for walks, so I'm guessing very young. I think they got it end of April.

OP posts:
Pinkblueberry · 28/05/2020 20:34

Your vet was talking out of their arse.

The 50 mile walk idea has made my day. Perhaps the vet was trying to put people off getting beagles... presumably the posters DCs didn’t end up getting one. I love my dog and have never considered the idea of rehoming him... but if it turned out I had to walk the equivalent distance of Milton Keynes and Central London every day to keep him happy I may well have been tempted. Perhaps I could just hop on the train while my dog runs alongside?

Drivingdownthe101 · 28/05/2020 20:48

Surely if that was the case literally no one would be able to own a beagle? Who is going to walk practically 2 marathons a day?

vanillandhoney · 28/05/2020 21:16

No vet would ever have said something like that seriously.

Or does that poster really believe that everyone who owns beagles walks the equivalent of two marathons a day? Grin

grumpyorange · 28/05/2020 21:25

@wowsaid they could be in the process of training it to be left alone. If they've only just got it pup is also trying to get used to all the newness! Give it a chance and don't complain yet. If you complain it just gives people a complex over something - at the moment - they can do little about. It's not like they can get a trainer in at the moment either

Kittenlicker · 28/05/2020 21:35

Maybe everyone can stop jumping on the 50miles a day thing. Think we’ve got the point and it’s not helping the thread.

RogersVideo · 28/05/2020 21:36

Unfortunately I don't have good news OP. We had a neighbour move in with a beagle and it was awful. Now, I have a dog myself, and our garden backs onto about 6 other gardens of which 3 have dogs, so I don't mind a bit of barking. But the Beagle was on another level. Anytime we went out into the garden, it barked. Particularly at our dog. Going outside became irritating.

The owners were mostly at home far as I could tell. They had some sort of beeping device to deter the barking (not sure how ethical this is) and said the barking had been much worse before they bought the device. The device itself was annoying, as you had barking and BEEEEEP. They moved after a year, thankfully.

MrsSkeffington · 28/05/2020 21:44

Mother in laws got a beagle - it's an utter nightmare

sestras · 28/05/2020 21:44

My neighbours dog barked all day, every day. Only time it was quiet was when it was stalking my dogs through the fence before it tried to chew it's way througu to get at them.

It was horrific. We moved eventually.

My dogs do bark, all dogs do but they stop when told.

I hope they're training it op. It wouldn't be the barking, it's the howling Beagles do that would drive me nuts.

wowsaid · 28/05/2020 21:52

Yes so much howling!
